IntelliScreenX: The Way Notification Center Should Be

By , Oct 26, 2011

Today we finally got to go hands-on with a near final beta version of IntelliScreenX — the highly anticipated jailbreak app for iOS 5′s Notification Center — and let’s just cut to the chase, it lives up to the hype, and then some.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is how Notification Center is done. IntelliScreenX makes iOS 5′s new pull down menu, a literal center of notifications.

There’s Twitter, Facebook, RSS, and email, and it’s done in such a way that you can communicate without ever leaving Notification Center; you can even do so from the Lock screen.

Check inside for a full video preview of IntelliScreenX, and you’ll see why this upcoming app is reason enough alone to jailbreak your iPhone…

True, there have been similar apps like this done in the past — LockInfo immediately comes to mind. While I am a huge admirer of LockInfo, and everything that the developer of that app has done, I could never keep it on my iPhone for very long.

With LockInfo, I simply felt it was too complicated and too cumbersome to keep as a permanent staple on my iPhone. I realize I am definitely in the minority here, and will no doubt feel the wrath of the legions of LockInfo supporters, but it’s the truth.

With IntelliScreenX, the developer has taken an already existing iOS 5 framework, and simply added on to it, simply modified it to fit their needs. For that reason, it feels less complicated, more natural, and a lot more stable than LockInfo; even at this early stage in the game.

Additionally, IntelliScreenX’s two-way communication methodology is excellent. Everything is so quick, so snappy, so spontaneous. Twitter feeds are pushed in real time, RSS feeds can be updated with a swipe; Facebook, and email work largely in the same manner.

Maybe things feel more natural to me with IntelliScreenX, because I’m used to having Notification Center as an integral part of my daily routine. I can’t really put my finger on just what it is, but it just feels right.

As you’ve no doubt gleaned from the video, IntelliScreenX is probably one of the most highly anticipated jailbreak apps for iOS 5 — arguably, ever. I’m excited to report that even at this stage, it’s living up to that hype quite nicely. What’s even more exciting, is that the potential for growth is staggering.

Once it launches on late Thursday, or early Friday, IntelliScreenX can be purchased on the ModMyi repo for $9.99. Like all Intelliborn apps, it includes a free trial to see whether you like it or not.

Are you excited for IntelliScreenX? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

The only thing that irritates me is that I can’t have it yet.

In all seriousness, it should be available late tomorrow/early Friday, and I simply can’t wait.

      +1000

    • Martin

      + A MILLION !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jesus .. give it to meeeeee !!!!!!!!!!

  • sOlefresh

This is one app iWILL most definitely be purchasing if/when the jailbreak for my 4S becomes available; thnx for another great review Jeff!

  • Brent

    Gonna be so sweet.

  • http://www.sintoniavisual.com Giuliano

    Sweet!
When is coming out? Is there any beta available? Where?

  • Aberracus

It´s gone be compatible with iPad? the notification center tweaks normally don’t work well in the iPad, they don’t fit properly and sometimes didn´t work (like SBCenter) or they are plainly twisted like OmniState.

    Thanks, IntelliscreenX looks awesome!

  • Cooper

This is nice but I really don’t see how Lockinfo is in any way complicated!

  • HyShai

This looks good. Though I think you could have left out the LockInfo bashing. That is actually LockInfo’s greatest attribute – it’s customization and I feel bad you didnt take the time to learn the settings.
As for stability, LockInfo I’d one of the most stable tweaks in cydia. (And Intelliborn has a history of their tweaks not behaving with other tweaks.)
Yes I am part of the LockInfo legion. :)

    • http://www.idownloadblog.com Jeff Benjamin

I’m not bashing lock info at all! It’s a groundbreaking tweak, and many people love it for a reason. It just wasn’t for me personally.

  • Rip Steve Jobs

    Lmaoooooo

  • http://bubba.org Bubba

So how do other notifications (such as push messages from other apps) show up? Is this customizable (I didn’t see any examples or config options in settings). I like how Lockinfo does the calendar screen on the lock screen and how they handle notifications. I guess we’ll get the demo and see.

  • MK

Once when I was travelling (3-day sales conference in Barcelona without my laptop I used for iPhone), my phone rebooted. No problem, I thought. This is normal. It wasn’t.. LockInfo caused it to go into a never-ending reboot cycle and I couldn’t stop it. Eventually rebooted in Safe Mode and removed it and then it was fine.

I hope thos doesn’t do the same.

  • http://tsardom.net Tsar

Great job on the review – nice to get such an in-depth looks. I can’t wait for this app and am particularly excited about the status bas notifications (I’ve been lost since upgrading to iOS 5 as OpenNotifier isn’t compatible). I hope they add an option to have status bar icons for more apps in future.

  • Jeff

How can airplane mode still have wifi on ?

    • mohgui

and why not? it’s just like using the iPod Touch. you can’t have 3G and Airplane mode turned on together… that’s for sure.

    • soccerkrzy

      /facepalm, ever use your phone?

If you put it in airplane mode, everything shuts off, but you can re-enable bluetooth & wi-fi.

  • jose antonio

    hahahahaha!! made my day! hahaha!

  • Whammy!

I totally agree about LockInfo being so complicated. The good news is, at least you could make it do what you wanted, whereas IntelliScreen was implemented wrong in a couple of areas.

My biggest gripe was that Intelliscreen disabled the use of iPod controls on the lock screen. LockInfo was the only lock screen app that maintained use of its functionality.

Beyond that, way too much work was put into turning the lock screen into a phone. Swipe Intelliscreen left and you’ve got Twitter crap, quick SMS stuff, RSS feeds and other useless garbage.

Guess what geniuses? You swipe right to get out of the lock screen and get to ALL of your apps.

    • http://www.idownloadblog.com Jeff Benjamin

All you need to do with IntelliScreenX is double press home, and the iPod controls appear, while IntelliScreenX fades out of view. Double press again, and IntelliScreenX fades back in.

      • Whammy!

Roger that, I can tell IntelliScreenX will support that, just saying that previously, LockInfo was the only way to go. Excellent overview sir.

Also worth mentioning, is that IntelliScreenX appears to have the ability to “always” show the notification center on the lock screen – at least I’m assuming that’s what “Show on Startup” accomplishes. This feature is the single greatest omission by Apple. Lock screen notifications disappear when you unlock, and are only available from the pull down thereafter.

Additionally, a question: will IntelliScreenX support displaying ALL calendar events (as opposed to just calendar alerts)? I’m hoping it fixes another huge omission by Apple.

      • afoerster

        …in LockInfo as well ;)

  • Jas God

oh my God……….. Jeff, please… please can you give me a guesstimate on when it’s goin to be released..

    • Jas God

Nevermind! Didn’t notice the last sentence.. was still in awe of the vid lol.

  • Wally Morris

Great, but since I have iPhone 4s, I can’t use it yet. When will we have a jailbreak for iPhone4s?

  • robotor

Wow! Awesome job! now if they can get a jailbreak for the iPhone 4S I’ll be laughing..

  • Sunil

That is some humor man! Lol, I purchased the app when I first came to knew about it. Jeff should have mentioned about the price – $7.99 for the existing Intelliscreen users and if the purchase was made within last 30 days of the release, it is a free upgrade.

I can’t wait for this to come out either.

    • Ron brock

So what you are saying is to buy intelliscreen now for 7.99 and then upgrade free saving us a couple of bucks??

    • Sunil

      @Ron Brock

If you purchased Intelliscreen in the last 30 days of the release of IntelliscreenX, It will be a free upgrade however if your purchase is older than 30 days at the time of release, you will have to shell out $7.99

  • Henrique Neto

Will it work on the iPad???

    • Sunil

Not for the first release but developers do have plan to support iPad in future releases.

  • http://wpleet.com/ Wordpress Elite

    OMG i will buy this!

  • http://www.newageofpolitics.com Bass

Well, there’s my reason to jailbreak early. Was holding out for the untethered, but to hell with it, I’m getting this.

  • Joe

All we need now is untethered JB an we will b all good

    • Avionixoid

Now we just need to wait for proper FULL UNTETHER JB not those semi, mini, funny JBs

  • Binary-Stalker

Anyone else having a crappy battery on iOS 5, jailbroken with latest redsn0w?

Could be my tweaks, as staying in Safe Mode improves my battery.

  • Josh

God, iOS 5 is just out for a week or two and you already are disscussing “how Notification Center SHOULD BE”? God, be thankful for once. I appreciate the work made by the jailbreak community, but I also appreciate Apple’s work, and I think we should give it some time, so it can be improved. Stop complaining and enjoy stuff, without the need to change it.

    • Whammy!

No offense chief, but if you’ve followed iOS and Jailbreaking you’d understand this relationship better. You owe Multitasking, Wallpaper, and the new Notification Center (among others) to the Jailbreak community for being unsatisfied with what Apple’s done.

Pop quiz hot shot: who did Apple hire to implement the Notification center? A Jailbreak dev who’d done an infinitely better job. Then they Applefied it by half-adding it.

    • Whammy!

      Spoken like a true fanboy.

Yes, I have followed Apple and iOS since 2008. I do know the relationship between Apple and the jailbreak community, and I am aware of Peter Hajas’ “buyout”, as some would call it. All I’m saying is that iOS 5 doesn’t really NEED to be THAT improved. As simple as that, didn’t need to write a book about it.

  • Woody dog

All this work for nothing if no 4s jailbreak. And it’s tethered on the 4. I wish I still had my 3GS. The 4s sucks with no jailbreak

  • Woody dog

I’m sorry all the talk from chronic about 5 jailbreaks and I’ve had the 4s for two weeks and no talk from anyone sucks. The gf is even bitching when can I get bite you know how to hook my phone up. And I got nothing. I should have kept the 3GS unthreaded on iOS5. I hate no jailbreak

  • Tyler

A giveaway would be pretty cool here *wink wink*

  • Tal

There is no doubt i will jailbreak this is awesome! this the best thing come from cydia ever!

  • TalMi

  • iPhase4G

Can you reply to SMS directly from the notification center? And/or Facebook and twitter?

  • jo-macral

Once the 4S is jailbroken, this is the top app on my list to get.

  • Garrett

And how long till it gets cracked for free? Like every other tweek in cydia.

    • ourjim

The people who use a cracked version of this are the same people who wont pay for it.

  • Meh

Any news on how bbsettings & Springtomize 2 are coming along?

    • http://mikebeas.com MikeBeas

Springtomize 2 is in private beta right now. Progress is coming along. It’ll be released at some point in the future. No ETA according to the developer.

  • Gato

    Awesome review.

  • Rick

Eagerly awaiting a CRACKED version in Cydia :)

    • http://mikebeas.com MikeBeas

Hey moron, people work hard on this stuff, and for many it’s how they make their livelihood. Cracking apps is stealing money from the developers. You’re an idiot. Where do you work? How would you like if someone just came in, took all the work you had done, destroyed it and your boss decided not to pay you because of it? Idiots like you give jailbreaking a bad name.

      • PPDeluXe

        seconded

      • the great pretender

so are you telling me that you bought all your mp3?

      • Josh

I’m sure you’re no saint either, dumbass. Stick your morality up your ass and learn how to treat people. Pathetic.

  • wilson

can’t wait for it in the repo, and make my purchase! please come soon!

  • Jas God

    any word on springtomize 2?

    • http://mikebeas.com MikeBeas

Yep, it’s in private beta right now. Progress is coming along. It’ll be released at some point in the future. No ETA according to the developer.

      • Jas God

hey thanx for the info bruh, hope it drops sooner rather than later!

  • mopo

    • Brent

Quite simple. Don’t use it then.

  • John

What I don’t understand is why don’t apple think of that.
New advert for apple. “jailbreaking, this is goin to change everyone again”

Well, with another 10 dollars in my pocket i will definitely getting this one. I believe it’s the most promising (and obviously the most genuine looking) jailbreak app out there.

  • http://www.idownloadblog.com Lee

    Its oso SEXY

  • jp

Does it run on Mobile Substrate, or its own backend again?

  • Dan

I don’t think I will buy any tweaks before we have an untethered jailbreak

  • Richard

    This is realy great!

  • http://www.k-nny.nl Kenny

So @Ron Brock may be right?
    Hahahaha… Well even it’s for 2 dollars, i won’t try it out!
    Go ahead Ron!

  • Peace2all

    Stop teasing!!!! RELEASE IT NOW!

  • mwpit52

I currently use Intelliscreen and prefer over LockInfo. Definitely will shell out $7.99 for this upgrade as soon as tethered JB is available. Great Job!

  • usersean

So… Is there an option to enable certain widgets in the notification centre but not not show them on the lock screen? I don’t want all my shit being accessible from lock screen : /
