Earlier this morning, Apple seeded iOS 5.1 beta 3 to developers. At a glance, the update looked like your typical bug fix and maintenance release. But folks have already uncovered a new feature.

It’s not exactly new. iOS has long since had the ability to toggle 3G data on and off. However it has been absent in recent software releases, and now it looks like beta 3 has brought it back…

For those that aren’t familiar with the feature, the “Enable 3G” toggle used to be located in the “Networks” Setting pane. It allowed you to manually switch off (and on) your iPhone’s 3G data connection.

Although it may not seem like it, the toggle is actually a big deal for folks in areas with poor 3G service. Turning it off and using a stronger, but much slower, 2G signal makes a huge difference in battery life.

There was never any word on why Apple removed the feature, but it looks like it’s going to be making a triumphant return.

Who’s excited about the Enable 3G toggle coming back?

  • I could have used that a few months ago when the 3G on the tower was down for about 2 weeks, edge worked fine but I couldn’t switch to the edge because of no toggle.

may i use ios 5.1 on my iphone 4?

      • Anonymous

When it’s released, yes. But before then, it’s a beta, so you must be an Apple Developer and it’s not recommended to use it on your everyday iphone.

        thnx a lot guys!!!

  • Wow there I’ve been waiting for -___-‘

  • Actually i have that toggle on 5.0.1 so it may depend on your carrier

    • Emre SÜMENGEN

As far as I know, it was only missing on the new 4S…

      • Eric Morgan

        Correct. It was 4S only.

      • Anonymous

Actually it was missing in 4S AND CDMA iPhone. But CDMA iPhone uses 1xrtt as a 2G equivalent. So it could still be useful in CDMA iPhone 4. And I hope they add it to us CDMA iPhone 4 users.

  • I have iphone 4, iOS 5.0.1 no jailbreak and i have this toggle!!! May be only iPhone 4s does not have it?

    • Emre SÜMENGEN

As far as I know, it was only missing for the new 4S… I wonder if that screenshot up there is for the new 4S?

I don’t care at all. I have Auto3G and I save tons of battery life when I’m locked.

  • most important question is does it fix battery life issue!!

  • I have that toggle in mi iPhone 4 with 5.0.1.
But not in my iPhone 4s with the same iOS

  • isn’t turning cellular network off the same thing?

    • Anonymous

No, that will completely disable data from your carrier; the 3G switch will let you use the older, slower Edge (“2G”) network, which will save battery.

    • Eric Morgan

No. Then you have no network at all. Turning off 3G puts you on 2G Edge.

  • Don’t know what your talking about its always been there in my network settings & yes it makes a big def in bad 3G areas

  • Dan

  • For those of you that have this already on 5.0.1, do you have an iPhone 4 or 4S? I believe this was removed on the 4S because of Siri as it probably needs a 3G connection to operate fast and smooth. Not a %100 sure tho. But that would make sense.

No, the Verizon iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S had cellular data toggle no 3G toggle.

  • Any news if they patched the untethered jb currently running on 5.0.1?

  • SBSettings… (I know, i4S can not have it but letting users to disable 3G is not something new…)

    • Anonymous

Nobody said it was new. It was in every iOS version from the 3G to the 4. They left it out of iOS 5, but only for the 4S.

    • Kok Hean

True. There will be no need for the toggle if the 4S is jailbroken. SBSettings’ 3G toggle works on the iPad 2 too.

I hope this gets added to CDMA iPhone 4, and switches it to 1xrtt. 3G in my area sucks.

Well My Mom Says I Look Good So..

  • Well that’s just great! I was planning on jailbreaking my phone, but now I’m not sure, I might just upgrade

  • Keksz

better alerting for calendar entries would be great, for example alert me until acknowledge
    add snooze function as well

(that’s what all the phones on the market can don, except the iPhone with iOS!)

Good to hear some positive news! Until now, I’ve had to toggle cellular data OFF in places where I have WiFi access just so I could save a bit of juice. I never could see why it was even necessary for Apple to leave it out in the first place.

  • I have never stopped having this toggle on my phone. I don’t get this article.

  • sounds good..:D

  • 4s only thing. did this appear on 4s now?
