cannot connect to iTunes store

Since updating my iPhone to the latest iOS version available, I’ve been having problems with the App Store. Specifically, when I was in the Passbook application and clicked the App Store portal, I was met with the following error: “Cannot connect to iTunes Store.”

As it turns out, I’m not the only one having this problem. A thread has started in Apple’s support forums regarding the issue, and it has already garnered 5,000 views. Luckily, it appears that some folks have managed to come up with a fix.

The solution is pretty simple, as long as you know about it:

Step 1: Go to Settings > General > Date and Time > Set Automatically > Off.

Step 2: Set the date one year ahead.

Step 3: Go back to the App Store and try to download or update an app.

Step 4: If you’re still getting the “cannot connect to iTunes or App Store” error message, go back to Settings > General > Date and Time > Set Automatically back to On. Now go back and try again. It should fix your issue.

Believe or not, this worked. Now when I tap the App Store link from within the Passbook application, it opens to the Passbook section. This is especially nice, since at the moment, there isn’t a way to visit the Passbook section any other way.

Did this work for you? Let us know in the comments below!

  • on iphone 5 back everything up then do a reset erase all content and settings and on restart it should work again, then just resore everything from backup. However do not turn genius on because this is what caused it to crash for me anyway.

It didn’t work but resetting the network settings was working for me! Try it!

  • At first this did not work for me. I made an appointment and took my 4s in to the Apple Store. They replaced it. !! It worked great for a week, then it started again. I’m holding my breath but this fix is working for now. Thanks.

For everyone else, if you are under warranty (12 months) take it to Apple, if you can. Clearly, they know there is a problem but they are unable to isolate it.

  • Well, it worked for one download. 🙁 This is sooo annoying! I got an iPhone because I was SICK of resetting my “smart phone” to factory settings. This is almost as bad.

  • daria

    didn’t work!! :((((
please help! this is ery annoying! ! !!

  • No any other sugestions

  • Thanks tooooooo much

  • This will work (***TEMPORARILY***). You have do to this exactly. Close out of the App store completely (get it in wiggly mode, and close it down). Change the date and set it 1 year ahead. Open the App store. As soon as you open it, hit the home button, (don’t wait for itunes to open completely, just hit home as soon as you open it), and go to Settings to change the date to Automatic. Then open up the App store, and it will work. ***NOTE: this only worked on 1 app at a time. Each time I wanted to download a new App, I had to do the above steps again***

I could not download or upgarde apps on wifi (iphone 4/ios6); none of the user-based solutions worked for me, but Apple explained that after an IOS update you must logout of the iTunes Store and re-enter your Apple id and manually enter password – this fixed it ie

  • bob

  • Jordan Hammond

If browsing works and you just can’t connect to iTunes store or Weather app then go to settings –> Safari and clear history and cookies. Then try If it says success in top left corner you fixed it.

  • As ridiculous as this sounds –it actually worked for me (but just for one app???). Just switched from a droid to iphone 5 and so far it’s just been a pain to use.

Two things to try. Please reply with what works.

1: Turn on Airplane mode, then turn it off again. This resets internet related settings.

    Does it work?

2: Changing the DNS in Setting, Wi-Fi, DHCP tab, DNS , replace with (Google) or (Google)

    Does it work?

      try that:

Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services -> System & services (all way down) and enable “Setting time zone”

      is that it?

  • Guydu33

Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services -> System & services (all way down) and enable “Setting time zone”

    Hope it helps!

  • Nikola Stan

I first tried the steps and it was still giving me the error, then I went back and turned automatic time to OFF and set my time zone to Salt Lake City instead of Denver (I don’t know why automatic settings go to Denver) and it worked then!

  • Awesome. Worked for me ! Nice.

  • Worked for me !
