BrowseInApp: open links in-app without switching to Safari

By , Aug 5, 2012

When the developer for BrowseInApp contacted us, asking us to do a review of the tweak, I was a bit skeptical. I hadn’t tried it before, and I feel like I’ve tried most of the jailbreak packages out there that are worth trying.

But boy was I wrong. After playing with BrowseInApp for a couple of days, the tweak has quickly become one of my favorites. It’s well-built, convenient, and integrates seamlessly into iOS. Keep reading for my full review…

BrowseInApp is a jailbreak tweak that installs an in-app browser into iOS. This enables you to open up URL links in an application without forcing you to switch to Safari or some other default browser. Why? Because while apps like Twitter and Facebook already have in-app browsers, apps like Messages and Mail don’t.

After installing the tweak, you can enable it by visiting its section in the Settings app. Once that’s done, anytime you see a link within an application that doesn’t already have a built-in browser, tapping on it will bring up a menu.

From here, you can choose to open the link in-app, open it in Safari, or simply copy it. Opening up the link in-app launches a lightweight web browser that loads over your current window. It’s surprisingly well done, with an editable URL bar, back and forward page buttons, and an option to open the website your on in Safari.

BrowseInApp works like a good tweak should. It’s stable, lightweight and seamless. And honestly, you’d be surprised how convenient it is to get a quick glance at a website, instead of having to switch into Safari every time. If you want to check it out, and I recommend you do, you can find it in the BigBoss repo, in Cydia, for $.99.

Have you tried BrowseInApp yet? Thoughts?

This is actually one of them neat tweaks.

speaking about open in app, an idownloadblog app would be awesome!!!

there is an app like on insanely repo

An official app would be nice

  • http://twitter.com/redevil1987 Damian W

The minute it came to cydia and i saw the title, i kinda knew that it is gonna be essential tweak for me. It drove me nuts whenever i clicked on the adds and opened safari and then safari redirected me to appstore. Eventually, iphone would crash because run out of RAM. This issue is no longer present. Big Thank you to the developer.

      LinkSafe.

      • http://twitter.com/redevil1987 Damian W

oh I missed this one. It was released a year ago so I kinda forgot it exist. Thanks for letting me now.

Btw. it does not support iOS 5.

      • Kok Hean

I have the .deb file which I’ve installed the tweak with, since it can’t be purchased on iOS 5. It works completely fine on iOS 5+.

      • Metroview

That’s weird. It installs fine on my 4S 5.1.1 in Cydia. And I wonder why it now shows “Not compatible with iOS 5″ when it wasn’t there before, and I don’t get that yellow “not compatible” box but instead the green “Package Officially Purchased” box.

      • Kok Hean

Hmm, it can be installed from Cydia now :)

      • http://twitter.com/redevil1987 Damian W

only if you have pirate repo

      • Kok Hean

No, it can be installed normally from Cydia’s official repository.

    Downloading now! :)

  • ReanimationXP

Be nice if I could test this before buying.. Saurik. -_-

    • Metroview

The hell you need to test it for when this post shows you exactly what it does? And FYI Saurik has nothing to do with this tweak.

      • ReanimationXP

Whoa watch out we got a smart one over here! Settle down there killer. If you weren’t a dipshit you’d know that Saurik was in charge of the Cydia Store ecosystem, and ultimately would be the only one who could augment it into a try-before-you-buy compatible system.

Guess that little allusion was too much for you, eh?

      • Rafael Damasceno

Intelliborn has try-before-you-buy by giving couple days licenses. Delicious (a.k.a. biteSMS creators) do try-before-you-buy giving 1 week licenses, and after that, by displaying ads. It is definitely the developers choice.

      • ReanimationXP

@Metro / Rafael – Yes, let’s have every single developer who make a quick 1 or 2 day tweak like this spend weeks developing a payment and authentication system for themselves simply to allow trials on a broken store system which should in the first place. While we’re at it let’s have devs make a free “Lite” version of every app in the AppStore! That’d make sure they have 2 things to update for every app, and clutter up the store at the same time! You guys should win nobel prizes for brilliance!

      • Rafael Damasceno

The thing is that some developers would not want it. Or they would want to have different methods of trying the app/tweak. Not providing full functionality, displaying ads, full functionality for a limited time. While we’re at it: there are lots of free “Lite” versions in the App Store, they update two apps, they clutter up the store. There are freemium apps which display ads until you do an $0,99 IAP. There are apps which provide more functionality through IAP too. You can only really try an app there if you actually buy it and ask for a refund later. And see, biteSMS manages it’s own licenses totally bypassing Cydia Store. What could Jay do about it? You should win the Nobel Prize of taking things too seriously.

      • ReanimationXP

Obviously some developers would not want it – that’s why it would be an option, not a requirement. Your comments (complaints?) about the App Store are precisely what I’m talking about! Do you not understand any common sense at all? I swear this community has some of the dumbest people I’ve ever met.. I wonder how you guys breathe on your own.

A trial period, a la LockInfo, is always the best solution for a tweak. A game might require something different like a Demo, but that instance /would/ be on the developer. It’s Saurik (and Apple’s) obligation to provide a Store ecosystem that meets dev’s needs instead of forcing them to take menial tasks like providing a trial into their own hands.

      • Rafael Damasceno

I inhale, then exhale. Pretty though, huh? Let me sum this up to you: it’s a developer’s choice, not need. And also, if it was implemented at the store, you would probably end up increasing and facilitating the piracy of these tweaks. It would be buggy as hell, as you don’t visit Cydia every 15 minutes, and you could keep using the tweak with almost no time restrictions. This is always a task for the developer of each app. It’s not as straight-forward as you are trying to make it look.

      • Metroview

So you’re telling me that Saurik can choose what tweak/theme/utility/etc gets trial support and simply implement it in them and what doesn’t on another developer’s creation? Please make yourself look like an idiot some more.

    • Impeach Obama

check out youtube. It’s a great resource for reviews. if you like it then go and purchase it. if not, find something better (if there is of course)

      • ReanimationXP

You’re kidding.. you mean someone has my exact same setup of 20+ tweaks installed and has already tested this for me on YouTube? I wasn’t aware they offered such services! Spot on advice and I will carry it out ASAP good sir.

      • http://www.facebook.com/kamil.malinski Kamil Malinski

jesus, just spend the amazing amount of 99 cents and try this damn tweak by your own!

I don’t get it, people are willing to spend several hundrets of $ each year for the latest (and often useless, broken, buggy) hardware but when it comes to pay 99 cents for a usefull tweak they discuss forever, complain, want a trial version etc…

      • ReanimationXP

Yes why spend my money on something like.. oh… Camera+ when I could spend it on an untested, potentially broken tweak instead?

      • http://twitter.com/redevil1987 Damian W

this tweak is gives minor functionalty, therefore it should not cause any issues with other tweaks.

      • ReanimationXP

Sounds good bro! I’ll take your word then. When it doesn’t where can I contact you for refund?

      • http://twitter.com/redevil1987 Damian W

I am not a developer of this tweak. I am just saying what I experienced on my two devices. I have over 100 tweaks installed.

      • Impeach Obama

he knows very well you are not the developer. he was being sarcastic.

      • http://twitter.com/redevil1987 Damian W

yeah I guess, did not really get the joke or it was not as funny as planned.

      • Impeach Obama

he was just talking down to you. not to be funny but to belittle you. look at his other comments

      • http://twitter.com/redevil1987 Damian W

ohhhh myyy he did belittle me so much that i felt devastated for my whole life. this is what i get for trying to give a guy a tip.

      • Impeach Obama

haha dont be devastated! your life will improve one day ;)

      • Impeach Obama

oh yeah definitely. youtubers know beforehand who will watch their videos so they can set up their phones accordingly. I checked, a video with your set up has been upload by some youtuber. enjoy!

  • haridsv

Anyone who thinks this is an essential tweak, should check out if Android is better for you. This is just a cheap trick for a missing Share functionality and Back button, which is like a thousand times more convenient

    • Kok Hean

What if they don’t want to use Android?

    • http://twitter.com/redevil1987 Damian W

this cheap trick happens to be essential. And android reminds me of windows 95 so I dont want to look at it.

  • Kok Hean

    I would prefer AppSlide.

  • http://www.facebook.com/oleksandr.lytvyn Sasha Lytvyn

it doesn’t show up in cydia !
    Why ???

    • http://twitter.com/redevil1987 Damian W

it does! Just hit refresh button.

  • Rafael Damasceno

English is not my main language, but I’m open to discuss this in French, Spanish and Portuguese. AFAIK you came here insulting everything and everyone because the stores’ ecosystems aren’t built the way you like. Both .debs and .ipas with no built-in protection are easily crackable. Not everyone can afford or gather conditions to do online purchases (those which are underaged or have no international credit cards). That framework would provide full access to a paid product, which would make it way easier to crack, as you don’t need to actually purchase it. This happens because things are never flawless and not everyone does things legitimately. Not having a proper framework is the lame developer’s excuse not to provide trials. And if your problem is really just whether or not it is compatible with your tweaks’ setup, stop whining at this blog and just contact the developer. It’s just the risk you take buying things. If you don’t like it, easily ask for a refund.

    • ReanimationXP

You know nothing about security, so please stop pretending you do. Trials do not make cracking any easier. As a developer and an IT Security Analyst with years of experience I can tell you this with 100% certainty. You’re a moron.

Unrelated, I pirated this app, saw that it seemed pretty good, and have since bought it. Create me an ecosystem where I don’t have to pirate something just to try it, and I guarantee you, you’ll have less so-called “pirates” like myself.

      • Rafael Damasceno

The problem is not that kind of piracy. I think that people should really do that instead of buying crap and then having regrets. But no matter what kind of system Apple implanted to have trials, I can foresee a jailbreak tweak coming to completely break it. You know how it works, Mr. IT. As soon as hacker has a ipa in hands, the app is fully cracked. You don’t even need to do anything to it as AppSync totally ignores the metadata. It’s as simple as uploading to a file sharing service. And just because I don’t have a degree in effing security analysis it doesn’t mean I don’t understand things.

  • eightdown

holy shit you are a douchebag

    • ReanimationXP

      Insightful post.

Very useful tweak is this, its stop west of time for open link in to browser.
