Pro Tip: How to Delete Photos from Photo Stream

By , Oct 14, 2011

One of my favorite features of iCloud has to be Photo Stream. My previous methods of wirelessly sharing photos between my iDevices and my computer involved emailing or using DropBox. Photo Stream eliminates all the extra work.

Much like the other components of iCloud, the automatic photo syncing service works great. But what do you do if you want to delete the photos from the Photo Stream? Don’t worry, iDB has you covered. Hit the jump for our step by step guide…

By default, Apple will delete your photos from Photo Stream after 30 days. It will also start removing them once you’ve hit 1000 images. But what do you do if you want to delete some “private” photos from your Photo Stream manually?

Step 1: Login to iCloud.com. You should just be able to use your Apple ID and password.

Step 2: Once you’ve logged in, tap on your name in the top right hand corner of the screen (to the left of where it says Sign Out).

Step 3: You should now be looking at your profile. Click the button labeled Advanced.

Step 4: If you’re sure you want all of your photos deleted, click Reset Photo Stream (this doesn’t delete photos in your camera roll).

Hopefully at some point we’ll see an option to delete photos individually from the cloud, but for now, this will work.

Any questions?

I wish we could see our photo stream on the web like Gallery on mobile me. Is there any way to do this? So for instance I’m on vacation and I’m taking photos with my phone and I want someone to follow my stream they could. T___T

    • Bridget

I wish the server would work so I could delete any/all of my photo’s via photostream. Server hasn’t been working all day. What’s up with the server?

  • Neluttu

Man, I read this blog on regular basis.

I already knew how to delete ALL the photos from the Photostream, but your article said: HOW TO DELETE PHOTOS FROM PHOTOSTREAM. (do I have to dissect the meaning?)

If you want me here just for your sake and pageviews… well there are plenty of other blogs.
    Stop missleading people.

    • Coach

Shut up. NO ONE care what you think. Start your own blog if you think you’re better.

      • Garo

        I do.

      • Ian Was Here

There’s only one ‘s’ in misleading.

        Sheesh.

    • Steve

      Neluttu, are are a clown!!

  • KiKO4LiFE

    Same here v,v

    Please change the blog title

  • Darrin

I’d say they didn’t mislead anyone. You simply assumed it was for individual photos out of a group. And we know what they say about assuming!

    • r0cket1000

“You’ll just make an ASS out of U and ME” right? lol nice

      • Darrin

        Lol right!

  • http://www.idownloadblog.com Sebastien

Why is that misleading? The title doesn’t claim to teach you how to delete individual photos from Photo Stream. It’s pretty clear what it does.

    • Darrin

      +1

    • 4JB

Why not put the work “All” in the title then? Like, “Pro Tip: How to Delete ALL Photos from Photo Stream” for example…

Whether or not you believe it to be misleading it appears to be to some degree.

  • Packetfahrer

    not works!

Your photo stream could not be reset because of a server failure. Own fault since the start. Since I’ve been using icloud

  • Arskka

You can also delete the photographs turning off the option photo stream from the iPhone in settings photo app

    • Sam

THANK YOU! Now that was an easier way of resolving the problem. I think perhaps your answer should be at the top of this page!

    • Majula

THANK YOU , that was the most useful thing I have read on this page!

    • Lady Butterfly

This is the best advice of the day. This is the best way to do it because the “Reset Photo Stream” option will not work due to “failure to connect to server”!!! Thanks a whole lot!

  • Tigo30

Once you have your Photoshop streamed (sync) how do You copy them to the device so they won’t be deleted by apple?

  • Karen Diggs

I cant seen to get the phone from my Iphone 3G to sync over to my new 4S? how can I do it???

  • http://lame.lame.com lame

Lame Lame Lame, please fix title.

  • iynque

Oh good god… You got here via Google and now…. you’ll have to hit the BACK BUTTON!!!

Why is everyone so bent out of shape? It’s not like clearing the photo stream deletes the photos.

  • Paul

There’s some utter pricks commenting on here. Probably because they’ve sent pictures on their button mushrooms to someone they shouldn’t have done and now they want to remove the evidence without getting rid of the rest of the stuff on their stream.

  • Paul

On your iOS device, you can remove photos from the photo stream view by turning off photo stream and then back on again if you want. Settings > iCloud > photo stream off.

  • Tim

Some utter “Cows” would have been more appropriate… lol

  • Terry

Keeps telling me there was server failure. I have tried turning things off & on, tried complete restore, The photos are still on icloud. I cannot sync anything with icloud until I get the photos that are there – deleted. Until that happens, im stuck with the same photos on every device.

  • Will

Go to iCloud on base computer and delete images from photostream. All devices associated will update as soon as wifi is present. Problem solved.

    • Terry

I have done that. I have NO photos on my base computer… Because my backup is on icloud, I think its got the photos stored there too. I guess I have to wait for icloud to fix the issue.

  • JanJK

I wished we could delete our photos individual.
And not like: “All or nothing!” … -.-‘

Sorry for my bad english… hope you understand me :D

I hope to see more features for photo stream in the near future, its really useful

  • Moni

To delete them from your phone you go to settings ->photos->turn photo stream off-> delete photos-> and then poof they are gone!!

  • Steve

    Neluttu you are an idiot!!

  • Loloshk

    2. Navigate to SETTINGS > ICLOUD > PHOTO STREAM
    3. Turn OFF Photo Stream

to delete pics off ur phone. go to settings, icloud, storage and backup (at the bottom).turn i could back up off after u turn phote stream off.exit . go into where ur pics are the file for photo stream should be gone. then go back in the same way and turn it back on ….. they will not reappear.. at least they didnt for me ..or u can keep it off….ur choice …..

This is the only way to do it, as krinehar says. Go to ‘Settings’,’ iCloud’ , ‘storage and back up’. Turn iCloud back up off and confirm. Still In Settings, go to Photos, and turn photo stream off. Come out of settings , go to photos. No photo stream available (because you have switched it off.) then go back into ‘Settings’ and in Photos, switch photo stream back on. Come out again, go into Photos and have a look now at your photo stream, there should be nothing there. Now it’s is up to you if you switch iCloud back up on again.

      you are a genius thanks

  • Christopher Smith

Turn off photostream in settings and it will delete all the pics

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lesley-Coull/729642933 Lesley Coull

No it doesn’t delete them. They reappear as soon as you (or someone else!) turn photo stream back on again. They do automatically delete from photo stream after thirty days, but if you want to get rid of them before that you have to follow the steps outlined above by kribihar or myself.
