Jailbreak Killer: iOS 5 May Have Killed i0n1c’s Untether

By , Jun 7, 2011

Earlier today we shared the excellent news with you that the first beta version of iOS 5 had already been jailbroken by MuscleNerd. This tethered jailbreak uses the same LimeRa1n exploit that has been used from iOS 4 to 4.3.3.

However, because it is a tethered jailbreak, the community was hoping that i0n1c’s untether might still work with iOS 5, but unfortunately, it doesn’t look like it…

In a tweet sent a few hours ago, i0n1c said:

R.I.P. – I just heard Apple killed the ndrv_setspec() integeroverflow and his friends in iOS 5.0b1 – if this is true the untether is dead

If that’s the case, iOS 5 might still be jailbreakable but unless someone comes up with a new untether, this jailbreak will be tethered. Because the LimeRa1n exploit is a bootrom exploit, it can’t be patched with a software update, but an iPhone 5 or iPod Touch 5G would probably fix that with hardware.

Fingers crossed.

I’m sure an untether will follow shortly. Still waiting on a jailbreak for iPad 2!

I’m no expert, but I think you will see the same problem with the iPhone 5 that jailbreakers are experiencing with iPad 2. Apple is gaining the upper hand in the jailbreak battle and it sucks.

the answer to this cannot be an tethered jailbreak if we are stuck then the way we will unlock its full potential is dreaming it just like dreaming for an iphone 4 on tmobile w/ 4g i mean the jailbreak (untethered) is kind of the same cut two holes instead of one but place safe anti malicious additonal os for safety it might take a while but it will be worth it

    :’(

Oh My Lord! I’m sure they’ll overcome it by the time the official release is available. Until then, enjoying iOS 5 stock :)

This is bullshit we all know it .. Why would apple do that? .. Where will apple get there ideas from now.. Apple wouldn’t do this they need the jailbreak community to cop ideas and tweaks

I agree 100%. It’s like biting the hand that feeds u.

    • Michael

Exactly I mean look at Peter Hajas. Apple could learn alot from jailbreakers actually, some of them do amazing things… that lucky motherf****r lol.

It seems all jailbreakers are focusing on ios 5 and ipad 2 jailbreak is left in the dark. Ipad 2 jb will come after d release of iphone 5 since it would fit same processor maybe!

I need my phone to be jailbroken and untethered otherwise I’m sticking to 4.3.3 :’(
I hope they overcome these difficult times. I’m rooting for them and I wish them luck.

    • tassz

ok ios 5 may have patched it but cant a hacker cut a hole in that patch i mean ok it is pretty hard but its getting to a point where jailbreak is assasinated

  • stfudvs

there won’t be a public untethered exploit until iOS 5 is Official, at the earliest, if we are lucky

no ones burning anything on a beta

  • Noisebag

Why doesnt anybody keep the fact in mind that à new unthetered will probably take till launch of iPhone 5 or 4s whatever it wil be.
I personally still believe it wil be iPhone 5 just because Apple always has a complete new iOS firmware number that combines with the be IPhone release.
The 3G came with iOS 3.x the i4 came with iOS 4.x and the next is gonna be iOS 5.0 so probably this time it come on a iPhone 5
The def teams would be crazy of they already made it public with ipad2 release or before new iPhone will be there.
Because al the hard work finding new exploits will be wasted then when apple already had months to fix them.

    • Andrew

This is not correct. iOS 3 launched with the 3GS, not the 3G. iOS 2 launched with the 3G. So, the precedent has been set exactly opposite of what you say… they have launched an “S” version, the 3GS, with a brand new firmware number. Launching iOS 5 with a 4GS would not be not unusual based on what Apple has done in the past.

      • moi

        3GS IS Apples 3rd phone
        3G IS Apples 2nd phone
        2G IS Apples 1st phone

whats the problem with his observation? or do you just like being ‘right’?

  • Michael

Who gives a fuck about ios 5 beta, some people keep going on about it like it’s the best thing since sliced bread, the fact that it’s buggy and you can’t actually use your phone, it just effectively turns your phone into an iPod makes trying it absolutely pointless!!!

  • piss on droid

Michael your full of shit it works great here. Maybe if you used the official beta release you’d know it work just great. I presume you are using the method taught yesterday on this blog site, and if you don’t like it go and get your self an android.

    • Michael

wtf are you on about you douche !! I haven’t even used it and I won’t until it’s out officialy, i’m not a fanboy like u who sucks apples dick and for the record, what has your android comment got to do with anything, no1 mentioned ios being shit or not liking apple u retard, if u read the post properly it’s about the beta, nothing else !!

IOS 5 beta is not of great consequence here. An untethered JB would be saved for the final IOS 5. It takes alot of hard work for these guys to come out with an untetherer, to be burned on a Beta.
As for the iPad 2 JB, we will all need to wait patiently for it. I have an iPad and iPad 2 in my family, I am happy with the iPad 1 being Jailbroken at least. If there is a Bootrom exploit for the iPad 2, they will save it until after the iPhone 4S/5 is released.

If notifications work the way they’re supposed to, I may be done with jailbreaking.
I only use BiteSMS and MyWi.
Won’t need BiteSMS anymore, and I barely use MyWi anymore.
Will be a lot less headaches not having to worry about my jailbreak every time I want to upgrade my OS!

    • SoCoMagNuM

you aint lying. but same time i like the benefits of the JB. i dont jump to every iOS update cause its sometimes minor updates that add features i wont use. i only pay close to major updates…like 4.0 and now 5.0. my phone is running on 4.2.1 and thats sufficient for me. plus i also dont rush to iOS updates cause if incompatibility issues with certain JB tweaks such as ones dependent on mobile substrate

Omg.! Always There will be a another way…let’s wait for that..:)

  • Li

Looks Like geohotz needs to come out and create a jailbreak for a5 luuuuuuu
