We had a hunch that Microsoft’s media event today would have something to do with a tablet, and it looks like we were right. The Windows-makers have just unveiled a new slate called the Microsoft Surface.

Described as a “tablet that’s a great PC, and a PC that’s a great tablet,” the Surface looks to be much more than an iPad competitor. It has a 10.6-inch display, magnesium casing, and weighs in at just 1.5 pounds…

Other features of the Surface include a full-sized USB 2.0 port, 9.33mm profile, and a built-in kickstand. And Microsoft has also introduced an interesting accessory for the slate, a multitouch keyboard with a built-in trackpad.

It looks like the Surface will be available in two varieties: one, built on the ARM architecture, running Windows RT tablet software. And a Pro version, which uses Intel CPUs, and runs a full version of Windows 8.

Obviously, you’ll have to make a few trade-offs when going with the Surface Pro. It’s thicker, at just over 13mm, a bit heavier, and has onboard fans. But you also get the benefits of a higher-res display and the added power.

So far, there’s no word on pricing outside of “it’ll be competitive with other tablets,” and nothing regarding a release date. Microsoft did, however, say that the Windows RT version will be available in 32GB and 64GB models, and the Pro version will have higher capacities.

Overall, this looks like a strong, bold play from the Redmond company. And we’re interested to see how well the Surface does with consumers. If nothing else, it’s intriguing that Microsoft is now in the hardware business.

What do you think of the Surface?

    B.S.o.D. tablet.

  • As stated in the article, this definitely looks like an iPad competitor. Similar screen size, its weight and thickness. All of them very similar to iPad.

    • To add on a bit with more of the information, I think Microsoft is making a good approach with this new tablet. People may say this is fail or it is going to suck, but in reality given the specs it sounds very solid and definitely competitive to an iPad.

Of course, I have said this about other tablets and they have failed to succeed in grabbing a chunk of the iPad’s market share.

      • I agree with you. This is the wrong site to be reporting about the release of a microsoft tablet because everyones gonna hate just because its not Apple

  • FAIL

    • Very intelligent comment

  • Be interested to see the price, and to see if it can be brought down for windows 7 :p

    • why exactly , what in the world would possess you to want such a thing, metro was specifically made fore tablets and you want to remove that and to windows 7 lol some people

      • It runs full windows 8, I prefer windows 7. Why is that so terrible to use something i like :/

  • if it is cheaper. like a pc comparing to a mac book. i might consider it..^^

  • what’s the over/under on time to get the blue screen of death? a week? anyone?

    • Leo Sack

Its not that easy to get a BSOD. Have you even used a PC. LOL! Probably not.

      • i owned nothing but PC’s from 1998-2011. i bought my first mbp last february. let me answer your question…”have you even used a PC”…YES…yes i have, a lot. and i CAN say very quickly and easily that winblows freezes and crashes and runs like utter shit. at work….slow, crashing, shit. at school…..windows 7…takes FOREVER to boot up. the first 10 minutes of class is starting up the damn thing and waiting for it to load. i’m beyond thrilled i left the world of windows in my personal life behind. i would be thrilled to NEVER have to use windows ever again for anything.ever!

  • Here is the link for their promo video. Are you kidding me with that smart cover rip off? Let the patent wars begin… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyhjbCX2FWE&feature=youtube_gdata_player

    • oh that’s cute you actually think apple can sue Microsoft

  • Microsoft shit…

  • Haha. It has on board fans! Microsoft is starting to realize it needs to get into the hardware game to compete with Apple. Great news for nerds… a bloatware tablet has finally arrived.

    • I guess maybe if excel and ms word is import, someone might buy it. Still, it looks like it’s made from cheap plastic and I left you long ago Microsoft.

      • Its Liquid Metal…

      • maurid

Oh, have you touched one personally?

      • Surface body is made from magnesium, not cheap plastic like Samsung tablet

And this is made by Microsoft so there will be no bloatware like PC from HP, Asus, Acer etc…get your fact right

      • what a moron, its liquid metal, you fan boys have been frothing at the mouth at only the prospect of the next iPhone or Ipad being liquid metal but when Microsoft does it before apple its cheap plastic, oh no no Microsoft is going to give the ipad the import, while windows tablets will have the real deal of Microsoft office.

    • lol one of the most uninformed opinions ever, the whole reason Microsoft is making their own hardware here is so third party oems dnt fuk it up and put their bloatware on it lol,

  • If the pro version runs windows 8 .. Can it be used as a full on replacement for a net book ? I.e. can you download iTunes and sync your iPhone to it … Sort of thing.. ?

    • Yes since it has a usb 2.0 port but from what i saw it only has 128gb storage

  • Whatever happened to the Microsoft surface, the table computer lol. Does anyone remember that?

    • Lol I do. It looks like the table shrunk a bit.

  • I think I may be replacing my iPad. USB port? Keyboard with trackpad? Heck yes.

    • Charles Valdez

There’s this thing called a laptop. You should look in to it!

      • Generally laptops aren’t touchscreen enabled smart ass 🙂

      • Usually the word touchpad and USB port don’t match with the definition of tablet, this tablet is not post PC it is simply a laptop with a touchscreen that looks sleek, the only company I can think of that fully understands what a tablet is apple

      • maurid

Of course you would think that. You’re obviously obsessed with Apple. Try to keep an open mind, for your own good.

      • i don’t think he has a closed mind. what he says is right, it is essentially a laptop. people bitch about the weight of the iPad…imagine how daunting it is going to be to hold the surface pro. it’s going to be heavy and knowing windows hardware, it is going to run hot as hell so instead of burning your legs it’ll scorch your forearms. i’m all for competition…keep apple on their toes and force them to keep improving their product. we won’t know until a price is set and people have had hands on with it but i would expect it to be expensive and slow. not a chance this thing will best the iPad.

      • @facebook-1067107105:disqus : you don’t know that it’s going to be that much heavier. Honestly. It has a stand for a reason. Most people prop it up on stuff. Plus with that built in “cover keyboard thingy” I would be more comfortable using it propped up anyway, so I can type faster. I eagerly look forward to this device and can’t wait to try it out.

      • Jimmy Chen

        “windows hardware”

Do you mean Microsoft hardware? Or OEM hardware? Microsoft hardware is usually quite good.

      • JaeM1llz

Knowing the Windows hardware? I would love to know when Windows started manufacturing hardware…. It’s not essentially a laptop. It’s a tablet with a keyboard and trackpad. Quite a big difference.

      • Charles Valdez

Uhm,it’s 2012. There are laptops with touchscreens -_- you living under a rock?

  • Is that keyboard a mixture from the ZX spectrum 80 and 81?!

  • YujinNY

great idea the keyboard smart cover but heavy…also microsoft just told their hardware partners to go fuck themselves….lol

  • This looks awesome. Probably gonna replace my iPad. The fact that it has a USB port sells it for me.

  • I applaud Microsoft for doing something Google should have done with Android in releasing their own tablet. You can’t hate on Microsoft for trying, competition is always a good thing. I’m really rooting for this to be great, just so Apple can get a fire under their belly to do that much better, once again. Competition is what makes innovation happen! Right ?

    • I agree. I applaud Microsoft for trying again. Competition will keep Apple on its toes. But I am skeptical. Anyone can make a sleek tablet. I wanna see this device perform. Not the biggest fan of Windows, but that is mainly due to their lack of attention to detail. Let’s hope they stepped it up.

    • So so true

  • but i want to see its functionality..not interested with the design, i want to see what it can do!!! fail video!

  • Why even report on this everyone is just gonna hate because they are all fanboying Apple because this is a iOS and mac site. I love my Apple devices but I’ve never had a iPad and tbh dont want one. My iPhone is just fine for me but i like this idea it is something completely new and looks amazing since Windows 8 is pretty much built for a 10″ touchscreen pc/tablet. Idk what everyone is bitching about tbh

  • FAIL? I think that’s awesome! that smart cover thing with a keyboard… I wish apple made it first

    • I dont, it would be mush more useful witha windows tablet

  • Dan

I love my iPad, but Apple better do something special for the 4 gen iPad or I might jump ship. I doubt I’m the only one that’s thinking it.

    • the main thing they need to rethink is iOS i cant stand it anymore so so stale.

      • I have been waiting 2 years for apple to do something about multitasking. And clearly they are leaving us in the dark. There is a limit for how long we should wait for such a essential function.

I would love to see webos system rebirth.

      • Try Dreamboard for another Os experience…

    • I never thought I would run from apple but after the flop I would say of the iPad 3 I am thinking the Iphone 5 will be a right flop take there maps what a load of trash it will be like Siri sounds good but it never worked that good in the uk and never will apple carnt be bothered to make things better there ain’t no comparison out there other company’s want to knock out something special to make apple panic I am looking to get something
Other than apple if the Iphone 5 don’t look that great bring back Mr jobs none of this would have happened

      • The iPad 3 was hardly a flop. 3 million sold unjust 3 days. Retina display, A5X chip with 1gb ram, quad core GPU,

      • I could barely even read your comment. Have you ever heard of punctuation?

  • Sorry, but I don’t like Microsoft’s new tablet.
Microsoft has basically redesigned the laptop in their new “Tablet”. What does this tablet do that a laptop can’t already do? Nothing. In fact, a laptop would easily out preform this “Tablet”.
My point: Microsoft, let’s keep tablets and laptops two separate things.

    • You clearly dont get that its supposed to be a small portable Pc that can be used as a tablet also. I would much rather carry this around instead of a 15″ laptop.

  • the keyboard looks awesome

  • MadAndronicus

    1. I think Microsoft has BEEN in the hardware business for many years now.
    2. I believe pro version gets USB 3.0

    • Yep Pro gets 3.0

  • maurid

The bias here makes me sick. We should keep these kinds of articles away from iDB, at least until people learn that there is a world outside of Apple.

  • DomPerignon1

I love my iPad 2 but this one looks like a winner. It runs Windows 8, has a beautiful keyboard, has a USB port, and Bluetooth; definitely a winner! Let’s wait and see what else is inside.

  • I believe this is the best compitetion for the iPad yet. The price is my concern.. Im guessing this will push the price higher since its will come equipped with a full version of the OS, NOT a mobile version. This is what Apple should be working towrds, bringing iOS and OS X together to a centralized OS, not a limited mobile version that is locked down.. unlike the Microsoft Surface.

    • best system ever I saw on tablets is webos on hp touchpad. Beautiful work almost an art, which got killed by apple and itself. Multitasking is an example for apple how to handle it in the future.

  • If apple doesn’t add a USB port I’m getting the Surface

  • ExRoot

I like it and I’m interested. I have no problem kicking my iPad to the curb! I want function!

    • i agree. The more competition the better it is for us users.

  • on engadget they said according to MS the surface pro pricing is going to be in line with the ultrabooks…so $1,000.00+++?? LOL hahahahahahaha this is not competition for the iPad. perhaps competition with a MBA where it has the advantage of a touchscreen. this is just sad.

  • Looks like they wanted their video to look like a cross between an iPad and droid commercial

  • JaeM1llz

Looks great, it’s about time Apple started getting some serious competition. Without competition there is no incentive to improve. Everyone hating on this tablet is clearly an Apple fanboy. I will definitely be looking into purchasing this.

  • It seems more like it’s competing with a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air rather than competing with the iPad.

  • prghon

Microsoft is definitely getting their act together, which started with the release of Windows 7. Whereas Google is becoming the new old Microsoft with its botched releases, useless makeovers and forced upgrades. I used to be a great Google fan, now I hate them just as much as I hated Microsoft before the Win7 era.

  • price is the biggest factor for me, if it costs $1000 screw that lol

  • tward09

This is amazingly enticing. I don’t know if I want to buy an iPad anymore.

  • come on microsoft u can kick googles giagantic green robot ass and get into 2nd place after apple 🙂

  • twited21

That looks cool I can feel the dark side calling me

  • Wael Abdo

    and the race has begun…

  • This looks good. USB port? Good idea. Hopefully this wil give Apple a kick up the backside so that they start improving their tablets more.
One thing, does it have a virtual keyboard too? Or at least an option for it? Or do you have to keep the case on?

    • Pukka12

It has a virtual keyboard. Not everyone will want to purchase the keyboard case.

  • Roni Isometsä

Whats same think whit it? MacBook Air whit not touchscreen 😀

  • How long until OS X gets ported over to it? Hackintosh anyone..

On a more realistic note this does look pretty good, being an avid Apple user, iMac, MacBooks, iPhones, iPads etc, this does make me wonder how handy something like this could be. Will be keeping my eye on this, probably won’t buy one, but I am interested in how it performs.

  • Even though I’m a huge fan of Apple, this is pretty awesome

  • Jeri Cho

Just wait until the Surface is scratched by viruses. Just hope it has backup and restoration option as simple as iTunes.

  • I can’t believe it, but MS pulled it off and did what was missing on iPad and Mac Book Air now you have both in one. Except, 4 factors will define if this is a home run or not. Price / Battery Life / User Interface, speed / OS Stability against Virus etc.

  • great tone how can i get it to my iPhone??

  • It shouldn’t even br called a tablet..it’s a laptop, just because one it’s versions run a tablet OS it makes it a tablet!
