Looking to snag an iPhone 5 on the cheap? Well if you’re an AT&T subscriber, or don’t mind becoming one, you’re in luck. The carrier has just started offering refurbished models of Apple’s latest handset, and the 16GB version costs just $99…

As noted by 9to5Mac, refurbished iPhone 5s have surfaced on AT&T’s website. It looks like they have 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB models, and they’re priced at $99, $199 and $299 respectively. They also appear to have both white and black versions.

Of course, as with all great things, there are some caveats. For starters, you have to be ok with signing a two-year agreement to receive the above pricing. And given how prone to scratching the iPhone 5 is, a refurbished handset may disappoint.

AT&T does provide a 14-day return policy though, and a 90-day warranty, so that should give you some piece of mind. If you’re interested, you can find the discounted iPhones on the carrier’s website. There’s no word on how long they’ll be available.

What do you think about a $99 refurbished iPhone 5? Deal, or no deal?

  • MacServiceGuy

wow… AT&T has the 5s before apple has even released it… nice!

    • I see you’re good at grammar… iPhone 5s HAVE (not has) surfaced… It’s the plural form.

      • No, ‘has’ refers to the singular ‘apple’.

      • ‘5s’ means 5 plural.

        You’re stupid

        hey troll, learn english

    • um the next iPhone will be the iPhone 5S not the iPhone 5s.. see the difference?

  • Wils

    Wow 5s šŸ™‚

  • @dongiuj

    Refurbished iphone 5. Already?!

    • josephz2va

My thoughts exactly. They must have some upset AT&T customers returning the iPhone for poor network service

    • yup cause 10000000000 folks returned their scratched up black iphone 5s for white ones that dont scratch..lol

  • 5s hopefully a typo.

    • josephz2va

Probably is a typo. They shouldn’t trick us like that. It’s not Halloween.

      • P

It’s not a typo, dumdum. It’s the plural form of iPhone 5. If there’s anything to be corrected, it should be the “piece of mind”.

  • Telus in Canada is offering $100 off all iPhone 5 models on contract for new customers 16gb $79,32gb$179,64gb$279 non refurbished

    • Breathless

Canada also has 3 years contracts along with expensive data/voice plans so its not any great deal.

Watch out for the grammar nazi’sā€¦

More like, a scuffed iPhone 5 on sale, I don’t think the back panel would survive refurbishing unscuffed, unless replaced that is!

  • do those phones work in Belgium network?

  • TheAngryPenguin

I’ll bite. Gonna miss my current iP4’s JB, but since it’s 2.5 years old now, it should be a worthy upgrade. Don’t forget about AT&T’s $36 upgrade fee! I should still be able to sell my unlocked 4 for at least $200, so either way, it’s a win-win. I’ll report back here as soon as I get it and let everyone know how it turns out. I highly doubt that they’d send out a device that has any noticeable blemishes.

    • TheAngryPenguin

Checking the order status, I noticed this:

      Phone/Device: discontinued iPhone 5 (16GB Black) (Refurb)

WTF?!? Discontinued?!? Maybe that new rev that’s been rumored is really right around the corner.

      • blu

my order says the same thing.

      • Ian Zuidema

yeah im kind of annoyed mines taken a week and its not done processing.

      • blu

Just got an e-mail from ATT, mine will be shipped in 14-21 business days!
They are saying it should be delivered by December 24th. If not for the fact that it was $136 (100 + $36 upgrade fee) I would cancel it.

      • Krishna Kolakaluri

Did u receive your phone or is it still showing as processing.

      • TheAngryPenguin

Just received it a bit ago. Perfect condition, although it was obvious that someone from AT&T had opened the packaging, perhaps to insert the SIM. So far so good!

      • Krishna Kolakaluri

cool!! I ordered on 11/23 and it still shows as processing.Hope i get it soon.

After living with it for a few days, I noticed the dreaded rattling noise emitting from the camera/flash area ( http://bit.ly/Qufoly ). Even a light tap results in what sounds like a loose screw frolicking inside the case. At first I thought it was the vibrator motor (giggity!), but apparently this is a known issue with 4S and above models, and its likely caused by the camera’s auto-focus mechanism. Being a musician, I have highly sensitive ears (not to mention a certain sense of anal (giggity-giggity!) – retentiveness towards perfection), so I called AppleCare and the analyst (giggity-giggity-gig-a-dee!) said that it wasn’t normal. Also of note, he said that my phone had 300+ days of warranty left! At any rate, I will be visiting the GeniusBar to see what they have to say about it. Perhaps they’ll replace it with a new/non-refurbished device. For what it’s worth, the rattling can be heard not only by shaking the phone vigorously, but also by lightly tapping it about 1/2 way between the top and bottom of the back of the phone. Hope everyone who’s still waiting for their new iP5 receives them soon!

  • blu

Well, I was waiting for this, figured it would be another 4 months or so and be $150, so for $99 I am in.
Refurbs come with new cases and batteries, so no risk there. I have always gotten refurbs and never had an issue.

  • Thorasgard

Only a 90 day warranty? That sucks

  • Jesse

I got a black refurbished iphone 5 for $99. For some reason they let me upgrade online 1 1/2 years early. The phone I got was perfect, no scratches anywhere. It came in a refurbished box, but everything was brand new. I sold my iphone 4 that I bought 6 months ago for $300 right after. So I basically got a brand new iphone 5 and $200. Awesome deal !!!

    I love iPhone 5
