Chinese manufacturer K.O. Gadget has just revealed a cool new hack that will make the Apple logo on the back of your iPhone 4S glow, much like the logo on MacBooks. For $42, the company will send you the kit to perform the mod and claims that it can be done at home in less than five minutes.

The mod is actually pretty simple since you are only replacing the back panel of your iPhone. The back panel has a transparent Apple logo which lets light pass through it, but the trick is the “light strip” that you add to it…

The best part about the hack is that there is no added thickness to your iDevice because it uses the same glass material as Apple’s. Although this obviously voids your warranty, this is definitely something worth checking out if you like customizing your iPhone.

The install process is actually fairly simple:

  • Remove the 2 screws flanking the iPhone’s dock connector port
  • Slide open and remove the rear panel
  • Remove the 5 screws near the flash
  • Lift up the power connector of the screen
  • Position the light panel, then connect and mount it using the 3M sticker (details will be provided after purchase)
  • Replace the 5 screws near the flash
  • Slide on the included rear panel with the transparent logo (so that the light is visible through it)
  • Replace the 2 remaining screws flanking the dock connector port

These guys sure could use Jeff’s video skills, but nontheless, this is a really cool mod. What do you think?

  • Can I buy this, when I live in Norway?

    • You can but postage is expensive at $14.

  • Thomas Gehman

I hope the LED will last more than a month, unlike most things coming out of China.

Why don’t you flip your iPhone over and see where it’s made

  • Dan

pretty neat, but with my case, couldn’t be seen

Nice mod, however I’d be a bit concerned about additional battery drain if you cant’t turn the logolight off. Given the 4S already suffers from less than stellar battery performance, the last thing I would want is something new to drain it further. Having said it does look very cool.

    • The light is turned off fifteen seconds after your front panel screen has turned off. 🙂

    • i know someone that bought a kit from this company a month ago (yes IDB you are late on the punch, but this is the first time, you beat tipb 90% of the time) and she installed it on her phone, and said a week ago that she has noticed no extra battery drain, since it is just one little LED.

  • Wait a few weeks and their Chinese cousins will have a cheaper clone with “Flee Postage” for only $9.99.

    • Cmon that’s a tad bit racist isn’t it? You of all people should be sensitive to race issues am I right?

      • It’s not at all racist, it’s comical, It’s a fact the Chinese are famous for their rip offs and clones. As a Brit why should I be sensitive to any race issues?

Weren’t they charging $200 several months ago to this to iPhone 4? Pretty cool tho

  • I bought it . Im going to take my chances . Definitely somebody needs to upload a differet tutorial because the current one is garbage . Jeff, differently , makes excellent tutorials . You should make a video tutorial for this . I also noticed one thing when I was purchasing this . They only had the CDMA version option . I have an iPhone 4s gsm . Is that going to be a problem . If it is , I’m canceling my order ASAP ! or continue with my order and make some profit selling it on Craigslist = ) I’ll sell it for sure . Thanks in advanced

    Jeff make a video!!!

  • I agree. Jeff, please make a video. I ordered mine before they were pulled, but installing it is going to be an issue. A video would be a big help!
