Lame: Apple didn’t update its shopping app for the taller iPhone 5 display

By , Sep 27, 2012

Just a quick thought here. Apple ahead of the iPhone 5 release updated iLife, iWork and a bunch of other iOS apps it makes. All good. Sadly, notable absent was the official Apple Store app.

A free download, it’s a time savior for buying Apple gear and is indispensable in a ton of scenarios, like current iPhone 5 supply constraints. Combined with the Personal Pickup option, the Apple Store app is the most elegant and convenient purchasing solution.

That being said, it’s a shame the software has seen little love lately. Apple hasn’t even bothered to update the app with support for the taller iPhone 5 display. Just check out those annoying black bars in the below screenshot. Lame, I’m tellin’ ya…

The Apple Store app last received an “iOS compatibility update” on September 5.

How lame is that?

Here’s what it looks like on an iPhone 5 (thanks, Ben Madison!)

Click for larger.

Check out those fugly black bars at the top and bottom.

By the way, that’s how all 640-by-960 pixel apps (those not specifically optimized for the iPhone 5) appear on the iPhone’s taller 1,136-by-640 pixel screen.

Ugly, no?

It goes back to normal after the test. How did you keep it that way?

Noticed this over the weekend when I went to the Apple store in AC, NJ. Like you said very useful app but disappointed Apple didn’t update it!

i think they probably forgot.. i guess everybody should start talking about it so that they can update it to be compatible with their new vertical elongated screen

Haha I noticed this just last night and was shocked Apple didn’t update upon the iPhone 5 release. Funny how you bring this up

There’s a simple reason they haven’t worked on it shortly before the iPhone 5 launch:

Had they messed up the app SOMEHOW and it hadn’t worked for people, they had been pi**ed about not being able to preorder an iPhone 5.
    So why bother?

They rolled the safe way, props to them.

Now that the iPhone 5 has been out for almost a week, I guess it’s time to update it though. :)

      Highly probable. Not likely tho.

I went to my local Apple store Monday and they had not even updated the wall ads to show the iPhone 5 and their video loop behind the Genius Bar was still tauting iOS 5. When I asked the rep why it had not been updated he said he wondered the same thing.

Tim, Are you dropping ad standards or did your team in Troy, MI fail on their own?

I think the guys behind RetinaPad will fix this by the time iOS 6 jailbreak is released, but lets hope by then that all Apps (well almost) are updated to take advantage of the taller screen :)

I don’t think that it’s even updated for iPad, which has been out how many years? And where is that Apple Store card for Passbook that they talked about at WWDC?
