Having Problems With Your Jailbreak? Try These Tips

By , Jan 21, 2012

Lots of happy people have successfully jailbroken their iPhone 4S and iPad 2 over the last 24 hours or so, but some are still having problems pulling off a successful jailbreak on both Mac and Windows.

We understand the frustration that some of you have been experiencing, and we really want to help you. True, the Windows Command Line Utility isn’t exactly the easiest tool to jailbreak with, but it can be done, and has been done successfully by many of our viewers and readers.

That being said, there are still quite a few that seem to be having issues, so if that describes you, step inside, and let’s discuss some things that might help…

Make sure your device is plugged in, and iTunes recognizes it

As silly as this sounds, we’ve all been there. Unplug the device, plug it in, make sure it beeps. Open up iTunes, and make sure iTunes sees it. Make sure the latest version of iTunes is installed on your machine, especially for Windows users.

Backup your Device to iCloud or iTunes, Clean Reinstall iOS, Jailbreak, and Restore

This is probably one of the best tips that we can give you. True, it’s a bit more time consuming to have to back up your entire device, restore to a stock iOS 5.0 or 5.0.1, jailbreak, and then restore all of your data, but it makes a difference.

For one, I noticed a huge difference in the time it took to jailbreak with a fresh clean install of iOS 5.0.1 versus one with tons of apps, photos and data. This is definitely recommend, and either iCloud backup or iTunes backup will work.

Once you have backed up, restore your device to a fresh install of iOS 5.0/5.0.1, and then follow one of our jailbreak utilities. This will probably solve the majority of issues.

Disable Your Passcode

Having a passcode set can interrupt the progress of the jailbreak and cause problems. Disable this before you even start.

Reset all Settings

Go into Settings > General > Reset > and tap Reset All Settings. If you only have a few items on your device, but it’s still failing, try a reset, then reattempt the jailbreak.

Run as Adminstrator (Windows) Use Sudo (Mac)

I can tell you for a fact that the CLI utility on the Mac will fail if you don’t use sudo when running it, in fact our upcoming video will prove that. It’s also imperative that you do the same on a Windows machine. This gives the jailbreak utility the permissions needed to do its duty.

Restart your computer, restart your device, unplug and replug

These are all simple suggestions, but we’ve seen them help people many times. In fact, a few have personally told me that a reboot worked. Try this, sometimes it just works.

Run Absinthe from the terminal (Mac)

In the terminal type: sudo ./Absinthe.app/Contents/MacOS/Absinthe and make sure that the Absinthe.app is in the same directory as your terminal.

This will run Absinthe with a verbose terminal so that you can discern any errors. planetbeing recommended this, so it has to be good.

Make sure Absinthe Detects your Device (Mac)

Absinthe should detect your device upon first execution. It should say something like “iPhone 4S with iOS 5.0.1 (9A406) detected. Click button to begin.”

If you don’t see something similar to this, make sure your device is plugged in, and restart if necessary.

We will continue to compile more tips in this post as we come across more scenarios. These are some of the most popular issues with jailbreaking the iPhone 4S and iPad 2. Have you encountered anything unique? Do you have a solution to a particular issue plaguing would-be jailbreakers? Let us know in the comments below.

Can someone help me with jailbreaking the iphone 4? I have tried just about every redsn0w software but it never actually passes the “reboot” stage (when following directions, my iphone just turns on and the jailbreak doesn’t install. I have done successful jailbreak with my ipod and ipad 2′s but I dont know why my iphone doesn’t work. Thanks

The post above says a few things that could be happening to you…have you tried a restore in iTunes and tried again . ? No apps on the device…if you have done a iPod and iPad you know how to use redsnow ..

Restore your device then try again. What version of iOS are you trying to Jailbreak?

I HAVE THAT EXACT SAME PROBLEM!!! I’ve jailbroken tons of devices before, but for some reason, on this phone nothing is working! Do you have a Verizon phone by chance?

Download a custom 5.0.1 iphone 4 firmware from somewhere. In redsn0w, click extras, select ipsw, and select the firmware you downloaded. Run as usual. That should fix problem

I did JB an Iphone 4S CDMA and iPad 2 32GB WiFi only and finally an iPad 2 CDMA 3GB 64GB which took 4h and even it seems ok I have no Notification Center Functionality on that one but the other 2 Devices have it. So I think this one has an issue. Should I RE JB? or Shift Restre to Stock 5.0.1 and start all over. I did it yesterday with VMWorkstation 8 + Mac OS X 10.7.2 and iTunes 10.5.3

You just need to navigate to the directory where you downloaded the zip file, and extracted the zip.

    • Anonymous

You didn’t unzip the file to the base C: folder. It’s probably under your Home folder somewhere. Unzip again and watch where you unzip it to.

I’m noticing Cydia is being very slow to respond, guessing this is just server load, but wanted to confirm that it wasn’t just me?

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_GJ4DGPHSOFTD7LLON3FWGLIBYY Your Nightmare

It’s common that after a new jailbreak is out Cydia gets to be sluggish and slow because there are more and many more people that are trying to download tweaks and so on. But i haven’t noticed any change

  • Anonymous

I found that the best way to Jailbreak and the fastest way is to back up all you information to iTunes or iCloud then restore to iOS 5.0.1 9A405 and then Jailbreak your device. This will only take about 5 min. to jailbreak. This way you know everything was installed correctly on your device.

  • Donald Lyon

Ok, so on my iPhone, I created an iCloud backup, and then clean reinstall of ios. Set up phone as new, jailbroke, all went well there. Now, does anyone have an idea how to restore my iCloud backup onto my freshly jailbroken device? Kind of a silly question, but for the life of me I can’t figure it out lol. Thanks in advance.

    • http://twitter.com/therealjdizzle Jason Masters

actually i had the same question lol?

      • Donald Lyon

I know, I’m going to feel really silly if it’s something simple. I didn’t create a desktop iTunes backup, just the one in iCloud. Wonder if there’s a jailbreak tweak to run the initial startup assistant again and select restore from iCloud?

      • Donald Lyon

And just like that… Figured it out, after creating an iCloud backup, restore as new, jailbreak, then delete all settings, that will take you back to the initial setup screen, then restore from iCloud backup. Hope it works for you Jason

For those of you who encoutered with errors regardless of how many ways you tried to get around already.
    Heres a simple fix:
    -Restore your iphone 4s

and run all the steps that jeff wrote about again.

    Thats how i fixed mine.

    Hmm….
I tried about 8 times, but my iPhone is not jailbroken.
    At first my config:
Last Backup 06:08 AM @ iCloud
Full restore under Settings -> General -> Reset -> Erase All Content and Settings
After Reboot I choose a “new iPhone” on the setup assistant with no apple-ID
    Then I tried to jailbreak
-> connected to the pc, started CLI, installed the jailbreak profile (cinject -i payloads/jailbreak.mobileconfig)
-> the next command (cinject -j payloads)
The backup was okay, next step was (cinject -w)
After the log comes to an end i startet the vpn-connection on my iphone.
It says that there is an error in the config and the iphone restarts, BUT:
The log still stands there. Nothing has happen.
    It just stuck on “………. racoon.log[239] : * Starting kernel exploit…

and then my iphone restarts. cydia isn’t working, cause nothing has installed…. :-/

sorry for my bad english, I hope you guys can understand and maybe someone can help me….

P.S.: how can I restore my iCloud-Backup AFTER jailbreaking? had to reset the settings again?

I did jailbreak my 4S yesterday it took me couple tries but it did work
Most of my problems were the program not detecting my phone unplug and restart did it for me.

Also FYI if halfway through your jailbreak you unplugged your phone, when you plug it back in it will restore it to the original state then you can unplug it and plug it back in and start over I think this is very cool

    • jimmy almonte

If the initial,First try didnt work , then you will have to reset the phone, restart the PC/MAC and restore the phone … once all that is done then you rund program as administrator and begin the video process as demonstrated.

if your having problems try this:
download a fresh copy of absinthe. jailbreak as normal. when it says almost done, DO NOT GO INTO THE ABSINTHE APP! GO TO SETTINGS AND TURN VPN ON! It will reboot. after that you may have to wait thirty seconds depending on your device. then after it reboots again (or if doesn’t reboot this will work too) go into CYDIA! It will prepare the filesystem and you are now done!

Help! I jailbroke my iPad 2 today using Absinthe v0.4. Jailbreak went fine, until I ran Cydia for the first time. I have an iPod touch 4g (8GB) running 6.1.6. I used the P0wsixpwn tool for mac and successfully jailbroke my ipod. I had little storage left on my ipod (a few megabytes) and opened Cydia. It said it would prepare the filesystem and exit when complete. I was impatient so after 10mins i rebooted the ipod. When I unlocked it however, ALL the system apps were missing (camera, music, appstore, EVERYTHING) including Cydia. Looking at other forums it appears that Cydia deletes apps for you to make room for itself and its ‘filesystem’. I was like ‘okay, a quick FULL restore and reattempt will fix it’ as maybe then i would have more storage to let cydia finish its file system preparations. I plugged it into itunes and tried restoring it normally, in recovery mode, and even in DFU mode. It downloads the restore .ispw but then after extracting and verifying the restore, it says it cant restore the ipod as it is not eligible or something for the update (i forget the error code and error notification). I started to freak out and went into redsn0w to try and restore it that way. Apparently it didn’t support 6.1.6 so i tried 6.1.2. It went ahead, only to say it couldn’t find any ‘blobs’ and refused to restore my ipod. PLEASE HELP I REALLY NEED IT WORKING AS SOON AS POSSIBLE :(((((
