If you trust analysts, the iPhone 5S will come in multiple colors and two display sizes

iPhone 5S colors (teaser 001)

We’re just two days into 2013, but there’s no hiding from the next wave of Apple rumors. Yesterday brought as a non-news of an unknown developer spotting traces of iOS 7 and the next iPhone in logs – as if Apple hasn’t been working on the iPhone 5S/6 and iOS 7 since before iOS 6 was released.

Wednesday morning, an analyst boldly predicted that the iPhone 5S, a specs bump, will launch by June with multiple color options and – wait ’till you hear this – two different display sizes. I should have been an analyst!

BGR relays a report by Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White who thinks “tax-related selling” is to blame for the recent downward bias in the stock price. He expects a negative news cycle around Apple to be broken as we enter 2013.

Then this:

We believe there is still plenty to look forward to at Apple, including the potential for greater choices (i.e., colors, sizes) around the next iPhone in 2013, combined with accelerating momentum with the iPad mini and continued strength with the iPad franchise at large.

His checks indicate that the next iPhone will be all about more choices:

This entails an expansion in both the color patterns and screen sizes with the next iPhone (i.e., likely called the iPhone 5S) that we currently believe will be launched in May/June with certain supply production starting in March/April.

The June launch guesstimate corroborates his peer Peter Misek’s expectation of the next iPhone around June. Misek thinks the phone will sport NFC, a 4.8-inch Retina + IGZO screen, a new A7 quad-core processor variant and “a new form factor with no home button” with full gesture control “possibly included” as well.

As for Brian White, there’s more where he came from:

Our checks are also indicating that the next iPhone will offer customers more choice in terms of screen size Although Apple offers a 4-inch screen on the iPhone 5 and a 3.5-inch screen on the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4, the Company has never offered multiple screen sizes for a single model.

We believe this is about to change with the next iPhone offering different screen sizes that we believe will allow Apple to better bifurcate the market and expand its reach.

They believe…

Based on what?

Anyway, it’s open season on Apple rumors so I guess anything goes, but this is too much to handle, if you ask me.

I am not ruling out the possibility of color choices.

The iPod music player, for example, originally launched only in snow white and now we have iPods in a bunch of colors. People like to personalize their devices with colors and colors add a sense of consumer choice.

Two screen sizes?

I don’t buy this.

But then again, it’s 2013 and this is Tim Cook’s Apple so we could be in for a few surprise changes in Apple’s market strategy. For example, in 2012 Apple abandoned its annual refresh cycle with the iPad 4, which launched just six months following the iPad 3’s debut in March 2012. It also launched the iPhone 5 in September, breaking away from its usual mid-year refresh cycle.

At any rate, Samsung has put some pressure on Apple by carpet-bombing the market with multiple form-factor smartphones. With the iPhone 5, Apple for the first time relented and gave it a taller four-inch screen.

However, some (or many?) people arguably want an even larger iPhone.

Providing the next iPhone in two flavors – one with the four-inch display (the new gold standard for iPhones) and the other with a jumbo-sized display – could appeal to both camps, and that could be a good thing.

This would, however, inevitably fragment the platform a bit more because the larger iPhone would introduce a new screen resolution. If that’s in fact in the cards, it’s fairly safe to assume that the jumbo-sized iPhone will have a full HD screen at 1,920-by-1,080 pixels and 16:9 ratio.

What’s your read of this rumor?

Iphone 5s gonna be 4.3 inch display I guess

    • http://www.facebook.com/Tommyg80 Tommy Gumbs

That would be better than a 4inch screen.

      • RarestName

So much for the “common sense” screen size, huh?

      • http://www.facebook.com/Tommyg80 Tommy Gumbs

Yea, the whole “thumb” reaching the corner is BS.

    • http://www.facebook.com/joe.jonsen Joe Jonsen

it will be same as 5… the S iphones are only faster never redesigned at all

      • http://www.facebook.com/joe.jonsen Joe Jonsen

do we really need more speed to do the same boring UI stuff?

    • http://twitter.com/Dion0025 Clarence Williams

i pray they do it i got sprint evo 4.3 typing is so more easy but i got i phone 5 great phone overall but typing terrible lol

  • http://www.facebook.com/Tommyg80 Tommy Gumbs

I won’t be purchasing another iPhone until there is a significant size increase. I’m currently on a 4S and refuse to get an iP5. What a sorry excuse for a screen increase. Don’t get me wrong, the phone is sexy. It’s lighter, thinner, etc. however, the screen size isn’t right. It’s off. JMHO though.

    • mb916

This is exactly how I feel. The screen needed to be wider too, not just taller.

      • http://www.facebook.com/joe.jonsen Joe Jonsen

next one wil be wider but not taller..hahahha

      • http://www.facebook.com/joe.jonsen Joe Jonsen

iphone 5 is my last iphone and if there is no jailbreak i will sell it..

    • http://www.facebook.com/joe.jonsen Joe Jonsen

the iPhone 5S will be same but the iPhone 6 will be… wait for it… wait for it…. WIDER…!!!!

    • http://twitter.com/Dion0025 Clarence Williams

i got i phone 64g i love the phone but i have big finger typing is a problem need to be 4.3 or above

  • Matt

Even bigger screen? Please no. 3.5″ is perfect for me and I guess i’ll stay with my 4 for now and upgrade to 4S later on. As for colors, I think that would be neat. Although the accessories that come with it should at least come in both white and black not just white. ColorWare has some gadgets you can already customize with colors, the catch being you have to buy brand new from them.

    • http://www.GoldenGateDomains.com/ Golden Gate Domains

I FEEL IT IS POSSIBLE TO HAVE 2 SCREEN SIZES – THEY HAVE THAT NOW!

THE NEW MODELS COULD BE THE 4S’s SIZE (3.5″) AND THE 5’s SIZE (4″).

I AGREE, THE 3.5″ SIZE IS PERFECT FOR ME, BUT A NEW NAVY BLUE COLOR WOULD BE ENTICING.

HOWEVER MORE IMPORTANTLY HOW ABOUT 2 MODELS WITH “THIN” STANDARD BATTERY AND ONE THAT IS “THICKER” WITH A 24 / 36 HOUR BATTERY LIFE!!! I FEEL THAT IS THE BEST “2-FER” OPTION!!!

Rainbow colors means its silly season at Apple. With no jailbreak likely, I’ll be switching to Android — hanging up my iPhone 4 for the OPPO Find 5 as soon as its released. To big to fail? No — the decline will just take longer.

i think they should stick to the black and white designe because that is unique to them

I’d like to point out that the switch to an October release cycle was not “Tim Cook’s Apple”. In 2011, when Steve Jobs was still CEO, Apple didn’t release a new iPhone at WWDC in June as usual, but passed over that opportunity. In August, Steve stepped down, giving the company to Tim Cook, and the iPhone 4S was announced October 4, 2011. But Steve Jobs’s Apple passed over the opportunity to announce it on its normal June WWDC release cycle

Never gonna happen, maybe different color but not bigger screen

Can’t we just make it look like the iMac, MBA, MBP, and MPro and call it a day?

  • http://twitter.com/lgasparjnr laszlo gaspar

I will bet on anything that we will not see multiple colors until the iphone 6.

colors yes…sizes hell no.. and im betting IOS 7 will be more of the some boring crap..

iOS 7 keynote in a nutshell:
“Here’s another new and revolutionary app that only a small handful of you will use, so it’ll just be space consuming for everyone else”

      • http://www.facebook.com/joe.jonsen Joe Jonsen

yup i swear if that same boring app grid is there i will rip my eyes out and eat them

  • wadjj

4.8 display and back button on thetop left corner? This could easily be the gold standard of use it with two hands or forget it, ios is the least suited OS for large screen. Unless they change the OS AND programming framework significantly TOGETHER, auto layout is a joke at the moment.

    • http://www.facebook.com/joe.jonsen Joe Jonsen

” back button on thetop left corner” nope

  • http://twitter.com/iPod_touch Jordan Dixon

As a developer I pray that Apple doesn’t release yet another resolution. Whenever I create an app now I need to account for the 4 inch iPhone, the 3.5 inch iPhone, and the iPad. That’s a lot of work to do for a single developer.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000027514739 Will Fancher

Why on earth does everyone think apple is going to change screens yet again? They believe they’ve hit the nail on the head. They’re not going to be instantly doubting themselves into offering other sizes and such. And the iPods are colorful to display a certain level of playfulness. They don’t treat the iPhone as in the same playful way.

    • http://www.facebook.com/joe.jonsen Joe Jonsen

jaust just making the screen half and inch taller was gay n lame and insufficient

It would be great if this was true why not have the option for larger screen apple needs to venture to the unknown once in a while

IOS 7, might just be the last OS from apple i am waiting for. if it really is with new UI as the master JONY IVE is in charge and with Craig Federighi leading as head for IOS i hope it will change the IOS and make it even more user friendly. they have the perfect hardware but lets hope that the software is able to collaborate and integrate properly with the Hardware. :)

    • http://www.facebook.com/joe.jonsen Joe Jonsen

Johnny ive is a master of hardware design not damn UI design

  • JBandP

hell no, apple is to boring to make a rainbow selection of iPhones. The IPhone 5s or 6 will be slightly faster, slightly thinner, and have slightly better battery life. im done with apple they are just making the same thing every year now and with no jailbreak in the foreseeable future. I’ll stay jailbroken at 5.1.1 as long as i have my 4s

  • http://twitter.com/IIIDoMiNiQuEIII DoMiNiQuE KoTRoTSoS

I think iOS 7 will be a big upgrade since it is so long in development. Maybe apple was focusing on iOS 7 when they released iOS 6 and maybe that is the reason why iOS 6 is that crappy. Different iPhone colors would be great , two screen sizes will never be real. Would each app come in 3 versions ? An iPad version , a standard iPhone version and a jumbo iPhone version ? I don’t think so …

  • http://www.facebook.com/darian.hach Darian Hach

I think Apple will never introduce diffrent screen sizes for one model because of not being Apple’s way to remark a product. I think the only way for Apple to stay number 1 in the market is to build an iOS with the Saurik of Cydia so that you do not have to jailbreak anymore and get more similar to Google’s Android. Another point could be that Apple should co-operate with Google again because Google is overtaking Apple really quick and it’s more safe than going alone over the market. I’m a huge Apple fan but as I see what Google is doing with Android they look way better than Apple does. iOS is really the most easy to use mobile system and the most bug-less one but not really the world’s most advanced one. So in this case I have to say that Google is the winner and is going to overtake Apple.

“Apple is not Apple what they were with Steve Jobs because Tim Cook is a guy thinking of making big money not of inovating the world with something extraordinary”
