How to prepare for the iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak

By , May 21, 2012

The upcoming iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak release is imminent. It’s so close we can almost smell it.

For that reason, it would be wise to go ahead and analyse your current situation, and prepare for the jailbreak.

It has been confirmed that the A5 portion of the jailbreak — the jailbreak for iPhone 4S, iPad 2, and the iPad 3 — will only support iOS 5.1.1.

While nothing has been said about A4 devices, it’s a good chance that iOS 5.1.1 will be required to jailbreak any device with the new Absinthe tool across the board.

So what should you do? Should you update your device now, or wait until the jailbreak has been officially released?

Regardless of what you decide to do, I highly advise you to head over to our downloads page, and download the iOS 5.1.1 firmware for all of the devices you plan to jailbreak. Go ahead and save the iOS 5.1.1 firmware to a place that you can easily identify later. I like organizing my firmware into folders for each device.

The next thing I recommend doing is further analyzing your situation. If you have a new iPad (iPad 3), go ahead and update now to iOS 5.1.1. This makes sense, because this is an A5 device, and there isn’t a preexisting jailbreak for the new iPad anyway.

If you have an iPhone 4S, or an iPad 2, it’s a more calculated judgement call. If you’re already jailbroken on either of these devices running iOS 5.0.1, then you may decide to hold off until the new jailbreak is released. Otherwise, you would temporarily lose your jailbreak until Absinthe 2.0 is officially released.

You could also decide that you don’t care about being on iOS 5.1.1, or that you don’t want to be on iOS 5.1.1 for various reasons. Keep in mind that a lot of the time it takes a while for every new tweak to be updated to support the latest firmware. The good news is that iOS 5.1.1 isn’t an astronomical upgrade like going from iOS 4.3.3 to iOS 5.0, so compatibility problems shouldn’t be a gargantuan issue.

If, however, you recently purchased an iPhone 4S or an iPad 2 preinstalled with iOS 5.1, then go ahead and update to iOS 5.1.1.

If you have an A4 device: (iPhone 4, iPod touch 4th generation) then it’s really up to you. Hopefully you’ve been proactive in saving your SHSH blobs, so you can always downgrade to previous firmware. iOS 5.1.1 is already jailbreakable (tethered) on iOS 5.1.1 for A4 devices, so chances are you may already have iOS 5.1.1 on your A4 device.

Regardless of your situation, the jailbreak — barring any unforeseen hiccups — should be released this week. Even if you were to be without a jailbreak for a few days, even the most hardcore jailbreaker can usually manage a few days without his or her favorite tweak.

Whatever you decide to do, please, please, please save your SHSH blobs. It never hurts, and you just never know when those will come in handy. Also, bear in mind that this doesn’t take into account unlocking. If you need to unlock it’s always smart to proceed with extreme caution prior to updating.

What will you be doing in preparation for the upcoming jailbreak?

Thanks guys, very nice work!!! And for those who use custom ipsw jailbreak? Will the jailbreak be available in sn0wbreeze or pwangetool?

as the jailbreak cycle goes, it will. definitely.

thanks :D Hope so :D I want to hacktivate :D

Yay I’m so hype for the easy way of jailbreak!! So fonna update my phone through wifi and straight away jailbreak when it’s released!

  • http://www.facebook.com/Sereyvuth.Seng Seng Sereyvuth

that’s good, and i also already updated to iOS5.1.1 a few weeks ago since i heard the new about the Release of Untethered Jailbreak….

  • UZMAN -

I have an iphone 4 5.0.1 Untethered JB.
can I just update to ios 5.1.1 using the iphone itself in settings? What will happen if i DO?

    • http://twitter.com/Tkf530 Tristan

The update will fail. You’ll need to upgrade to iOS 5.1.1 in iTunes.

      • UZMAN -

oh. What if i put a thethered JB for 5.1.1, can I just install the untethered over it when it comes out? Will all data like tweaks go away if i do that?

      • http://twitter.com/Sibayan Francis Sibayan

you can back up your cydia tweaks with xbackup (from cydia) watch youtube videos on how to use it.

try it, but It won’t work. You must update via itunes

I wouldn’t update, restore it cuz it could mess up your device.

the jailbreak on the phone will make the update fail and be careful with the baseband if you are using gevey sim

Can we save our 5.1.1 shsh blobs? if we can can ou please say where?

I think I can do it in tinyumbrella. Will save shsh blobs be in iFaith? for 5.1.1

I saved my 5.1.1 blobs for my iPhone 4 but the SHSH for it is not showing on the cydia homepage. I am on 5.1.1 tethered at the moment. Should I be worried?

      • Michael Hoskins

I think TinyUmbrella saves the SHSH to the computer it’s run on (I could be wrong, but I think there was some change in compatibility with sending to Cydia). On my Windows machine it saved to “C:Users.shsh” (Insert your username) and ignore this —>

Jeff could you do a video when the jailbreak is release on how to unlock my iPhone with the SAM method on 5.1.1 please!??

    • http://www.youtube.com/myjailbreakmovies/ Jeff Benjamin

That’s been fixed by Apple, you won’t be able to do that.

      • http://twitter.com/MarvinDenis Marvin Denis

        Hi Jeff,

I’m currently using the SAM method on my iPhone 4 5.0.1 and I saved my activation ticket like you showed us with your videos.

My question is, do you think I will be able to restore the activation ticket once I’ll update to 5.1.1 ? Or will I lose the unlock?

Thank you for all these tutorial,.. btw :-)

      • http://twitter.com/MrMESTIRI MESTIRI Ahmed

yes you will be able to restore it after the jailbreak

  • davred64

Can i just re-jailbreak tethered 5.1.1 with untethered or do i have to restore then jailbreak?

    • http://www.youtube.com/myjailbreakmovies/ Jeff Benjamin

That’s still unclear at the moment. I wouldn’t think so, but can’t say 100%.

  • Thies Verhave

Is apple planning to release a new iOS on the day the iOS 5.1.1 jailbreak is released?

    • http://www.youtube.com/myjailbreakmovies/ Jeff Benjamin

That, to my knowledge, has never happened. I don’t see that happening in the future either. If there are any security holes that could leave their userbase vulnerable like the PDF exploit in the jailbreakme days, then they could act a little faster. But Apple tends to not rush updates because of a jailbreak unless there is a gaping security hole that has been exploited. Even then, it still takes them a while to respond.

    • Michael Hoskins

My more paranoid thought was “they could, they could.” They probably wont, but I updated to 5.1.1 as soon as I heard the jailbreak would support it. I’ve been able to live without the jb it for four days.

  • http://twitter.com/AflekBen Немања

What about A4 devices on 5.1 (JB+tethered) ? Should we update/restore to 5.1.1 or will we be able to jailbreak the 5.1 firmware with Absinthe 2.0?

    • http://twitter.com/MrMESTIRI MESTIRI Ahmed

what you gonna a loose if you upgrade? Nothing. Once you’re on 5.1.1, you’ll at least get rid of the red bubble on settings icon :p ;)

      • http://twitter.com/AflekBen Немања

I am jailbroken and have a tweak for the settings badge, and i need to restore so i dont screw up my phone and i will lose all my music…

Anyways I guess you’ll be able to jailbreak your A4 devices on 5.1 too.. good luck ;)

    • http://twitter.com/Fr0sT_RC1 Matt

update once the untether jailbreak is publicly available. until then, wait it out! just a few more days….. if not one!

      • שמואל רביב

What if I want to jailbreak the untether over the tether ?
        Is it possible ?

      • http://twitter.com/Fr0sT_RC1 Matt

5.0.1 introduced the corona untether for A4 devices. if you were tethered when the untether came out, you were able to install a cydia package allowing your device to be untethered. who knows if they’ll be able to pull the same thing here. for 5.0.1, there were 2 different types of exploit. one for A5 devices, and one for A4. we’ll see what happens. the dev team/pod2g might just advise people to to a complete clean install of 5.1.1.

Yes, if you have a saved activation ticket it should work. You just can’t gain a new activation with this method.

I tried to upgrade to 5.1.1 in iTunes and it gave me an error message. It said that I could not be updated. This device isn’t eligible for the requested build.

    • Anonymous

Nevermind. Unchecked Set Hosts to Cydia on Exit in TinyUmbrella. That did the trick.

        nice

    • http://twitter.com/Fr0sT_RC1 Matt

which device? you might have to restore it from dfu mode in order to get it working. make sure you do a backup!

  • Rob Julianelle

So, if I have a 4s, jailbroken with absinthe 5.01, how would i go about jailbreaking to 5.1.1? just wait until absinthe 2.0 and just run that or do i have to remove jailbreak, upgrade via itunes to 5.1.1 and then re-jailbreak with absinthe 2.0? i think im confusing myself.

    • http://twitter.com/Fr0sT_RC1 Matt

Do a backup of your 4S thru itunes, do a restore to 5.1.1 clean, don’t restore from the backup yet. Once 5.1.1 finishes, then restore from the backup you made before (might be unnecessary, but I personally prefer this way), then run absinthe 2.0. Unless! Absinthe 2.0 is similar to v1.0 where the exploit is dropped in to a backup, then restored w/ the jailbreak inside of it. who know’s other than the dev team and pod2g @ this point?!?!?!

      • Rob Julianelle

        Thanks.
I’m still on fence as to whether to bother upgrading at all, at least until next major one.

      • http://twitter.com/Fr0sT_RC1 Matt

my main reason for updating is app support. pretty soon apple will push the minimum OS to say 5.1. I couldn’t use pages & numbers on my iPhone 4 bc i didn’t update to 5.1. Tweaked a few things here and there and got them installed. it wasn’t fun but it’s a temporary work around.

i did update my iphone 4 from 5.0.1 to 5.1 about 3 weeks ago and i used my sam activation tickets but when you use them you wont get a signal first you need to install sam and disable it, worked for me hope it helps

  • http://twitter.com/T_Landefeld Trason Landefeld

Rather new to this whole jailbreak community, so when I upgrade to 5.1.1 on my iPhone 4 I will lose everything currently on my phone that has to do with any JB apps or tweaks correct? Is there an easy way to keep everything backed up?

Also do I have to do a restore as new to 5.1.1 or can I just update through iTunes?

    • http://twitter.com/Fr0sT_RC1 Matt

backup with itunes for settings and apps, then use something like openbackup or pkgbackup from cydia to backup tweaks you’ve installed from cydia. i use pkgbackup bc it uploads the small files to dropbox. do a fresh restore to 5.1.1, restore from your previous itunes backup, run absinthe, open cydia, install openbackup or pkgbackup, then restore your tweaks.

      • http://twitter.com/T_Landefeld Trason Landefeld

Thanks man! One question what is dropbox? Does that install when you install pkgbackup?

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1507068701 Jorit Studer

haha no it’s for saving stuff on the internet like icloud..

      • http://twitter.com/Fr0sT_RC1 Matt

my previous response is still being approved by admins here. go to the dropbox website to read about it a bit. you install it on your pc, there’s also an app for it for iOS as well. basically, pkgbackup takes a list of the tweaks you have installed, saves it to the cloud (dropbox), then when you want to restore/reinstall your tweaks, you run the restore feature of pkgbackup, and it grabs the list from the cloud.

      • http://twitter.com/adampaulik Adam Paulik

From ios 5.0.1 to 5.1.1. iTunes 10.6.0.40 …. Maybe I should update itunes, but it doesnt support jailbreak. Can I reinstal back to old itunes after update? or problem i some where in different thing?

      • http://twitter.com/Fr0sT_RC1 Matt

use the most updated version of iTunes @ all times. it won’t lock you out of your device no worries. download TinyUmbrella from either the downloads section here or google it. You’ll need that to save your SHSH blobs (things that make downgrading possible). do a backup thru your updated version of itunes. make sure the box in tinyumbrella that says set hosts to cydia on exit is unchecked. close tinyumbrella, and place you iPhone 4 in DFU mode. when you do that, iTunes should automatically open, if not then open it. It’ll see your iPhone is recovery mode and you’ll have the option to restore it. From there it should restore to 5.1.1. if your iphone was previously jailbroken, which i’m guessing it was, you can tether it for now w/ the latest version of redsn0w, or just do all of this when the new version of absinthe comes out later this week.

    • Anonymous

I kept getting 3194′s when restoring with iTunes, and I found it it was because of a firewall program. It apparently means iTunes couldn’t contact the proper Apple server to approve the restore. Firewalls, changed “hosts” files, and programs like “Peerblock” can get in the way.

    Hy Jeff,

I use pkgbackup (available through Cydia). You have to pay for it, but it will save you a lot of time. You run the program and tell it to “Backup”, and it stores all the info on your packages and tweaks as a contact on your device. You do an iTunes or iCloud backup on the device, to make sure that contact gets saved.
Then when you have a newly restored device, you restore the settings from the iCloud or iTunes backup to get that contact back on the device. Once you have that, install pkgbackup from Cydia (of course you have to JB first). Then run pkgbackup, choose “Restore”, and pkgbackup uses the data from the contact to know what to install. It then proceeds to automatically install every package and tweak you had when you did “Backup”.
Apparently pkgbackup now has an option to store the data to Dropbox, instead of as a contact. I haven’t tried that yet, but it works pretty much the same.

      Hope that helps!

Hey Jeff, I have an partialy unrelated question. So whats the deal with unlocking? I’ve asked on several articles about the state of software unlocks and I’ve gotten no replys. When are you guys gonna cover this? I know I’m not the only one wondering about this. Its as if the subject has slowly been phased out and ovoided completely. Musclenerd once tweeded about this but has since gone silent on the matter, whats the deal with that? What ever happened to the new possibility of being able to flash your baseband (on newer devices)? Aside for the inevitable updates to support newer firmwares, is the development of ultrasn0w dead? Please dont leave me hanging Jeff!

    • http://twitter.com/Fr0sT_RC1 Matt

they’re mostly silent about ultrasn0w because they’re main concern is pushing out a new untethered jailbreak. other devs release ultrasn0w fixes on cydia to get upgraded users up and running. must be difficult to find baseband exploits.

Hi Jeff, is it possible for you to make a tutorial on the best way to upgrade a 5.0.1 jailbreak to 5.1.1? So how to go about updating the firmware, re jail breaking and carrying tweaks and settings over? instead of manually installing every tweak and changing the settings again? Im sure a lot of beginners will appreciate this and the more knowledgable to double check they are doing it right. Thanks in advance!

if you do an update from 5.0.1 to 5.1.1, you’ll lose your current jailbreak (obviously), as well as any tweaks associated with the device prior to updated. it’s best practice to do a fresh install of a new firmware. backup w/ either iCloud or iTunes (faster) and do a tweak list backup with pkgbackup or openbackup. i know not everyone will read this but it’s a start!

Why should I download the 5.1.1 software in the download section?
Can’t I just plug in to itunes and update over there my iphone 4 and jailbreak it the day of release?
    Just interested ;)

Just updated my 32 GB iPad 3 wifi model to 5.1.1. Its finally going to be FREE!!! Thanks to all the DEVS involved and thanks to IDB for following the jailbreak community so closely. I hardly ever get on twitter to follow the DEVS anymore because IDB usually beats me to it and I dont have to do anything because I know they are on top of it! DONATE to these devs if you can! I know I will once its released. They work hard on these Tools for FREE!

Folks, I have a short question:
My iPhone 4 is on 5.1 and jailbroken. Can I use the OTA Update and jailbreak again or will the update crash my iPhone and I have to recover with iTunes? Anybody knows? Thanks for an answer

the update will fail as you have guessed. you can either go to 5.1.1 the clean route, by doing a clean restore, restore from a backup, and then do a tethered jailbreak, or you can wait until the untether comes out and do the steps i just stated. better off waiting a few days!

Directly from the pineapple’s mouth, @MuscleNerd stated this in another thread:
The current plan for redsn0w is this (again, subject to last minute refinement…sorry!)

    * As with absinthe-1.0, there’s a way to jailbreak without DFU mode
    - This requires a full backup/restore
    - If you have a lot of media on your device, this can take a very long time and can lead to later complications
    * redsn0w will provide two paths for A4 and earlier devices
    - limera1n injection, orthogonal to amount of media you have
    - backup/restore injection, dependent on how much media you have
    * A5+ devices have no choice: it’s only backup/restore path, and time is dependent on amount of media you have

  • http://twitter.com/Fr0sT_RC1 Matt

Absinthe, A4 and A5 devices = remove your songs and videos! the jailbreak will take a while. put the media back on the device after the jailbreak is finished and your apps are back on the device.

    how to preserve baseband?

    • http://twitter.com/Fr0sT_RC1 Matt

redsn0w will have an option for a custom ipsw that preserves the baseband. it needs to be released first!

am i the only one that doesnt understand 5.1.1 vs 5.0.1?

    • http://twitter.com/Fr0sT_RC1 Matt

for some, it’s a new jailbreak opportunity. i have an iPad 3 and can’t wait for this to be available! in terms of improvements, there aren’t many in the forefront. cydia can fix all of that.

Imma have to update both my 4s and iPad 2 because i bricked my iPad 2 :( and because I broke my 4s lock button so imma update it get it fixed by apple then jailbreak imma be so happy :D

Okay so what i am understanding from this, this will not mess up my new iPhone 4S. so this will be the untethered version of it and not the tethered version of it.

      *thumbs up*

5.1.1 isn’t that major of an update so i will most likely wait and see what apple does with 6.0 then decide on what to do then
