Apple picks new battery supplier, drops Samsung

By , Nov 23, 2012

Apple has chosen two China-based battery companies to supply the iPad and MacBook, says a Friday report. Amperex Technology Limited and Tianjin Lishen Battery would replace Samsung SDI, a subsidiary of the South Korean firm that is both Apple’s chief rival and largest supplier. The report is just the latest indicating Samsung and Apple are reconsidering their close relationship.

As the two smartphone giants attempt to out-compete each other in the courtroom and store shelves, Samsung’s role appears to be shifting from major supplier to important manufacturer…

Darrel Etherington, reporting for TechCrunch:

This battery supplier report is just the latest in a series of indicators that the relationship between the two could be undergoing a slow but inevitable shift, but don’t expect to see Apple and Samsung walk away from each other entirely for quite a while yet.

Despite denials from both Apple and Samsung, there has been a steady stream of leaks suggesting a shift between the two companies.

Samsung reportedly had hiked prices for processors it was supplying to Apple, though an unnamed official reportedly denied the assertion. This was followed by another report saying the South Korean company planned to take a “more aggressive stance” in Apple negotiations.

At another point, it was reported that Apple was moving its display business to a different supplier. More evidence is mounting that Apple is seeking ways to untangle itself from Samsung.

Word on the street has it that Apple will move production of its in-house designed chips away from Samsung to rival Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. Still, few believe Apple’s chief executive Tim Cook will rush to slash ties with Samsung.

An aerial view of Samsung’s fabrication facility in Austin, Texas where Apple-designed processors for iPhones and iPads are being made exclusively.

The interconnections are too great and Samsung’s huge production capabilities will take time to farm out. However, Cook is well versed in Apple’s supplier universe, coming from the operations side of the consumer electronics firm.

If Apple can save time and money without dealing with Samsung, it will happen.

Otherwise, be prepared to deal with another chapter of the Silicon Valley Odd Couple.

At any rate, Samsung is taking a less-prominent role in producing Apple gadgets.

Feel free to chime in with your thoughts down in the comments.

If this is for better & long lasting battery,.. Well, it’s welcome! Hope not some arrogant/childish war between the 2 company. Pls you guyz should just STOP and behave like a multi-billion coy & not some sh*t( Enough!

um no… they will choose a cheaper option to increase4 their profits

I think Apple should move away as much of its operations as it can from Samsung. No need to fund a competitor, move its operations to non-competitor. Apple already helps its component partners so it will help its new suppliers to bring them up to the mark. It should only retain at Samsung what it cannot easily move. Its in its best interest to do so. Similarly with Maps why fund Google, even at the expense of a poor experience for a short while it was a good decision. Apple should change the default search engine on Safari from google to Bing or something else as well.

        Your kidding right.

they cant use samsung for anything now its too risky..

Do you know what a contract is?

  • Tr1pTr0p

I don’t care who the supplier is, as long as my battery gets me through the day, which hasn’t been the case with my 4S. I have to charge that damn thing twice a day, and yes, with auto brightness on and WiFi off. It’s freaking embarrassing!

    • Blake

      And andoird is better? PSH

    • Blake

Plus I used my 4s all day and it was usually around 15% when I went to bed. My 5 lasts me all day and i go to bed with about 20%. Currently: 3 hours 43 min usage, and 4 hourz 11 minutes standby with 77% percent battery remaining

According to Apple, iPhone 4S can last for 200 hours on standby with 3G, so those 16 hours I got are nothing. What is truly pathetic is the fact my phone was at 1% after only 4 hours of usage! 4 HOURS! Obviously, I don’t use my phone to send a few texts per hour and check Facebook every leap year.
I still don’t think you realize how awful that is. That friend of mine I mentioned in previous comments, who owns an S3… He uses that thing more than I use my iPhone! He fully charged it two days ago, and STILL has 11% left!!!
And what pisses me off, even more than the battery, are comments such as yours: “Like Android is better, psh.” Do you even realize how fucking broad the term Android is? And how in the world can “Android” have better battery life? Sure, software can impact battery life, positively and negatively, but battery life primarly depends on the battery itself.
What I constantly hear on this blog is how bad Android is at multitasking, how it’s a resource hog, and so on. Then why the hell does an S3 with that massive 720p battery hungry amoled display, with Android and it’s “horrible” multitasking, have such better battery life???
I’m pissed because I wasted my money on this overrated “high quality” junk that can’t do half the shit it’s competitors can and I’m stuck with it! Get your facts straight and inform yourself before you decide to post such crap next time. Thanks!

That is obviously a faulty SAMSUNG battery. That is obviously unusual. I have never ever ever even come close to having battery life like that!

      • Tr1pTr0p

God forbid Apple selling junk, it’s always someone eles’s fault!

      • AdamChew

Sell the iPhone 4S and buy the S3 since you are so happy with its battery life. Stop using junk if you are pissed with it and use whatever crap you like.

I am using the 5 and it lasted me through the day with 30% battery life left and yes i check my Facebook and watch whatever out there that is interesting to me.

      • MagicDrumSticks

You must only watch one video a day and not have many Facebook friends.

      • TriguyRN

A big point is do you use LTE?

      • MagicDrumSticks

        The silly fanboys won’t understand.

I have a note 2 and the 3100 mAH battery gets me two days of usage

Foolish Apple sheep and their inferior devices.

      • Gary Kunin

Who needs that oversized piece of crop. I would be embaresed to hold that thing next to my ear.

      • Tr1pTr0p

The Note 2 comes packed with features you fanboys can only dream about having, at least until the iPhone 468.
99.16% of the time I spend using my 4S is NOT on calls. Yes, I did the math. I use my phone for about 6 to 7 hours a day, which is around 200 hours per month. Lately, I’ve been using only about 100 minutes of talk time, also per month. Simple math will tell you I spend 0.84% time on phone calls.
So yes, I would rather look “stupid” (although that is subjective and I disagree) those 0.84% of the time, but I would, to put it mildly, enjoy the other 99.16% browsing on that giant display!
If you use you phone for an average of 4 hours a day, which is 120 hours a month, you would have to spend at least 30 hours on the phone every month, in order for your argument to work. In this example, 30 hours of talk time would be around 25% of the usage time, and would sooner give you cancer than justify your absolutely retarded argument. Have a nice day.

      • MagicDrumSticks

that’s simple the problem. Apple fanboys only care about looks of the device because frankly, thats pretty much the main selling point for the 5. (thinnest, lightest and anodonized aluminum). It’s kind of like the hot girl who has no brains.

I’d rather go for an ok looking girl who can do a whole lot more (note 2)

Oh yah speaking of, are you really trying to impress people by holding a phone up to your ear? Massive fail.

      • TheDutSerio

You obviously don’t understand the difference between the 3100mAh Note2 and the 1440mAh iPhone 5. Your reasons for being on an apple only site elude me however the fact remains that the iPhone has better battery life than any android device that I’ve ever owned. One of which had a 2500mAh battery and was a Samsung device. So please get off this site and leave it to people who enjoy reading its articles. You’re biased and this whole “mines better!!!”, “NO MINE IS.” Is getting stupid and out of hand. You want something to bitch about cut your face off and bitch about how your am idiot. Have a nice day and go fuck yourself.

      • MagicDrumSticks

        Umadbro?.

I guess the iPhone defies the laws of physics now right? Why don’t you show me some proof that the 5 can beat out the razr maxx or the note 2?

With specs as weak as the iPhone 5′s, it’s absolutely, ABSOLUTELY unacceptable that it doesn’t last as long as something with a 5.5 inch super amoled screen and a quad core processor.

      • TriguyRN

The iPhone has a smaller screen and a slower processor meaning it uses less battery.

      • MagicDrumSticks

I never got my proof. So Don’t ever make up bullshit like that again.

      • RarestName

I was lucky enough to get about 5 hours, but that was on cellular browsing.

    • http://www.facebook.com/kelly.hewitt.731 Kelly Hewitt

Ummmm you want to have wifi on it saves battery. And turn 3G off when not using it saves LOADS of battery

  • http://www.facebook.com/khan.rulzz.7 Khan Rulzz

thats really good … cutting shamesung !!!!!!!!

  • kings121

i say yes to better batteries for apple product!!!! but i,m certain it will not be like that

  • http://twitter.com/doubleaa25 Adham

I don’t really mind who the supplier is to tell you the truth. I just want a better battery that lasts during the day. I think the next big thing in the battery world is developing a battery that can make devices such as mobile phones last for a week without charging.

  • Blake

Apple should just buy samsung :)

    • Falk M.

      God please no.
We need some good competition for things to move forward at a geek-friendly pace.

    • AdamChew

I don’t believe you buy a cow to get milk.

    • Anonymous

Hell no, that would be the end of consumer choice, and no way am I looking forward to that.

  • Blake

Clearly the samsung batteries are not the best.

  • iamnotfan

    In my opinion

they could use SANYO battery , though price is high

  • Anonymous

I’m looking forward to better battery life in iDevices, but I can 99% gurantee it’s not gonna be going that way with Tim Cock as CEO. That dick head is taking Crapple down with him as CEO; he cares not about perfection like SJ, but more about money like every other business douche bag out there.

  • HX

We don’t care who is the battery supplier we just want a durable batteries that last much longer and have a greater life span.

    * I’m sick of charging my phone everyday. :(

  • MrAl

I need to replace the battery of my 2yr old iPhone4 myself. Any recommendations where I order a *high quality* (!) battery? I saw batteries on ebay between $2 and $15 … plus replacement kits for a few bucks. Anyone used batteries from ifixit.com or directfix.com? Thanks!
