Earlier today, Apple’s new Retina display-equipped iPad went on sale around the world. Perhaps even more exciting was the fact that the Dev Team was able to jailbreak the new tablet within a matter of hours.

Now it looks like there has been another development. Well-known iDevice hacker i0n1c has just announced that he has jailbroken his third-generation iPad. Oh yeah, and it’s untethered…

I0n1c, known for his work on the iOS 4 untether, has been talking about jailbreaking the new iPad for several days now. And it appears that he has delivered on his promise, and then some.

It’s worth noting that i0n1c hasn’t participated in jailbreak-creation for quite some time now. And nobody’s really sure whether or not he’s going to share his work on the new tablet with other hackers.

But the good news is that it’s possible. As always, we’ll let you know the second we find out more details. Stay tuned.

P.S. Don’t have a new iPad to jailbreak? That’s ok, we just happen to be giving one away for free.

  • Soo whats the latest news on Kakao Talk Messenger..

He tweeted the day 5.1 was released that they were just testing to see how Apple would respond and if it would be viable to put an exploit inside an app. There was no actuall vulnerability in it.

  • didnt he say he was going to jailbreak ios 4.3.5 AFTER ios 5.0 already came out?

I don’t think he was being serious. I won’t believe it until I see a video.

      Video’s up 😛

  • Cool news, but how about an iOS 5.1 untether for the other A5 devices?

  • This is turning out to be a race. I just have a feeling i0n1c’s untether is going to be better then iphone dev’s. Theres still a few others in the race. The first to release is the winner. That way will know if it is stable.

As always with i0n1c, I’ll believe it when my new iPad 3 is jailbroken. He is infamous for teasing the jailbreak community.

  • That’s good that they are already getting Jailbreaks for the new iPad. Although, why was It difficult to jailbreak the A5 devices? Shouldn’t It be similar as the A5X? If so, there could be a possibility that their exploit may work on a A5 Chip. I could be wrong though.

    • The dev team blog says that they can still use the same backup-and-restore method they used to load Absinthe, and i0n1c presented a slideshow that said that there are still kernel exploits in 5.1 so it’ll probably be for all devices.
