Samsung and Google were supposed to take the stage next week at the CTIA convention in San Diego to announce the first phone based on Android’s Ice Cream Sandwich OS, but the two companies canceled at the last minute.

It was originally unclear as to why the companies canceled, but it turns out that they did so out of respect for Steve Jobs…

In a statement to All Things D, Samsung said:

“Samsung and Google have decided to postpone the Samsung Mobile Unpacked event during the CTIA in San Diego, previously scheduled for Oct. 11. Under the current circumstances, both parties have agreed that this is not the appropriate time for the announcement of a new product.”

It’s great to see that even though it’s a very competitive industry where Apple and Samsung are fighting multiple legal battles, Samsung still had the decency not to unveil its new handset so soon.

Classy move, Samsung!

  • +1 To Samsung!

  • Painman

I’m disappointed, I was looking forward to see what the Prime had in store for us.

But, mucho kudos for the decision

    +1 to Samsung!

  • +1 for Samsung here too!

  • Ttuk

Don’t believe that for a second. More like they having issues with the product and this is an easy way out for them and good PR. It’s very sad about Steve Jobs but I don’t for one second believe that a company like sanding or google would pull such a key event for this reason. Rubbish !!

    • Imy0UrdaDDy

No problems with Samsung Products, they been in legal battles with Apple for a while now and losing I might add. Samsung helps make the A5 in the iPad2 & iPhone 4S. They just using this to try to make good Apple, so Apple can stop the hurt it’s putting on Samung back. So it’s was best they cancel, to avoid more heat. All these patent court cases and getting out of hand.

      • Dusean

I don’t think they have problem with their product, put this is a PR move, they taken the notice of how ppl respect them and acknowledge him of being the father of this. They don’t want to seem too competive during this time , as they would think it’ll draw customers away and not towards their product, FAIL. still have my iPhone 4S on the way

  • Bob-o

This is funny…3 “+1 Samsungs” in the posts, but the +1 button reads zero. Cracks me up.

    • Painman

I would NEVER +1 a Seb post, he is the ultimate Fanboi. Does that crack you up too?

      • Dusean

Wouldn’t it make you feel better to be on a droid site instead of a iblog , I mean, chances are , you going to run into fanboys on a iblog,simple.#1+1=2

  • Primo Sindone

I’m really looking forward to the Samsung/Google Nexus Prime, as it will definitely destroy iPhone 4S, although, being an Apple fanboy, I do hope the iPhone 5 comes out soon and kills all Android devices. Sucks big-time that the event was postponed, but certainly a nice move.

  • thats sounds fishy, A competitor not taking advantage of what could be seen as a moment of weakness in their PRIME competitor’s product release (iPhone 4S vs iPhone 5) just because of the death of the competitor’s former CEO…I don’t buy it. Google and Samsung have shown no respect for Apple in the past, ripping off their ideas and such, so I don’t see them suddenly respecting Apple because Steve Jobs died…

More likely, someone dropped their prototype and they have to have time to rebuild a new one…

    • iGirl_in_SC

      +1

      I totally agree!

  • iGirl

Oh please! They know that a new product lunch at this time will go largely unnoticed. Let’s face it, Steve death’s added like someone said more “mystique” to the iPhone. Is not out of respect that they are delayig this launch, specially when Samsung and Apple have been battling on legal grounds for patents infringements. Also, would the Siri feature have anything to do with this? Just to think about.

  • Ian

Phony! If anyone would delay a product launch in deference to Jobs, it’s APPLE! This is just fluff spin on a last minute show-stopper bug or, more likely, not wanting to get lost in the shuffle under the 4S launch hype.

    • Tbv

More likely, they wanted to wait until all the fan fare about the iPhone 4S dies down before showing their new phone. Apple news would steal their thunder. It is a good decision on Samsung’s part. Wait 1 or 2 weeks, then show the new phone. By then all the iPhone news would have died down.

  • goofygreek

There doing this because they most likely found something wrong with the phone. Or Samsung and Google are just loving the PR they will get from this, and then the announcement will most likely be even bigger and have a better turn out. Either way, good move Samsung/Google.

  • Mark

No one thinks this gives them time to borrow a few features from iphone 4s and os5?

    • Sir Rufio

      dual core processor – check
8mp camera with full hd – check
      Siri = Vlingo – check
Pull down toggle menu – check

      its called the Galaxy S2…

Anyways Samsung & Google are showing RESPECT to a pioneer of the modern world. Does everyone forget that Apple was almost dead before Steve reunited with the company. Kudos to the companies for showing RESPECT in the darker hours.

SIDE NOTE: People theses days are fools when it comes to new tech. It’s not always about the hardware. This generation tech is won by software NOT HARDWARE. Example of weaker systems beating stronger systems. Game Boy over every mobile device ( not iDevces ) PS2 over Xbox, Xbox 360 over PS3, iDevices over Android, Mac over PC ( on Popularity NOT HARDWARE or SOFTWARE ) PC is cheaper and get with software free. People need to smarted up, before they talk. I’m a PC & I have currently own the iPhone 4.

    • u have currerntly own the iphone 4 and people need to smarted up before they talk huh? yahh i feel you…

Hardware does make a difference though. Like how smooth the OS runs. I wouldn’t be surprised if Sony or Microsoft would be releasing new game systems. Because I’ve noticed they are starting to become really slow

      • Imy0UrdaDDy

PC Graphics is how 10 times more powerful than Xbox 360 & PS3. Yet console have way more software and the games are selling like hot cakes. PC games are ( some games ) are just being rip. Software wins all the time, good hardware is great but only when there software to back it up. Read up why most Developers don’t make money on an Android device and yet one guy is now a Millionaire for making Angry Birds selling it at .99 cents. Also look at Minecraft on pc. All done with software, these games don’t look like Gears of War or Crysis 1 or 2. Google it……

  • iGirl_in_SC

Oh please! It would be naïve to think that Google and Samsung are delaying a potential “iPhone killer” launch out of respect for Steve Jobs. This is business, people! They know that a new product lunch at this time will go largely unnoticed with all the media focused on reactions to Steve Jobs’ passing. Let’s face it, Steve death’s added, as someone already pointed out, more “mystique” to the Apple products, at least for the short and mid-term. Now with the iPhone 4S being called by some 4S = 4Steve, is not hard to imagine that even curious ones will want to get a hold on the last iPhone Steve Jobs had to do with 100%. I don’t buy that it is out of respect that they are delayig this launch, specially when Samsung and Apple have been battling tooth and nail on legal grounds for patents infringements. I would also add to the mix the Siri feature. From now on smartphones that don’t offer a voice recognition assistant would be looked at as “dumbphones”. Just think about it.

  • Jorge

I am more inclined to think Steve s death is just a mere pretext, but hpefully they have their phone out asap

  • Revvxz

I think ill call bullshit on this.
