Apple suing Samsung over autocorrect patent

By , Feb 11, 2012

The battle between Apple and Samsung over patents has been going on for quite a while, and it seems there are new lawsuits every week. Yesterday, PaidContent reported that Apple has once again sued Samsung in a U.S District Court in San Jose, for two patents it was granted in December, adding to the mass of lawsuits already happening between the two companies.

The first patent pertains to Apple’s famous autocorrect…

One aspect of the invention involves a method that includes: in a first area of the touch screen, displaying a current character string being input by a user with the keyboard; in a second area of the touch screen, displaying the current character string or a portion thereof and a suggested replacement for the current character string [...]

The second patent Apple is suing Samsung over is “universal interface for retrieval of information in a computer system.”

Both Samsung and Apple have lawsuits occurring right now in over 10 countries. Both companies have tried to get injunctions for each other’s products, including in both the United States and Europe.

Most recently in December, a California judge rejected Apple’s attempt to get an injunction on Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1. Apple has recently appealed the ruling.

In other recent lawsuit news, Apple also sued Motorola over Qualcomm licenses today.

The war between Samsung and Apple looks to be far from over. It’s pretty funny actually, seeing as Samsung manufactures the A5 chip for Apple’s iPhone 4S and iPad 2. It’s not clear if Samsung will be manufacturing the iPad 3′s rumored quad-core processor.

Is Apple becoming a patent troll?

The patent system needs reform. Apple and Samsung aren’t using it as it is meant to be used.

Samsung lack any true innovation and simply imitate. I think it’s a disgrace and a damn shame because their products are good but lack any originality. Steve jobs is likely turning in his grave. will the law suits ever end??

Comments like this really wind me up because you talk like Apple are all high and mighty and would never copy anything, I draw your attention to most aspects of iOS 5 which were either blatantly stolen from Android or ripped off from the devs who make tweaks for the jailbreak scene.

The iPhone itself, design wise might be original but very little inside the OS is but I suppose that doesn’t matter does it.

I was goin to say the exact same thing about iOS5.

If you look at the notification centre then it says it all apart from Samsung have pulled it off much better!

Just clarifying, Android is a freeware therefore Apple may use its codes. I’m not saying the did but just stating. Anyway Apple & Samsung can work together to build the best smartphone. Look at the iPhone 4, S and Galaxy S, S2 and S3 (come to think of it, where did the S come from? 3GS?) these phones are amazing imagine them combine (not literally) wouldn’t it be an amazing device?

Dude still debating? Just stop it already it’s not a big deal. Apple nor Samsung nor other company is going to rise or fall just because of lawsuits. Think of it as they are entertaining us so sites like IDB could write something for it’s readers

I have used both apples and Samsung auto correct feature. yes they have some similarities, but its fucking auto correct. Their are only so many ways to have it work. Oh, and apple’s auto correct does give you a list of words to choose from like Samsung does. Apple is really pushing it with the patent shit, pretty soon, all the lawsuits apple has is just going to make them look bad. I’m starting to think that apple doesn’t have enough new “innovations” to keep people buying their products. Instead of spending all this money on lawsuits, spend it on R&D to make the next best thing.

Agreed. I really don’t understand why this was Patented in the first place. How else can you make the autocorrect different from others? Honestly, Apple is taking this too far. I can understand that, they want to protect their own property, but some of the Patents are stupid.

I compare Samsung to the Kia and Hyundai of the automotive world, always stealing everyone’s ideas and completely imitating the product in the process. Look at Hyundai’s “Blue Link”, doesn’t that sound awfully similar to GM’s OnStar (which comes with a Blue button to call). The point is that I hate companies like Samsung and Hyundai. Come up with an original idea and stop copying everyone else for once

    Come on, Apple.
Autocorrect? A Lot of smartphone use something like that, like my Sony Ericsson m600i touch screen. If not touchscreen More a lot of it use like my old Nokia.
