Italian iDevice blog, iPhoneItalia, pointed to a new Cydia tweak this morning. After some handy Google Translating work, it appears that TCP optimizer is aimed at improving network throughput speeds.

This would improve performance of YouTube and other applications. Although I don’t have any beef with the way YouTube is currently running, any tweak that advertises noticeable speed improvements is worth a shot…

TCP optimizer is pretty barebones, with no home screen icon or place in the Settings app. So what exactly is this tweak supposed to do?

“This package changes some TCP parameters on boot that result in faster network throughput (for me). I suspect it will improve speeds for others as well. My main goal was reducing YouTube stutters and delays.”

The developer also states that this tweak is only meant for Wi-Fi and won’t improve 3G performance. He also warns that Apple TV owners connected via an ethernet cable should stay away.

I tried the tweak across multiple iDevices, running before and after speed tests. On the iPad, the YouTube video load time was noticeably quicker, but I didn’t see it in any of the other devices. I also didn’t notice any real difference in network speed.

TCP optimizer is a free download if you want to check it out for yourself. It’s not in the default repositories though, so you’ll have to add http://cydia.pushfix.info/ to your list of Cydia sources. Once installed, just do a Cydia search to find it quickly.

Have you tried TCP optimizer? Did you notice a difference in YouTube or other improvements?

  • i tested for 20 minutes and i didn’t see any difference….

  • Phosphorus

    Works well

  • Hakan

Is it worth to install it?

  • Dustin

Not much of a difference in load times. Although, YouTube videos buffer a bit quicker than before.

    • Hakan

But does it load the the sites faster?

  • numbnuts

apart from near instant playing of YouTube clips there is no perceptible difference in speed, although my Facebook updating seems to hang more now, coincidence or not I don’t know.

  • Does this work with Netflix and Hulu?

    • moob

don’t ask just try it and let us know ๐Ÿ™‚

  • ruk212

do you use an airport for your wireless?

  • Gorgonphone

this works well 15 to 20% speed increase on all downloading actions in all apps.. this is fantastic

  • Gary

    I don’t notice a diiference on iPhone 4 on 4.3.3…:(

  • Vincent

All i want is for Mega Jump to sync faster.

  • I’m also on 4.3.3 maybe that has something to do with it.

  • Matt

I’m using 2 of the apps from this repo and seems like they both add benefits when used together. TCP Optimizer seems to help on videos, where as Location Service Fix seems to stabilize WiFi somewhat. The 2 seem to be a great companion to one another.

  • What versions are you running? I sometimes have a location problem and I’m using 4.3.3.
