How to jailbreak iOS 5.1.1 with RedSn0w

iOS 5.1.1 was just released, and with it come a few bug fixes. If you’re worried about maintaining your untethered jailbreak, then it’s important not to update.

If, on the other hand, you have a device that’s currently jailbreakable on iOS 5.1, you can use the latest version of RedSn0w to perform a tethered jailbreak iOS 5.1.1 with a few easy steps.

You will need your 5.1 firmware for the device that you want to jailbreak, as RedSn0w currently doesn’t recognize iOS 5.1.1. This is for A4 devices only.

Step 1: Download the latest version of RedSn0w 0.9.10b8b from our download page.

Step 2: Connect your device to your computer, place your device into DFU mode, and run RedSn0w.

Step 3: Go to Extras > Select IPSW > and point to your iOS 5.1 firmware for this device.

Step 4: Once RedSn0w successfully identifies the 5.1 firmware, head back to the main page of RedSn0w and click Jailbreak.

Step 5: Once it identifies the build, click Next where it asks you to install Cydia.

Step 6: Cydia will be installed, and your device will reboot. Upon reboot, place the device back into DFU mode.

Step 7: Perform a tethered boot via RedSn0w by going back to the Extras page and clicking Just Boot.

Step 8: Your device will reboot, and you will have a usable Cydia icon on your Home screen.

Note: This is a tethered iOS 5.1.1 jailbreak. Once RedSn0w is updated for iOS 5.1.1 you will no longer have to follow step 3.

Remember this is only for iOS 5.1 jailbreakable devices. Meaning it won’t work with the iPad 2, the iPhone 4S, or the new iPad.

      This is the tethered jailbreak with the limera1n exploit. The limera1n exploit is permanent, that’s why there are always jailbreaks for the A4, 3GS and iPod touch 3rd gen. devices. The A5 devices, however do not have this permanent jailbreak.

      The jailbreak for the ip4 is a hardware exploit. It cannot be patched. No matter what update apple pushes out ip4 can always be jail broken. Only the untethered can be patched but not the jailbreak.
      And besides the redsnow version used in tge article is the old one
      Hence they are pointing it to the 5.1 firmware….

    I have the new iPad on 5.1. Should I update this to 5.1.1. And if I do, will I be able to jailbreak it once the jailbreak comes out? Is the jailbreak that the “team” is working on for 5.1 or 5.1.1???? PLEASE HELP. I DON’T WANT TO JACK my chance of the jailbreak for my new iPad..

      Jude Palermo, I’m sorry to say, but this isn’t the jailbreak for the new IPad. This Jailbreak only works with limera1n exploit, or in other words, the IPhone 4 (and perhaps 3Gs, IPad 1 first generation, iPod touch 3:rd or 4:th edition). I recommend to download Tinyumbrella (go in to their page, they have a guide) + don’t ever update to ios 5.1.1 cause you’ll regret it! Hope this helped…

      You Need to do a tethered boot. Go to redsn0w, then extras, then just boot and follow the instructions

    Recently I had 5.0.1 Jailbreak on my Phone.. plenty of apps.

    I see the new OS 5.1.1 was available so i download and install it. Ovbiously i lose my Jailbreak

    Downlaod Latest redsnow and install ispw 5.1 manulally through Extras as directed.
    Redsnow goes through all the step but Cydia is not installed and my apps dont work.. Any help appreciated… Cheers

    I jail break new firmware 5.1.1 to get select firmware 5.1 to do jail break..that is stuck on base band.
    jail break has problem..safari won’t work, signal weak and every time turn on off turn is on must to boot tethered back again that is no good buddy that is people go to death row..

      .-. yea same here.. tired of doing all over again took me 5 hours to figured it out how I can fix the damn cydia and safari after rebooting. Redsn0w giving us hard time.. sigh*

      You may try to update ur iOS 5 w/o loosing the jailbreak & file. I’ve try update my iOS 5.1 to 5.1.1 and should work fine. All the files still there after updating.

    Help with Iphone 3GS (bought in Denmark). I have an Iphone 3GS i got from a friend who updated and bricked a previously unlocked phone. It has baseband 06.15.00 and firmware 5.1.1. I jailbreaked using Redsn0w, installed Ultrasnow fixer and then ultrasnow 1.2.5. After that “no service” so I flashed ipad baseband using Redsn0w. After that a carrier (not mine) showed up for a few seconds but then again “no service”. If i look in network selection 3 carriers pop up (not mine) and if I try to choose one it says “restrictet network”. Ideas anyone ???
