I consider myself a strong advocate of the jailbreak cause. Ever since ziPhone – the first jailbreak ever released – came out, all my iDevices have been jailbroken and even unlocked when possible.

I love jailbreaking for two reasons. First, I jailbreak because I can. If there is a way to do things not the way they were intended to be, then count me in. Second, and more importantly, I jailbreak because it gives me access to a plethora of features that Apple hasn’t implemented yet, or will never implement for some reasons.

For the past three months, I’ve used a stock iPhone 4S. Obviously that was not my choice. There just wasn’t a jailbreak until Absinthe came out last week. But things are back to normal now.

Every time I jailbreak a new device for the first time, I try to reconsider what I really use, and what I really need. I also try to take into account a few things, like stability. If certain apps gave me headaches in the past, I’ll just make sure not to install them again (goodbye WinterBoard). It’s the perfect occasion to start on a clean slate.

This being said, I’d like to share with you all the jailbreak tweaks that are currently installed on my iPhone 4S…

This tweak was developed by Ryan Petrich, one of my favorite jailbreak tweak developers. In short, Activator allows you to create shortcuts to various features of your device using custom gestures. I currently have 3 gestures set up:

  • swipe left to right on the status bar brings up BiteSMS’s “quick compose”
  • swipe right to left on the status bar to bring up the native Twitter native “compose tweet”
  • tap and hold the status bar to launch SBSettings
  • double tap the status bar to go Home (probably my favorite gesture)

Activator is available for free from the BigBoss repo.

>> More info about Activator

BiteSMS has been my go-to messaging application for a couple years now. It is without a doubt the best replacement for the stock Messages app. I recently gave a try to Message+ but it really didn’t compete with BiteSMS. Among my favorite Bite features, you have the quick compose/reply window, and the ability to see the picture of the sender of incoming messages.

BiteSMS is available for free from the BigBoss repo, although you can pay $9.99 to remove the unobtrusive ads displayed inside the messaging app.

>> More info about BiteSMS

InfiniDock is the very first tweak I installed after jailbreaking my iPhone 4S. Developed by Chpwn, another one of my favorite jailbreak developers, InfiniDock allows you to add as many applications as you want in your dock.

Additionally, InfiniDock lets you choose how many icons you want to display in your dock. Mine is currently set to five icons.

InfiniDock is available for $0.99 from the BigBoss repo.

>> More info about InfiniDock

Also developed by Chpwn, InfiniFolders lifts the limitation on the amount of apps you can add to a folder. By default, Apple only allows you to add 12 icons per folder. With InfiniFolders, you can have an unlimited amount of apps to your folders. Simply scroll up and down to go through the apps in your folder.

InfiniFolder is available for $0.99 from the BigBoss repo.

>> More info about InfiniFolders

LockInfo allows you to customize your lock screen to get the information you need there. You have complete control over what shows where. It’s a full featured app that I highly recommend. It took me a while to get it fully set up to my liking, but I can now say it is perfect for me.

I am not big on notifications. I don’t really use LockInfo to add a bunch of stuff to my lock screen. I just use it to make notifications on the lock screen and Notification Center look better.

I’ve given a good run to IntelliScreenX, but after several days of intensive usage, I had to delete the package and use LockInfo instead. Don’t get me wrong, IntelliScreenX is a great application, but it just didn’t do it for me.

The only notifications showing on my lock screen are messages, calendar events, reminders, calls, and Yammer notification. It’s bare minimum. Just the way I like it.

LockInfo is available for $7.99 with a 14-day trial period from the ModMyi repo.

Need I introduce MyWi to anyone here?

MyWi is an app that brings tethering capabilities to your iPhone. Forget paying those extra fees to your carrier for tethering your iPhone. MyWi will do that for free, allowing you to create a wi-fi hotspot to share your iPhone data connection with other devices around you, or simply to share your internet connection with your laptop via the USB cable.

Carriers like AT&T have recently been hunting down people who use tethering apps such as MyWi, so use it at your own risks.

MyWi is available for $19.99 from the ModMyi repo. Not cheap, but well worth it.

This tweak is one of the monuments of jailbreaking; an institution for all jailbreakers alike.

SBSettings brings several settings toggles to your fingertips, such as Airplane Mode, Bluetooth, etc… A bunch of other add-ons are also available from Cydia. On top of the settings toggles, SBSettings lets you easily respring, refresh, or even power off your device. Additionally, it can display useful information such as your IP address, storage and available memory.

It usually works with an Activator gesture. As mentioned above, I chose to “tap and hold” the status bar to bring up SBSettings.

SBSettings is available for free from the BigBoss repo.

Those of you who have been following this blog for a while will already know that I absolutely love Xpandr. Simply put, Xpandr is a shortcut expander for the iPhone. Think TextExpander for iOS (the desktop version, not the watered down App Store app).

iOS 5 has brought a new feature that kind of mimics what Xpandr does, but it clearly isn’t as powerful which is why I always come back to this tweak.

Xpandr is available from the BigBoss repo for $1.99.

>> More info about Xpandr

Zephyr is yet another great tweak from Chpwn that brings iPad-like multitasking gestures to your iPhone. With the flick of a finger, Zephyr lets you easily navigate through your backgrounded apps, just like you do on your iPad when your multitasking gestures are activated.

The tweak also lets you launch the app switcher by simply swiping up from the bottom of your screen. This, coupled with my Activator gestures, and I barely use my Home button ever again.

Navigating through apps is a breeze thanks to this amazing tweak. If you’ve used Zephyr, you know it can sometimes get in your way (ie. when you’re flicking through photos in your camera roll), but I definitely put it in the “must have” category.

Zephyr is available from the BigBoss repo for $2.99.

If like me you think the new zoom feature in iOS 5 is unusable, then ZoomIsBack! is for you.

In iOS 5, you have to pinch to zoom, which is very unpractical depending on the situation you’re in. For example, when I’m holding my daughter in one arm, and holding my iPhone in the other hand, I physically can’t pinch to zoom, unless I want to drop my daughter, which of course is not an option.

ZoomIsBack! brings back the old way of bringing up the zoom in your Camera app. Simply double tap the screen and slide to zoom. It’s simple, and it just works. I really don’t know why Apple fixed something that wasn’t broken in the first place. I guess they wanted to be consistent in what pinching the screen does.

ZoomIsBack! is available for free from the BigBoss repo.

Honorable Mentions

AssistantExtensions puts Siri on steroids. We recently covered this new tweak that adds several commands to Siri. For example, you can search YouTube, turn SBSettings toggles on/off, send tweets using Siri, and more.

The great benefit of AssistantExtensions is that it allows plugins to be developed for it, which means it’s going to be greatly improved on. We’ve already seen a great plugin that allows you to use Siri to translate phrases in 30 languages. If you haven’t downloaded AssistantExtensions yet, you should definitely give it a try.

AssistantExtensions is available for free from the BigBoss repo.

>> More info about AssistantExtensions

Like the name suggests, CleanStatus is a simple tweak that allows you to clean up the status bar of your iPhone. You can hide icons, change background colors, image colors, font size, font colors and strings.

I only use CleanStatus to hide the carrier name, the battery icon and the battery percentage.

CleanStatus is available for free from the ModMyi repo.

>> More info about CleanStatus

Overflow is a fairly new jailbreak tweak that brings a coverflow-like layout to the apps that are in your dock. It works hand in hand with InfiniDock and definitely works best when you display 5 or 7 icons in the dock.

Overflow is available from the BigBoss repo for $1.99.

    Where is Springtomize 2!

    • Springtomize 2 gave me lots of trouble because it is not yet fully compatible with the iPhone 4S. I got in touch with its developer who is aware of the problems. He said he will work on fixing it up shortly.

      • I haven’t had any major issues with springtomize 2 on my 4S but I can’t seem to get a bunch of the features to work on my iPad2. I tweeted him but no response.

      • Anonymous

Yeah, my iPad 2 has many bugs running Springtomize 2

      • I have a 4S and didn’t experienced any problem with Sprintomize 2. I really love it. It’s my favorite app after Sbsettings.
But I wish the “multi-apps-in-the-dock” could be better. Maybe like infinidock or is it too much to ask?

      • iPad 2’s Version is up 🙂

      • Anonymous

Get Mr. Biga on it! 🙂

  • Dan

I thought lockinfo was not compatible with ios 5?

    • Kok Hean

The iOS 5 version is available.

      • I can’t find it

      • Pablo Lagos

I just installed and it work so fine….iPhone4

    • Jeff Budke

Lockinfo is very powerful and works seemlessly with iOS 5.0.1.
If you install, take the time to look through all of the setting options, there are a lot of them.

  • gridlock, iblacklist, notifier+ is worth a mention too….

  • Have you noticed an increase on battery drain due to using BiteSMS? I had it for a few days and had to take it off. Although my battery has been bad ever since the jailbreak. –iPhone 4S

    • No. BiteSMS doesn’t affect your battery life any more than the stock message app

    • Kok Hean

Nope. And the jailbreak does NOT mess with the battery in anyway.

    • Anonymous

I have bite and use it all the time and my battery is way better than stock. I’m getting 7-8 hrs with no music. Don’t know why it’s better arter jailbreak?

    • Anonymous

      The placebo effect.

  • Anonymous

Goodbye Winterboard, but hail SBSettings… Yeah, right. The only tweak that has ever crashed my SB in a whole year of jailbreaking.

  • do Jailbreak tweaks slow down the device sometimes?

    • Kok Hean

The tweaks that you install do that.

  • So i hate to do this in this post, don’t want to sound like every other person out there asking for help either lol (a raging jackass). Last night i installed a tweak on my freshly jail broken 4s with the 9a406 build. I went to reboot it to finish putting a tweak on to use and got stuck on the repeating apple boot screen. Did research to put into dfu mode but every time it starts to restore, I either get error 1600 or error 21. Anyone that knows what to do please enlighten me as to what needs to be done to get my phone back! I have been up literally all night and all help would be appreciated!

    • Have you tried using TinyUmbrella to kick your device out of restore mode?

      • No i have not. How do i do that?

      • and what will that do? if you could kinda walk through it step by step i would appreciate it!! only my second time jailbreaking..

      • I sent you a message on FB. Basically google tiny umbrella download either the windows or Mac version install it and then once you open tiny umbrella towards the top there will be a button that says kick out of recovery. Make sure your iPhone is plugged in

    • Use the search box on iDB. We wrote about that before.

    • That happene because you installed a tweak that wasn’t for the 4S or IOS 5. That happened to me when I barely got iOS 5 and a lot of tweaks weren’t updated yet. The only was to fix is restoring your phone. Sorry bro. Good luck and be safe with jail breaking.

      • Thanks man, yea i talked to Jake and he looked up the tweak and it hadnt been updated in a couple of years so my guess is you are right about it not being compatible with the 4s. I’m not going to stray too far from what iDB reccommends for tweaks. Good article as always Sebastien. Thanks again for all the help.

  • Please do your own video! That would be funnnnnn 🙂

  • what theme is that for the infinidock image?

    • does anyone know?

    • I can’t remember the name. This screenshot was taken a long long time ago

  • what’s the point of xpandr in ios5?

    • It’s much much MUCH better than the “shortcut” feature of iOS. Give it a try.

      • I’m intrigued Seb. How is it better than the shortcut feature in iOS 5? Sell it to me.

      • u want a shortcut for your email? set @@ and when u type it, xxx@xxx.com will be spell out for you, while the shortcut for ios 5 act as spell correction instead

      • Xpandr understands multi-line formatting. In iOS 5 Shortcuts, you can only have a straight line of text. You can’t skip lines.

  • Jon Garrett

Well, to be truthful, a stock iPhone 4S is pretty much usable. A jailbreak is just icing to a cake.

  • Nice tweaks Sebastian! But why didn’t intelliscreenx cut it for you?

    • It was too much, yet not enough customization. Like I said, I don’t need a bunch of shit on my lock screen. I just want a few selected apps to show there, and LockInfo allowed me to do that best

      • Good point. I think I just might try it

      • Anonymous

I have to disagree with you. As I was saying in my post below, with intelliscreen x you can customise what you want to see on the lock screen. Essentially intelliscreen gives you notification center on the lock screen, therefore you will have all the customisability of notification center on your lock screen, which lockinfo can’t give you.
You can always turn off the Facebook, Twitter, Mail and RSS feed pages as well should you require. Intelliscreen quick settings on your lock screen is also a massive plus point for me, but again it can be turned off.
Intelliscreen gives you more flexibility than LockInfo, but has the additional features should you require it. Lockinfo on the other hand requires you to download plugins, and as you mentioned, requires a lot more setting up.

I used to use Lockinfo exclusively, but I have definitely been converted. I think you should give intelliscreen X another go and explore it some more. I am sure you will be converted too 🙂

      • Anonymous

Though IntelliscreenX (ISX) is pretty damn good, it does lack in a few areas that LockInfo (LI) covers better. For one, LI’s mail previews are displayed almost exactly as they are in the mail app rather than being a ton of plain text (often poorly formatted) and HTML like they are with ISX (which made me NOT want to read it), which is a definite plus. An option that LI offers is font resizing for notification banners and/or text. ISX forces you to be satisfied with the default font size, even though it’s too big and annoying to scroll through. LI also plays well with playing music. It gives me the option to hide LI while playing music and whether or not to display artwork. ISX keeps its visibility set to on by default and makes the lockscreen visually unappealing since you now have to slide the ISX notification overlay up before being able to access music controls and info. I’d gladly use ISX instead of LI if they implemented these simple, yet crucial, options for users like LI always has.

      • nice trashy mouth. classly libtard

      • Kiel Wallace

Yeah this is the internet! You can’t fucking swear here!

      • Anonymous

        Classly? Right……….

      • Seb u can try to use lockin and intelliscreenx like me, lockinfo for my lockscreen and use customized NC, with intelliscreenx for my notification center only. I love it as there are pages for mails, facebook, twitter and RSS on my NC

  • springtomize 2 combined all of these:)

  • The only tweaks I downloaded and needed are
    – Zephyr $2.99 (Love the new 1.1 update, rarely use my home button now. And it is so smooth no lag at all.)
    – 3Gvenice use Facetime over 3G!!! And its FREE.
-RandomFlip I suggest this tweak, i don’t know but Jeff you should check it out and this tweak it’s just 5kb in size. (FREE)

All found on default repos in cydia. just refresh.

  • Anonymous

Why do you prefer LockInfo to IntelliscreenX? Don’t get me wrong I used to swear by LockInfo, but in iOS5 intelliscreenX is well integrated with notification center, and more feature rich too.

As it is integrated with NC, you can use native settings to choose what you want on the lock screen. Moreover Lockinfo’s info shade is not integrated in NC, which is a real pain.

  • is infinidock compatible whit springtomize2?

    • These two gave me trouble. Actually, Springtomize didn’t play nice with InfiniDock

      • Anonymous

Works fine on the iPhone 4.

    • I like springtomize2 with scrollingboard. infinidock is so “3g” lol

    • infinidock, springtomizer2 and folderenhancer works well on my ipad 2, although some of the options in springtomizer2 does not work, u can trial and error which one u like and works for you

  • What lockinfo theme is that?

  • Alex Baer

Protip: ZiPhone wasn’t the first jailbreak. The original jailbreak me with the libtiff exploit was well before it. Ziphone was however the first crappy tool, including greyed out Wifi and the ugly Z icon left over.

Zibri did at least contribute the ramdisk method. Although he also exposed plenty of holes to Apple

    • Ditto. First thing I thought off when I read this article.

    • Kok Hean

    • Yes, yes, yes. His tool crashed so many phones. I remember a plethora of people on IRC coming with their WiFi not working, Bluetooth, etc. and even people having useless phones because on top of that, ZiPhone changed their IMEI and such. That tool was a mess.

      • Mad guy

Obvious this “Sebastian” is talking out of his ass. Yes we know it is your list we are just trying to help, assbreath.

  • 1. Activator
    2. SBSettings
    3. Folder Enhancer
    4. PhotoAlbums+
    5. 3G Unrestrictor 5
    6. BiteSMS
    7. KillBackground
    8. CleanStatus
    9. Pull To Refresh
    10. iFile

  • Adam Parsons

I found Springtomize 2 caused the camera to crash on my 3GS. Anyone else have the same issue?

    • disable some of the options in springtomizer to see which one is conflicting for now

  • TP Folair

I miss Auto3G (not yet compatible w/iOS 5, maybe never?) and Auto Location (same). These two app/tweaks saved my battery’s life CONSIDERABLY. I don’t miss them enough to downgrade to iOS4 though…

    • i agree… would be great for an alternative.

    MyWi vs. PDAnet? Compare/contrast?

  • Sina

Thanks for sharing tweaks list with us Seb.

I find KBShortcuts more useful than Xpandr; It does the job the way I need it.

    — Zephyr, you know it can sometimes get in your way (ie. when you’re flicking through photos in your camera roll) —
“why dont you just exclude those apps ?”

I also use Activator, infinidocks, Overflow, Zephyr, SBSettings, FolderEnhancer, Move2Unlock, BiteSMS and … (those are main) everyday.

    • i use kbshortcut together with xpandr, and it is good with mail enhancer too.

Btw is overflow works in ipad 2?

    Assistant extension makes siri slow.

    • Hell yeah. My siri hasn’t been working properly. ie. making calls. It’s very annoying.

  • Daniel

    I like Lorem and Ipsum!

IntelliscreenX should be on the list IMHO….

  • What about display recorder and dreamboard those are also great

  • Anonymous

with infindock and InfiniFolders i didnt like the fact it didnt sync with itunes very well is that still a problem.

    • i always have problems with infinifolders, i love using infinidock with FolderEnhancer instead

  • Activator
    Custom NoNewsLabel
    Five Icon Dock
    Infinite Tweet
    Landscape Lock Rotation
    No Folder Badges
    No Page Dots
    noOTA badge
    NotificationCenter Enhancer
    Pull To Dismiss
    Unified Ipod for IOS 5
    WiFi Booster
I know that’s a little bit more than 10 but these are the tweaks that make my iPhone mine and without them I’d find many things annoying 😉

    • Nice list!

    • Springtomize 2 can accomplish a lot of these things

    • Its good to see that someone did not use Winterboard. Or am I the only one that thinks it slows down the device? ;P

  • Found a tweak that doesn’t get talked about too much. Is Tetherme worth downloading? I had Mywi for ios4 and I was wondering if Tetherme works the same way but for ios5.

    • Yes it works on ios 5 and it’s considerably cheaper than MyWi

    PDA net

  • Julian Rindler

always interesting to see what others view as essential 🙂 my top 10 SUPER ESSENTIAL tweaks would be:

    1. intelliscreenx (best. tweak. ever. why ever leave the NC?)
    2. sbsettings (replacing isx toggles for more functionality)
    3. activator (if counted as an individual tweak)
    4. 3g unrestrictor (why pay for calls when you can skype for free all the time?)
    5. adblock (makes browsing just so much more pleasant)
    6. infinifolders (one “misc” folder should really do it)
    7. netatalk/ifile (gotta access your phone somehow)
    8. callbar (removing a huge annoyance)
    9. removebg (one gesture to kill them all… and speed things up)
    10. action menu (if you have to type in your rather long email address all the time you know why)

of course among the other 30 tweaks or so i installed some are cool or fun, but none are as essential to me.

  • I can’t believe Package Backup isn’t listed

  • Kok Hean

    Goodbye WinterBoard 🙂

  • Can someone please break down the activator. I want to use it and have heard great things, but I can’t seem to figure it out. Thanks in advance.

  • Anonymous

ManualCorrect is just the best tweak ever and really belongs in this list!

  • My favorite and daily used tweaks ate Intelliscreen X and Zephyr.

Zephyr is awesome and should be the way the iPhone was always used, I love the close app feature too! The only issue I have had and don’t know of anyone else has had this, but sometimes Zephyr just stops working and I need to respring to get it working again.

Another issue is the cover flow dock effect in springtomize 2 messes up my other icons sometimes and I also need to respring to fix those. Other then that everything is brilliant, have massively missed my jailbreak!

    • Anonymous

I’m having similar issues with the most recent Zephyr too. Swiping left or right a few times (switching apps) followed by a swipe up freezes the switcher, and/or is occasionally followed by a black screen. Not finding a conflicting tweak either. Frustrating because the tweak is so close to being great!

  • hi sebastien
i just installed lockinfo and bitesms.
so my iphone is locked and if somebody sends me a sms, the bitesms window pops up. and on the lockinfo-lockscreen there also a notification that says i got textmessage. so is there a possibility that i disable the bitesms window ONLY on the lockscreen, so that i have a clear interface on the lockscreen with my lockinfo-information???

    • I don’t think you can do that ONLY on the lock screen.

    • Anonymous

      Settings->LockInfo->Lockscreen->Alert popups->Block popups 🙂

I agree with Seb on the Lockinfo v. IntelliscreenX debate. Intelliscreen throws a lot of junk into the NC, a place I want to get in and out of as quickly as possible. I have apps for all that stuff. All I need from my NC is toggles, the ability to glance at messages/mail, and the option to mark them read or delete em if no follow up is required. LockInfo does all of that. LockInfo’s real value though is in how it handles LS notifications. It is significantly more customizable and cleaner in dealing with incoming notifications. Once you dive into it’s options (which admittedly are a little cluttered), you find it is more customizable than you may have thought. Being a bit of a minimalist, it suits me better.

    • Anonymous

You can turn the ‘show auto reply on lock screen’ to off(in bite settings for quick reply). then when you get a text you wont get the auto reply window on the lock screen, but you will get the native text message alert on your lock screen. You can turn that off by going into your notifications settings for messages and turn ‘view in lock screen’ to off. hope that helps get you what you want.

  • Is anyone having problems with siri after Jb on the iphone 4s? It does everything but make calls to people in my address book. Any suggestions?

  • Dan

great article, I agree with most of the tweaks and you made me rediscover lockinfo =D

  • Anonymous

I agree 98% with the list. I would have picked PkgBackup or iFile or InfiniBoard instead of Zephyr.

  • Great list Seb! I just jail broke my iphone4s and installed most of these. Is there way to change with the weather on lockinfo? It still says Cupertino. I changed it in the weather app but it didn’t apply it to the lock screen. Thanks

    • Anonymous

Try making sure you delete the Cupertino weather report in the yahoo weather and respring. It seems that it only pulls weather from the first city listed.

      • Yup, 2008crma’s trick above should do it

    • I had to actually reboot to take effect. Respring didn’t do it

  • Anonymous

You could use ScrollingBoard alone to do what “Infinidock” and “Infinifolders” do and save you a spot on the countdown :p I’ve used all three but obviously sided with ScrollingBoard since it does it all with one tweak.

  • Anonymous

I agree with Lockinfo over intelliscreenX. However I had problems with bitesms crashing randomly on QC that I had to abandon it. Unfortunately Lockinfo doesn’t have a quick compose/reply built in so I had to go back to IntelliscreenX for now. Another fault with Lockinfo is getting it to appear in your lock screen (I emailed the author and he told me how to fix this by an activator workaround). What I like about Lockinfo is it allows you to display more weather info (by a separate add on) with your swipe down menu. Additionally you can have a quick access calendar there as well (also addon). I have payed for both and I still prefer the addons on Lockinfo. I dont know if it has gotten better because I disable RSS feeds on IntelliscreenX but it is a horrible interface. Besides I like the app “pulse” for my RSS feeds better.

  • Infinifolders would be a whole lot better with horizontal scrolling, paging and indicator dots. That would make it a lot more intuitive.
And what about zoomisback? Pinching and zooming is so much more intuitive and awesome… I really don’t get it.

  • Well then, here’s my little list! 😀 First bunch are the ones I always keep installed, second are just backups in case I need any of them, and the last ones are just a couple other purchased tweaks that I don’t use, but like to keep listed. (I still haven’t tried the Siri ones, but I’m getting a 4S on Monday. Can’t wait!)

bitesms, folder enhancer, ifile, intelliscreenx, lingual, linksafe, lockscreen multitasking, no bookmarks, no keyboard spotlight, nowlistening, pull to dismiss, siritoggles, snappy5, springclean, springtomize 2, user agent faker, zephyr.

firebreak, gridtab, homepage in safari, inetusage, light bright, lsrotator, myvolume, reset safari, safari download manager, sbrotator, sleepfx, tab+, wallpaper jpegifier, winterboard, wifianalyzer, wifibooster.

android loader, display recorder, homescreen settings, infinidock, infinifolders, live clock, lockinfo, mobile volume sound, weathericon, wraparound.

Each year I have fewer reasons to jailbreak. I still haven’t jbd my iPhone 4 since upgrading to ios 5. It’s ok, but when I finally do it, it will be for sbsettings and action menu. Of course then I’ll install lock info, 5 icon dock, ifile, openssh and a couple other things but really if apple would ship iOS with toggles and a clipboard history, I’d be totally happy.

Really, the best thing about jailbreaking is that these guys show apple how it’s done, and the best features trickle down to the stock install within a year or two.
