Mobile is Dead, Long Live iCloud!

MobileMe is dead and iCloud is the new king of the syncing and online storage lands, but what happens to your old MobileMe account? According to Apple, “if you had an active MobileMe account, your service has been automatically extended through June 30, 2012, at no additional charge. After this, the MobileMe service will no longer be available.”

What will happen to the content I have on MobileMe?
Apple has announced a new service called iCloud which will be available this fall and free for iOS 5 and OS X Lion users. When you sign up for iCloud, you’ll be able to keep your or email address and move your MobileMe mail, contacts, calendars, and bookmarks to the new service.

When iCloud becomes available this fall, more details and instructions will be provided on how to make the move.

So basically, you need to sign up for iCloud and you MobileMe account will be migrated to this new account. You will not lose any data in the process.

For the fellas who had iOS 5 installed, could you answer one question that I had? I shared the same Apple ID with my girlfriend’s iPhone since iOS 2.x. While it makes sense to do that for AppStore to avoid paying for the same app twice, it makes no sense to set up the iCloud on two iPhone with the same apple ID, after all, I don’t wanna see Someone else’s docs shows up on my phone. So my question is, in iOS 5, is it possible to setup iCloud with 1 apple ID, and sign into AppStore with another one?

      • Christian

William, you can legally share apps and have 2 Apple IDs. This can be accomplished by turning on Home Sharing in iTunes. That allows you to use the Apps from your respective other and yet you can set up email and calendar synching with your own Apple ID. That’s the best of both worlds. Apple allows you to have several accounts linked to each other (up to 5 if I’m not mistaken). Works smoothly. Let’s say you want to update the app that your girlfriend bought, you just have to know the password associated to her account and vice versa. Hope that helps.

thanks alot, Christian, never use Home sharing before, but this sounds like the perfect solution for me. Lemme give it a try. thanks again.

I have a mobileMe paid subscription that was set to renew in September. I got a notice last night from the MobilMe team to apply for a refund. I did and should get it in a few weeks.

    • William

My MobileMe was renewed on March, I got the MobileMe team too last night. But not asking me for a refund, instead, I was told the my subscription is extended until June next year.
Not sure if I can cancel my MobileMe for a partial refund lol
