As part of Atari’s 40th birthday, the publisher just announced an interesting promotion that lets you grab all of its classic game ports for the iPhone and iPad totally free of charge.

The Atari’s Greatest Hits app has always been a free download, but each of a hundred Atari 2600 and arcade games found in this collection is normally a paid download through in-app purchases (except Missile Command).

You don’t want to pass on this one, but there are some caveats you should know about…

Atari tweeted an hour ago:

Atari’s Greatest Hits promo for iOS is extended! 100 classic titles in your pocket for FREE, now until 11:59pm EST 6/28.

Upon launching the app, a dialogue box informs you that all games will remain free to play until you remove or reinstall the game. Normally, you can either buy 25 separate packs in-app for 99 cents or get all hundred titles for ten bucks.

So if you want to take advantage of this promotion, you’re advised to download and install the app on all your iOS devices and then on each device download whatever game you want to play for free and keep.

The app has amassed over five million downloads since its release last April.

Are you a sucker for classic Atari hits?

  • So, according to your post, when I upgrade to a new iOS device – i.e. iPhone 5 this Fall, I will have to pay for the game then if I were to decide to keep it?

Honestly, I have a long love affair with Atari, owning the Atari 800 and learning Atari Basic on that machine – and “saving” on to audio cassette tapes!!!

But, humm, I’m just not too sure I need to relive those games anymore – I’ll take a look, but……………

Just restore from a backup, and you won’t have to pay for them again.

    • No. The purchases are tied to your iTunes account. Whatever device you log in, you will not have to pay for the game.

    • So, according to your comment, when you decided to upgrade to a new iOS device this fall, your upset that you have to pay for games that they gave you a chance to have for free?
Theres a reason why this is only on for 6 hours.

Its a promo, stop acting like they are trying to rip you off -_-

      • He’s not upset, he’s just asking, idiot.

  • But if it’s backed up in the “Cloud”, then technically you won’t ever have to pay for them again? Christian did say, “until you remove or reinstall the game” Not sure what is meant by “reinstall though”..

  • Falk M.

    That’s why I don’t trust In-App-Purchases.
Can’t back them up and depend on the grace of others for the availability what you paid for.

Now this is free, so I guess it’s still kinda a cool deal, but I keep my IAPs on the bare minimum.
Try not to buy them ever.

  • Actually, the message in the App states “They are free to download and play, UNTIL the app is removed or reinstalled” Meaning you will have to pay for them if you don thave that device. You all should learn to pay more attention, instead of looking for faults in the recent comments..

I paid the $10 many months ago…then I restored my iPhone when I upgraded to 5.1.1 … I did a complete restore, not a restore from backup. To this day, I have not been able to download all 100 games…it keeps trying to charge me.

    • Dan

      Could always try iapcracker

      • I see your thinking however that only works for ones where no download is required.

      • Denshal

iv been able to download dlc, its just that where a sever checks to see if you acually payed it before giving you access

    • Kok Hean

Try some iAP downloader since you’ve already paid for this.

    • when you but an iap and reinstall the app. you need to click buy again. it will say it will charge you, but it wont.

  • I downloaded these games then remembered why I stopped playing them because they are boring as watching paint dry!

    • JaeM1llz

Hahah, I feel the same way. I played for about 5 minutes and that’s all the time the nostalgia lasted. Can’t believe how long I used to spend playing these games….

  • MadAndronicus

Ok ok. I’ll buy an iCade.

  • deepdvd

All we have to do is use DataDeposit (from Cydia) to back up the app data and we can restore all the games on any device for as long as we want. (in theory… I’m going to test it shortly)

  • Len

When ever I try to download one of the Atari games it stops right in the middle and says incorrect data size try using a different internet connection. I have tried the 3G and wireless. Any way of downloading through the app store?
