10 jailbreak tweaks that were killed by iOS 6

By , Jun 12, 2012

With the release of iOS 5 last year, it was pretty clear that Apple had gotten plenty of inspiration from the jailbreak scene, notably by implementing 20+ jailbreak tweaks in its latest mobile operating system.

We were expecting Apple to do the same thing again this year, and in anticipation, we even came out with our own list of jailbreak tweaks we wanted to see in iOS 6.

If it isn’t as obvious as last year, it’s still evident that iOS has already killed a few jailbreak tweaks. We go over the list of those tweaks that were made obsolete by iOS 6…

StayOpened

Now that you can download several apps from the App Store without having to launch the App Store app again and again after each download, there is no more need for StayOpened.

Pull to Refresh for Mail

Developed a couple years ago, Pull to Refresh for Mail is a goner too now that Apple has implemented Pull to Refresh in its Mail application.

AssistantExtension

By baking Sports into Siri, tweaks like AssistantExtension and especially SiriSports are nowhere near as useful.

International Location for Siri

Because it is now compatible with a dozen languages, and more importantly because it is fully supported in many new countries, the jailbreak tweak International Location for Siri is not going to be needed anymore.

Fusion/FacebookThis

With Facebook’s deep integration into iOS 6, tweaks like Fusion and FacebookThis are somewhat useless.

3G Unrestrictor

If you didn’t feel to pay $3.99 for 3G Unrestrictor, you’ll be happy to know that iOS 6 will finally let you do FaceTime calls over cellular network. Although it’s fair to note that this feature will only be available for the iPhone 4S and the new iPad, as per our iOS 6 compatibility guide.

PhotoMail

When it first came out, PhotoMail was a nice little tweak that would allow you to attach pictures and videos directly from the Mail app. This feature is now directly baked into iOS 6.

Fullscreen for Safari

Sure Fullscreen Mode for Safari does much more than what its name suggests, but it’s still a victim of iOS 6 to some extent, now that Safari lets you switch to full screen mode – only in landscape mode though.

QuickTweet

QuickTweet lets you send tweets from Notification Center. It’s useless now.

BannerDisable

BannerDisable was doomed from the start as it was created after we started hearing rumor that Apple would implement the “Do Not Disturb” feature in iOS 6.

As much as I love and support the jailbreak community, I’m glad Apple is implementing those features in iOS. What about you?

Can you think of more tweaks made useless by iOS 6?

[Thanks @EvilPenguin_ for his input]

AssistantExtensions has dozens more features and plugins beyond SiriSports. Is there a settings toggle addition in iOS 6? How about a YouTube search addon? A chat bot?

sad about 3G Unrestrictor users :-(

    • 2008crna

There is nothing “sad” about it. Since iOS 6 only allows the Facetime over the cellular network for the iPhone 4S and iPad (3), it is a useful tweak for those who don’t have the A5 devices.

      • Ernesto Carrillo

        A4 devices as well

    • Dan

more like, sad about the 3G unrestrictor developer, he won’t be making as many sales soon

    • ReanimationXP

Can you still not Skype over 3G or did they fix that? What’s the currently app download over 3g MB limit?

      • http://twitter.com/machinegun Linda

I Skype over 3G all the time, and I’m able to download Skype over 3G now too. So yay for that.

      • ReanimationXP

I meant how big of an app can you get. You can’t download Infinity Blade over 3G for instance without 3G Unrestrictor.

Do they now let you stream hd youtube? Can you Dl apps more than 50 MB? can you facetime in 3g with 4th gen? still a few good uses out of 3G unristrictor i think

  • http://twitter.com/T1rell T1rell

the more suitable title would be: “10 jailbreak tweaks that were stolen by iOS 6″

apple should at least make jailbreaking easier if they re using it as their private testing area for new ios features. how about some credit for the devs who had the ideas in the first place, apple?

    • Eric Zeiberg

      I agree 100% with T1rell

    • Roddisq

      Like always…

    • http://twitter.com/lambo_man_r2 NOT Courtenay T!

You and 13 other people are stupid. That’s like saying that Apple stole the idea of “calling” from Alexander Graham Bell. To say that Apple stole these ideas is absurd. I could understand if Apple used the exact same code, but I doubt that is the case. The more jailbreak tweaks baked into iOS, the better. Having to not jailbreak would be a big yes. Why have to miss out on upgrading to future iOS versions and having to restore all the time? I think Apple is doing great.

      • http://twitter.com/ahill21070 anthony

        I agree 100%

      • http://twitter.com/blakeway66 paul blakeway

        Totally agree

      • http://twitter.com/therealjdizzle Jason Masters

Nope apple stole them plain and simple

      • http://twitter.com/BenHoenes Ben Hoenes

        Agreed.
People act like Apple and the Jailbreak community are rivals of some kind, when in truth they work together to make the operating system evolve.
It’s a healthy relationship, I’m glad Apple are using Jailbreakera to “research” what features people would want in the next iOS!

      • Emre SÜMENGEN

There’s no rivalry, except that Apple is constantly trying to STOP jailbreaking… So, I don’t believe it’s weird to WISH for some more freedom on that front.

And, as ideas are the mainstream behind all we have today, a few nice touches during the Keynote would not be bad. Not a necessity though.

        So, even though I think it’s normal for Apple to “inspire” their innovation from existing 3rd parties, I believe;
        1) Credit should be given where it’s due
        2) If something is helping you go beyond where you are right now, one should embrace it more, instead of trying to stab it in the back.

        2c…

      • Emre SÜMENGEN

Jailbreaking has NEVER been “having to restore all the time” for me. And, as far as I can tell, every iOS version has it’s (pretty easy) jailbreak available… (And, I’ve been using an iPhone since version 2.)

And, I would never use an iPhone/iPad if jailbreaking was not possible, even if Apple could adopt every jailbreak tweak that’s available right now.

You want to know why? There will be tons of tweaks that seems to be outside of Apple’s vision IN THE FUTURE. I’m not committed to Apple, and I like the feeling of having independence and alternatives…

PS: By starting your so called “comment” with calling people “stupid” just because they think different than you do, I believe you’ve certified yourself with being either a Gigantic Jackass or a Troll… So, in both cases, go back to your cave, please.

      • http://www.facebook.com/JETLAB Baltej Dhaliwal

you do realize there are things in cydia like xbackup that puts all your jailbreaking stuff right where it was before, and you don’t need to restore anything, either wait for the jailbreak to come out in ios6 and then xbackup will download all your stuff back from cydia or just upgrade to ios 6, then wait for the jailbreak to come out and do the same thing

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/RYGJABH4DKV7XZ7FM2SKPLUO2M Mohamed

i also agree….first place to testing

    • http://twitter.com/murdoc2k Alex

That’s not possible because jailbreaking is done by exploiting iOS loopholes. Allowing it publicly would mean apple tolerates people hacking into their smartphone OS. Making it easier for the jailbreak era means hackers can easily gain access to iPhones creating a massive PR nightmare.

  • http://twitter.com/amad_ahmed01 Amad

Apple always wants people to invent their own stuff and not copy them, yet they take other peoples ideas. ios users are happy with stuff that comes as standard in other phones.
i.e song ringtones wasn’t that 10 years ago?

  • http://twitter.com/JefferyJkc Jeffery

if they include something like sbettting it will be much better.

  • Codvisp

It’s also important to note that Assistant Extensions has a major bug that breaks the sound of the keyboard strokes when Siri is invoked. Anyway, I have already uninstalled it…

    • 2008crna

Who the hell wants keyboard sounds? Click-click-click-click-click…..I turned that crap off on day one.

      • Emre SÜMENGEN

I do, so what? So boring to type without that “crap”…

      • http://twitter.com/redevil1987 Damian W

I annoys the hell out of me

      • Codvisp

Well some do and some don’t… The main point here is that AE has a major BUG and should be fixed! Btw, I only mentioned the AK47 damn keyboard clicks, but THE bug also affects other music & sound apps… No need to elaborate more…

  • f5faith

Good start from Apple. Now to see if they include Siri APIs (or something similar to AssistExtension *PAH HAHA*) or possibly Zephyr… Actually Apple I’m begging you please implement Zephyr! I literally can’t live without it.

  • http://twitter.com/Fr0sT_RC1 Matt

3G unrestrictor will still be needed for iPhone 4, iPad 2 and iPod touch 4G users bc facetime over cellular is only available for the 4S and new iPad. NOT DEAD YET!

  • http://www.facebook.com/tx.mattscott Matthew Scott

3G Unrestrictor will still be useful for downloading large apps over a 3G connection though.

  • Tavish Satrom

I’m Busy SMS is a tweak that I use all the time. I am in meetings a lot. Being able to text my callers fast and let them know that I’m busy is a nice feature. Now that reply to caller is built in I won’t need it anymore.

      • Emre SÜMENGEN

So, what’s the use? I mean, it won’t be stable for day to day use, at least in the first beta I predict…

Maybe, if you have a second device, it might be nice to do some hands-on with the new features. But, I doubt many have a second 4S or iPad3 lying around unused :( (

I guess you will need to wait another few months or maybe a year to get your country. It seems apple is enjoying making tiny steps, instead giving users what they deserve.

Yes, and it’s just not good enough.

      • Falk M.

Do you work in speech recognition industry?
        Or in AI industry? No?

Creating language support for such an application isn’t something you just create in a couple of weeks or “translate”.
It’s rebuilding the grammar system every time again, let alone the other parts of the AI.

I think they are speeding it up quite nicely, although of course it would have been awesome had it happened earlier. :)

Should be titled “10 jailbreak tweaks stollen by Apple because they can’t think of anything new to keep customers happy and now depend on the jailbreaking community to bail them out while apple reap all the glory.”

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/335I7GRHPJ7MJSVUYLOC5B2MSM Tom

If Apple only added features that were never in the jailbreak community first, then the iPhone would be shit.

      • http://twitter.com/Dongiuj DonGiuj

Exactly. Looks like apple is losing their innovation that everyone babbles on about and looking to other people to do most of the work for them.
Notification center drop down screen ( similar to android ), Siri ( from another company ), app integration ( jailbreak community ), etc.
        I fail to see “innovation”.

      • Falk M.

So you want Apple to focus on dodging good features, because they can’t “innovate” them and instead only implement what can’t be found elsewhere?

Jesus… I’ll go with the “do both” route and get more features along the way.

If you fail to see innovation you clearly don’t look “closely” enough. Not that you need to “seek” it, but yeah…

(clearly not on the copied featured, even though I prefer Apple implementations over some halfa**ed solution who’ll drop support for it as soon as he/she does get bored of it – a problem with some tweaks)

      • http://twitter.com/redevil1987 Damian W

I would not call apple as a completely innovative company. However, they posses something other companies dont do. Apple is great in borrowing various ideas and putting them all together in a very stable environment. The single ideas they borrowed it not innovation, but trying to make a great productive device definitely is.

      • http://www.facebook.com/marclewis4 Marc Lewis

If you say Apple don’t innovate, they surely perfect things that work and are very reliable. That’s all I’m after.

      • http://twitter.com/nephitejnf Joseph Fidler

“Good programmers write good code, great programmers steal great code.” This is the world we live in, I am glad for the open source community in these respects.

      • http://twitter.com/redevil1987 Damian W

I always go back to old ios version just because the jailbreak offers so much more. After checking ios 6, I realized that it is saturated with some new features which I will never use. And more importantly, the best features in ios 6 are not available for a4 devices!!!! Jesus. It makes me wanna scream at apple. SO i guess I should head to the store now and buy a new iphone for 700, just because Apple counts on customer stupidity. Siri and 3d maps are not 700 dollar woth applications.

    • MohzeenHansrod

Dude, these are concepts that A LOT of people thought of, so Apple wasn’t stealing anything, it was simply Apple releasing the inevitable upgrades that the Jailbreak Community got to first, but Apple definitely thought of them as well.

    • Emre SÜMENGEN

       Troll :)

      • Emre SÜMENGEN

Your comment really did not make sense and actually felt like trolling. That was not name-calling, that was what I believe you’re after, with a bit of humor in it.

Sorry for assuming you would get it the way I simply meant…

  • babiloe

Facebreak is the free app that killed by FaceTime over cellular on ios 6. 3G unrestrictor can do more than that, it can fake wifi for cellular for download bigger app, hi definition via youtube, fake connection for other apps.

  • christodouluke

Fusion does more than just facebook, you dingus. Assistant Extensions does far more than just sports. How thoroughly did you research this article? It’s shit, fix your article.

    • Falk M.

Very eloquent, please carry on how he claimed that “Assistant Extensions” is now obsolete and how he said it’s “completely copied”.
Also note that “somewhat” doesn’t mean “entirely”. Hence, Fusion is “somewhat useless”, because I bet most people only use it’s Facebook part.

Please take those strong words you used and use them for yourself if anything, or better yet: don’t use them at all, because it’s rude. Fix your comment.

sorry apple, you will never kill the jailbreak community. You killed a few tweaks in iOS 6. ut for every tweak you kill, 10 more will be created

    • Emre SÜMENGEN

They are definitely NOT trying to kill the JB community by implementing the same/similar concepts.

Popular concepts are deemed to be implemented on the production code when possible, everywhere.

If only Apple could stop fighting the JB’ers efforts by
      a) forcing SHSH/Apt-Ticket on restores
      b) trying new encryption algorithms etc. on each release to further harden against jailbreaking
      it would be awesome…

yeah i wish apple killed whole cydia in the way. I would not mind it.

      • http://twitter.com/klouud Timothy Polumbo

If Apple would implement enough of the jailbreak tweaks then most people would stop jail braking. I honestly think that if they allowed users to customize the springboard icons then 50% of all jail breakers would stop jail breaking.

      • Emre SÜMENGEN

Mmmm, even Jeff himself (who admits to love new themes) isn’t doing anything on there any more…

So, I doubt theming is a primary concern for jailbreakers, at least now.

      • http://www.facebook.com/marclewis4 Marc Lewis

Even though I have not and have no desire to jailbreak my iPhone, I would not want the jail breaking community to stop. It’s good to see what’s possible.

  • http://twitter.com/falconoble enriko lucas menzies

So… it was once necessary to jailbreak our devices to get these features, and now that Apple gives it out natively we’re bringing the pitchforks out? Last I checked we were asking for this stuff for quite a while.

Honestly, if I had the choice between installing a tweak to either keep the App Store opened or directly attach photos to an e-mail and just having the firmware do it natively… I’d probably pick the latter. It just saves time.

I mean, wasn’t that the point of these tweaks anyway? To meet the need, to fill the hole that Apple left open? It’s a little hard for me to get mad about it, much less dramatic.

Besides, if we know who wrote the tweaks first… how exactly is Apple stealing the glory? It’s not like we suddenly just forgot. I’m sure there’s still plenty of stuff about iOS that people are going to want to change, and until every Apple device becomes absolutely impenetrable I think we’re all in the clear.

    • http://twitter.com/Dongiuj DonGiuj

I agree with you on pretty much everything you said but I think it’s the part that apple is reaping all the glory (from apple fans) for something they originally didn’t think of.
I think it’s great that they add all these little tweaks here and there, i really do! But they should publicly thank the jailbreak community for that instead of acting like apple is the “innovative” company they make out they are and walking up and down the stage at wwdc with a “I’m innovative and that’s what we thought of” look on their faces while the audience are clapping their hands and going “Hell yeah! Wahooo!

      • Emre SÜMENGEN

Well, yes, I’d find it nice if they did thank the JB community. But, the way Apple implements a solution is usually much prettier and includes much-deeper thinking than a jailbreak tweak. (And, this is normal, as they own the code.)

So, they may be inspired by a tweak or an idea… But, I doubt we’ll see/hear a public thanks any time soon. I would not care about it, if I was a tweak dev either.

  • http://twitter.com/ahill21070 anthony

Did they get paid for it I don’t think Just took it. I don’t think Apple just took it I’m pretty sure they got a big ass check

A quick compose for messages and a deck style settings feature would be nice in future iOS updates. Yet even with these current iOS 6 updates, Im finding less reasons to jailbreak. I just want my device to be functional and user friendly. With jail breaking the device runs horrible unless you use only a couple of tweaks
After jacking up my iPhone there’s no way I’m jail breaking my new iPad. With iOS6 I am happily saying goodbye to jail breaking, not worth the restoring, freezing, glitching, and security issues.

  • http://www.facebook.com/dominic.boudreau Dominic Boudreau

Play Awake won’t be needed anymore!

  • http://twitter.com/Devin_Plebuch Devin Plebuch

I disagree–I instead to still use Quick Compose for fast updates to both Twitter and Facebook, insteadnofnusing the new NC methods (because the updates would be done one by one). AssistantExtentions is far more valuable than just Siri Sports–utilizing it for toggle control, for utilizing AssitantLove (yeah, you can use hands-free control and Siri to make Apple’s GPS capabilities, but not Spotify). While PhotoMail may be, AnyAttach isn’t going to be killed simply because of the ability to add a photograph. I use 3G unrestrictor all the time for non-FaceTime apps; like restoring my phone from the cloud while at work and traveling to and from.

As far as Do Not Disturb, I’m more interested in seeing how the makers of Ringerx VIP manage to modify it to work with their tweak.

  • Adam Coughran

it said on the apple website face time only over 4G thats why 4s and new ipad only

  • Wael Abdo

hope they reach a stage where they minimize the jailbreak tweaks to a very silly number.

  • http://www.facebook.com/bangalisoundz AtikuЯ ‘skiTzo’ Яahmaи

The way I see it, Apple doesn’t always ‘Steal’ ideas that are popular from the JB community – if that was the case, SBSettings, Activator & others like iFile & Zephyr would already be implemented..I think they have plans to implement certain features in future updates, but the community just gets there first..

    • http://twitter.com/PeterTheMooCow Peter Cao

Apple has their own version of activator

  • Sue Jobson

I wish the developers in the jailbreak community were offered recognition for showing Apple the way!!

  • http://twitter.com/arielboiardi Betelgeuse

All we know that almost every change that Apple does on the iOS is inspired by the experience of Cydia tweaks… Also in iOS5 the “new” Notification Center was surely based on the lots os tweaks that allowed this function. But can we say that we don’t like the NC?

  • http://twitter.com/Ghost7wee7er Ghost Tweeter

So nothing new for the iphone4 looks like they have given up on doing anything for them users. Looks like I’ll be staying on 5.1.1

    • http://twitter.com/redevil1987 Damian W

YEah, I guess we can all throw out our iphnones 4 and head to the store to buy brand new phone for 700. Is siri and 3d maps worth that much. I guess I will stick to tomtom app, which is probably much better in navigation anyway.

  • House Lannister

You’d think Apple would at least acknowledge the Jailbreak community’s contribution…smdh

    • http://twitter.com/redevil1987 Damian W

Apple will never acknowledge jailbreak community, unless it becomes clear that without jailbreaking sales are going down. I wish this happens to apple.

it is interesting  that BannerDIsable from cydia was created just before ios 6 release and it looks very similar to apple tweak. Hmmmm, did both parties copy this from somewhere else, or the dev in cydia has some connections with apple?
