Absinthe 2.0 proves jailbreaking is as popular as ever

By , May 28, 2012

If you were wondering whether or not people were still wildly interested in jailbreaking, then wonder no more. The Chronic Dev team, the folks behind the Absinthe 2.0 jailbreak tool for iOS 5.1.1, have stated via twitter that its tool has been used to jailbreak over a million devices since it was released on Friday morning.

Unsurprisingly, those numbers look to be a tad higher this time around when compared to the release of the original Absinthe tool back in January.

Obviously the comparisons aren’t exactly scientific, but I think it’s safe to say that jailbreaking has maintained and/or increased its popularity since earlier this year…

Was your iOS device included in those numbers? How has your overall experience with this jailbreak been? Let us know all of your thoughts in the comments below.

  • One bug still 🙁 white blank icons!
Oh also i get the hidden apps when I install somthing from cydia…
Any fixes for that? A permant fix no cleaning cache fix..

    • just respring via sbsettings it fixes the white icons.

      • That is not a fix!!

Springtomize 2’s “Reload Settings” option works every time.

      • SBSettings does not work, and neither does Springtomize 2. I used iRetiner to fix my white icons, and so far, I haven’t received any more white icons.

    • Use Springtomize 2 to hide the apps then they wont return. If you hide apps with Sbsettings they will return everytime you install something with cydia. 🙂 Hope this helps worked for me.

And for the white icons i dont have a fix only to respring but thats not really a fix but more a solution 🙂

    • I don’t have the white icons, didn’t had them with the initial 5.0.1 jailbreak neither. Like 1 month ago, suddenly the problem started to appear. Now with the new jailbreak the problem is gone again…

    • Open Cydia Go to Manage>Settings>Developer done. Now search for libhide and install or reinstall it. Just Respring and enjoy.

      • It is not going to work bro, there is a bug on libhide pay load and its need to be fixed by saurik.

      • Had the same problem on iPad 3 & iPhone 4. Reinstalling libhide helped me to Fix that.

  • my iPhone is unlocked, so in my case I don’t need to jailbreak it to unlock or to use, but I don’t think I can live using it without jailbreak.
Jailbreak puts the word awesome with the word device in side your iDevice.
I think Apple must support it, not fight it that it makes it’s products WOW. and Google must fight it that jailbreak increase the competition between iOS and Android.

  • I used it to jailbreak my ipad2. It was a simple quick and easy jailbreak that anyone could follow. So far I have had no issues.

I jail broke my iPad 3. Worked perfectly and fairly quickly. Now I’ll need to update my 4s and 4 to 5.1.1

  • Purchased an iPad on day of JB and hell yeah jailbreaked it day one!

  • Proud to be one of it — The jailbreaker

I’m using iOS 5.0.1 with previouse untethered jailbreak, Do I really need to update to iOS 5.1.1?

    • Jundu Kundu

what kind of question is that? OH NO, IT JUST SAYS IOS 5.1.1 IN BOLD LETTERS ON THE PAGE FOR NO APPARENT REASON.

      • Anonymous

+1 if you think Jundu Kundu’s an arsehole.

No…you don’t “need” to. I would advise it tho. The 5.1.1 untether is soon smooth…fast..no lag anywhere…I was going to go back to 5.0.1 because of Music Controls Pro not being compatible, and ISX not allowing my CDMA iPhone to switch between 3G & 2G like it does on 5.0.1…but the 5.1.1 jailbreak with Absinthe is so ridiculously smooth and flawless, I think I’ll wait for those 2 tweaks to get updated…even tho not having MC Pro and not being able to force 2G(1xrtt) just may drive me crazy. But it seems well worth it for how much more stable it is compared to 5.0.1,.didnt realize how crappy and unstable 5.0.1 really was til I updated to 5.1.1. The choice is yours tho…as usuall. You can stay on 5.0.1 if you choose. I would suggest to update and enjoy the flawlessness of the 5.1.1 untether tho.

      • Ziig bro .. you seem super knoweledgable can you help me answer my question .. ?

Im new to jailbreaking and cydia .. Is there anyway to make cydia stay signed it . I tried both google and facebook. And its not like i close the app . The app is still there in the dock . But everytime i go back to cydia i have to keep going to manage my account –> Link with facebook/google ? Is this normal ..

Secondly i didn’t do a restore . I just ran absinthe 2.1 (cuz they bugs fixed) on my device and i got this at the end “could not connect to lockdown.. aborting” however i didn’t panic as this has happened to 2-3 people in the comments. And even after this error i still got cydia icon and everything is running smoothly . been 3 days .. Is this ok ..

    • yes update to 5.1.1 . check the firmware version . if its 9b206 then use abisnthe 2.0 or 2.1
      if 9b208 use 2.2

    • I’d consider checking if your (currently installed) tweaks will work on iOS 5.1.1 first before making that decision.

Thats up to you. If u like some of the new features in the new update it might be for you. I kept my iPhone4 on 5.0.1 due to compatibility with Siri. I updated my new iPad so I could be on the newest software and be Jailbroken and untethered. The funny thing is I updated my iPhone4s and the battery life seemed better on iOS5.0.1! Hopefully this helps, check all compatibility of your important packages before you go updating. If u have shsh

      • I just commented about the battery. I have the same problem. On 5.0.1 the battery life was better. Now it drains really fast. Anyone else with the same problem?

  • I believe the more and more people will jailbreak these devices as long as developers make more and efficient tweaks that should already be implanted in IOS. I see more and more where tweaks are coming more handy then let’s say a winterboard/dreamboard theme

  • cydiaaaa is so annoying not refreshing sources omg ;sssss

    • I had the same problem, but after I used Absinthe 2.0.2 the problem is gone, BTW i used to see the on Cydia, but not anymore, it is doing well now.
I’m not professional, I think Absinthe installs Cydia from the zero, however redsn0w install it with more things.

  • I am running 5.0.1 (9A405) and depend on a Gevey unlock.
I use to use Sn0wbrease but since I got a MacBook Im not sure what to use now!?
I need to preserve and hacktivate my phone. Please advise.

    • If you want to preserve your baseband, use redsn0w to make a custom FW.

  • Count me in, I love jailbreaking… THANKS DREAM TEAM

Please answer both questions : (

  • Is Cydia supposed to have rocky installed? I jailbroke with absinthe 5.1.1 and it had rocky installed already…

    • Yes.. Don’t remove or you’ll have to restore

  • I have a little problem….when i try to delete some apps from app store my phone stop responding for about 2-3 minutes, after that respring it self!Is there someone could help me:)sorry about my bad english;)

  • i am running 5.0.1 iphone 4s. first i have to go to itunes to update to 5.1.1 and then jailbreak with absinthe the 5.1.1 ?

    • Yes. But do a backup before in iTunes (right click on the device), so you won’t loose anything. Then update. Then go through the steps on the iphone to finish the instalation as a NEW iPhone. Then jailbreak. Then open Cydia. Then respring your device. Then restore the backup in iTunes (right click on the device). Then install what ever repos and apps you want to. 😀

  • I also have a bug although I’m not sure if it’s to do with an old jailbreak tweak which I can’t remember. If I press the home button to bring up the lock screen, when I tap the camera icon the whole screen just jumps up and comes back down, only like half a centimeter but it’s annoying. I used to have a tweak installed when on 5.0.1 where I replaced the camera icon for the torch, but I havn’t re-installed that tweak since doing a full restore, jailbreak then restore from back up.

    Any idea’s?

I don’t think that I would be able to use an iPhone without a jailbreak. There are just too many features that I would want.

  • I couldn’t jailbreak my iPad 2 🙁 still waiting also still haven’t jailbroken my 4s so lol I’m not part of those #’s

  • naheed asif

just a a quick question has anybody else noticed that the sound volume on ringing is low on ios 5.1.1 4s but on youtube its normal loud like before on 5.0.1 it was good and loud on both

  • naheed asif

will somebody please put on cydia a volume boost for ios 5.1.1 my 4s is too low thanks

  • paul featherstone

Battery life as dropped by about 13 %

    • I have the same problem. I was wondering if it has to do with the jailbreak since 5.1.1 was supposed to have better battery life. 🙁

  • I am glad my iphone is jailbroken. But with the new version 5.1.1 my battery drains a lot faster than before… Anyone else has this problem? It was supposed to be better, can it be a problem of the jailbreak? I went straight from 5.0.1 untethered to 5.1.1 untethered.

  • I JB-ed iphone4 and ipad3….all went perfectly in my windows7 enterprise x86 machine.
    Only one issue… Installed winterboard

  • Winterb in my ipad3 and installed some incompatible themes – that made me restore and re JB …..waiting for compatible stuffs for the new iPad
