Apple May Release a Cheaper iPad This Year

More rumors are circulating today that Apple is getting ready to launch a new, cheaper iPad later this year, with three new hardware partners joining the manufacturing chain.

The ever sometimes reliable DigiTimes believes that the three new partners have been brought on board to help drop the manufacturing costs of the next iPad, with Apple aiming to compete with a lower price point than its current model....

BBC Begins iPlayer International Roll Out

The eagerly anticipated worldwide release of the BBC's iPlayer iPad app has arrived, but if you're outside a selection of 11 countries, you'll have to wait a little longer.

The app, which will need an accompanying subscription, is currently available in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Ireland, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland, with the United States being added later in the year.

As with so many things, licensing is being blamed for the delay in bringing Dr Who and co. to the States...

Apple is Number One Smartphone Manufacturer in US

A new report from Nielsen says that Apple is the number one smartphone vendor in the US, while Android remains the most popular mobile operating system. This research follows Apple's last earnings call, in which it was announced that 20 million iPhones were sold in the last business quarter.

Following Apple's dominance in the US is, surprisingly, Motorola. Samsung actually placed third, with both Motorola and Samsung owning a huge percentage of the Android market. Essentially, Apple moves more hardware while Android gets installed on more handsets.

How to Change Your App Badge Numbers Into Roman Numerals

RomanBadge, a recently released tweak on Cydia's Big Boss repo, allows you to add some old school flavor to your iPhone's Home screen.

Though it's highly unlikely you've been searching for a way to change your app badge numbers into those of the first century superpower variety, it is an interesting alternative to the norm.

While admittedly, this tweak won't appeal to everyone, the following video might be enough to convince you to give it a shot...

Alleged iPhone “Lite” Leaked Online, And It’s Jailbroken

Take this one with a huge grain of salt, but TechCrunch is reporting that it's received leaked shots of a "light version of the iPhone 4." These pictures of what looks very much like a jailbroken iPhone 4 come from Tinhte, and TechCrunch makes the point that Tinhte got a white iPhone 4 prototype right with a leaked video back in April.

This iPhone 4 prototype is made of a cheaper build quality, and it matches up pretty well with a couple iPhone 5 case leaks that we reported on yesterday. However, the device doesn't seem to be any smaller than the current iPhone 4...

Notefile is the Perfect Minimalist App For Taking Notes on All Your Devices

It's a rare occurrence when a really good app with cloud sync comes out for the iPhone, iPad and Mac. Notefile, by Junecloud, is lightweight notebook that syncs your notes between your iPhone, iPad, and even your Mac.

The great thing about Notefile is that it's super minimal— there are literally no settings to customize. All you have to do is login with a free Junecloud ID to start syncing your notes across your devices. It just works!

Introducing the iPhone 4 Personal Cooling Device

Apple is no stranger to finding fakes of its products being sold around the globe. Hell, there's even been entire Apple stores cloned.

Thankfully, the latest iPhone look-a-like isn't actually trying to be an iPhone at all, but we're fairly sure you couldn't guess what it actually is, at least from the front. This overly-thick iPhone-wannabe is actually a personal cooling device, or fan to you and me...

iPhone 5 Launch in Second Week of September, iPad 3 to Follow Shortly After

According to China Times, the iPhone 5 is set to be released in the second week of September with an opening order of 4 million units. This speculation lines up with current predictions.

According to suppliers, 400,000 trial units are currently being prepared. The news report goes on to say that the next generation iPad may be delayed until Thanksgiving due to component shortages...

NASA Launches iPad App For Earth Exploration

Instead of looking to the stars, NASA has decided to shift its gaze back towards earth. Visualization Explorer is a new, free iPad app from NASA that lets you see what's going on in the world we live in.

The app reveals some of the actual science behind what NASA does on a daily basis, and new videos, photos and interactive walkthroughs will be added weekly about topics like climate change, global vegetation, and even space exploration.

Samsung Ups the Ante with the Galaxy S II

While Apple's smartphone line consists of only one model, the iPhone, Google's Android products are harder to keep track of. It seems like every week a new Android phone is launched by a different company with a catchy name and a set of "killer" specs.

With so many models touting top features, it's been difficult to name a front runner to match head to head with the iPhone— that is, until now. DroidMatters is reporting that Samsung's new Galaxy S II has reached the 5 million sales mark, and it hasn't even launched in the U.S. or China yet...

Purported iPhone 5 Case Leaked

Yesterday, we showed you some renderings of a purported iPhone 5 case, leaked by a Chinese accessory manufacturer. Today, we don't just have drawings- we have an actual product.

9to5Mac just published photos of what they believe to be an actual iPhone 5 case. The accessory matches previous reports that Apple's next smartphone will sport a thinner design, with a curved back and a larger display...
