iPad mini (three-up, front, back, profile, white)

This is kind of interesting. According to a new report, Apple is preparing its fifth-generation iPad for an early-2013 launch, despite the fact that it just released the fourth iteration of the tablet back in October.

Citing insider sources, the report claims that Apple will be unveiling the next-gen iPad in March. And the slate will be both lighter and thinner than its predecessor, and feature a new, iPad mini-like design…

Macotakara (without much help from Google Translate) reports:

“Chinese CBSi ZOL is, the report of AppleInsider, but not touching only iPad mini next, according to informed sources, and seems to have a plan announced in March 2013 (5th generation) iPad otherwise tells. In order to counter the Nexus 7 and Surface, it seems there is a possibility that the product release cycle faster. I’m told the design was great as it iPad mini, its design, lighter and thinner. (Perhaps, I considered smaller 2mm 4mm height, 17mm width, thickness).”

Macotakara has a pretty accurate track record when it comes to Apple intel, and other than the fourth-gen iPad, Apple’s new tablets have typically launched in the Spring. So a March unveiling doesn’t sound too crazy.

In addition to the fifth-gen iPad chatter, Macotakara also says that Apple is already working on the second-gen iPad mini. It’s also expected to land in March with a 2048 × 1536 Retina display and an A6X processor.

Tonight’s report matches up with two scoops seen earlier this month. CNET reported that Apple was moving up next-gen mini production to early 2013. And DigiTimes claimed that Apple was upping its display resolution.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, 2013 is going to be a really interesting year for the Cupertino company. After it refreshed nearly all of its product lines this fall, all bets are off on what it’s going to do next, or when.

  • Not surprise there they gonna change their product so frequently.

  • its now an apple thing… to release a really simple version of their product, and then upgrade many good features in future generations and include a new software

    • Johnathan Jennings

That’s been their business plan from the start of the iPod in 2001 dude.. You’re just now figuring that out?

    • Kurt

if you want a really simple version of ios, you will be sorry you asked for that. a striped down version of ios? ufff no no no

  • Tyvann-Xsn

I’m not gonna buy ipad mini right now because I know this will happen 😀

  • too soon..

  • After using an all the generations of ipads since the first gen I finally decided they are just not worth the price. I will not buy an iPad again until the software gets closer to the functionality of OS X.

    • Kurt

you will never buy another ipad if you are waiting for ios to get features

  • SimonReidy

It seems that while Apple’s hardware is growing at an exponential rate, iOS is evolving at a snail’s pace by comparison. I’m worried that with such frequent hardware releases and more frequent small 6.x updates, that the future isn’t looking too rosy for jailbreaking. Once we eventually (hopefully) get an iOS 6.x jailbreak, iOS7 will surely have to be just around the corner and jailbreakers will be getting further behind each generation.

I love my Apple hardware, but I’m finding myself infuriated with stock iOS on my iPhone 5 compared to my jailbroken iPad 3 on 5.1. On the other hand I want iOS6’s features on my iPad 3 so its annoying disparity.

If only Apple would lighten their software restrictions and allow unsigned apps or a a controlled supply of system tweaks from the App Store, I wouldn’t be in a position where I’m considering switching to Android 🙁

    • willie_walk

You have said a mouth full and my thoughts exactly! Nothing else need to be said.

      • Johnathan Jennings

Well except the fact that I was the same way and I already switched to android. Loving my nexus 7

      • Kurt

i wish i never bought the iphone…i like my ipad, but iphone and its little iddy-biddy screen, meh

    • Get a nexus device and be free from apple’s walled garden. Why buy the same shit phone every year knowing nothing new comes it?

      • Kurt

hmm, good point. apple does release the same every year. especially ios which is just an app launcher. its all about the 3rd party apps with apple.

  • all i can say is BOOOO!!

  • Man! I just bought an iPad 4! This sucks! And I new not to buy a non retina iPad mini with a 2yr old processor. I bet the ppl at Apple r laughing at the ppl that bought those.

    • ExRoot

The people at apple ate always laughing. Especially the workers looking through the glass from inside the store on launch day! Rediculous!

    • yup buying ipad min 1 is a terrible idea

  • kgelner

It’s not soon, the recent update was just a refresh. There was no reason to upgrade. The iPad 5 will of course be more of a redesign, but I don’t know why that would be a surprise since they do so every year!

    • Kurt

a redesign? this is apple. they just release the same every year. it feels like 2007 every year (front of the device anyway)

      • when iPhone 5 was shown on stage with that same boring IOS icon grid design i was like OMG…lol heeeelllll no !!!!

  • Maybe Apple should take more time to create new products so there will be less problems, more functionality and new stuff.

    • Johnathan Jennings

      Couldn’t disagree more.

  • Matthew

I don’t really care but I’d rather have Apple not make the iPad 5th generation in March. But that is half because I just got an iPad forth generation for the Holidays.

  • Way way too soon, guess apple doesn’t want to shock people with innovation anymore. Now it’s about flooding the market. Not everyone can buy a new tablet every 6 months. Plus their OS needs a serious overhaul.

    • Kurt

      +1 for your last sentence

    • IOS is sooooo damn boring its sad .. i cant use it without a jailbreak..

  • Johnathan Jennings

I can’t believe the iPad 1 was made just over 2 years ago and we are already on the iPad 4.. Crazy.

    • ipad 1 was pure crap..

      • Johnathan Jennings

How did “pure crap” start all of the tablet madness we have today? Right now, yeah it’s outdated. Back in early 2010 it was the thing to have, though.

  • Glad I am finally getting an iPad for Christmas and it will be outdated by March… It is annoying but it isn’t like the CPU world has been like this for years. This is the reason I only buy iPhones with an “S”. Basically I tell people to wait for the flaws and issues to get worked out, then buy the S model. Also, if all rumors were true, no one would ever buy the current iDevice and wait for the next.

  • For everyone who’s not satisfied with iOS staying the same, just go Android!
I am glad I don’t have to get used to new looks and shit with every new release of iOS. Just look at youtube – every design change made it just worse and worse and more complicated an confusing to use.
I am staying with iOS exactly because it doesn’t change.

  • Already have an ipad 2 and a microsoft surface. Now I want to get another tablet! The ipad 5 sounds tempting. But want to get a new phone next year. Have the 4s but tired of iphone and want to try android. Though the iphone 5 feels and looks great the software is outdated.
