App Picks of the Week: Onavo, Ramp Champ, Footprints

Alex Heath, May 8, 2011

Every week, we select a few apps that catch our eye. These apps can be from the App Store, web apps, or jailbreak apps.

This week, we have two unique App Store apps and one particularly entertaining game. Hope you enjoy this week’s picks!

Onavo

Onavo is a new app that sounds to good to be true. It promises to compress and shrink your iPhone’s data usage. For those of us that aren’t on an unlimited data plan, Onavo sounds like a dream come true for conserving monthly data consumption.

The Telegraph,

“Mobile data doesn’t come for free,” said Rosen, co-founder and chief executive, Onavo. “At home and abroad iPhone users must put up with capped or metered data plans. Travellers are hit the hardest, with data roaming costs effectively turning most smartphones into dumb phones. Onavo gives you the confidence to use your iPhone without being held back by data costs. It’s a no brainer – it simply saves you money. We believe Onavo will become a must-have travel and utility app for any iPhone user.”

The developers behind Onavo claim that it will double or even triple data saved on your monthly plan. Once connected to the app’s cloud-based “Magical Shrinking Machine,” the app works in the background and compresses data downloaded by your iPhone. Onavo also provides monthly reports that show you how much data you’ve saved.

We’re a tad skeptical of Onavo, but it sounds like a wonderful app for travelers and those with limited data plans. The app is available for free in the App Store.

Ramp Champ

Ramp Champ, by The Iconfactory, is a beautifully-designed skee-ball arcade game that recently went free in the App Store. You get 4 different ramps to play on for free, and you can purchase more through in-app purchases.

The gameplay is fun, and Ramp Champ is the perfect time-waster to get you through the week. You are rewarded for your game scores with virtual “tickets” that harken to the arcade days of old.

There’s not a lot of complex options or a tutorial necessary to start playing Ramp Champ, and that’s what makes it so great. The app is available for free in the App Store.

Footprints

Are you tired of hearing people whine about the infamous location database issue that has plagued the iPhone for the past few weeks? Do you not care that your iPhone can track your location? Then you’ll probably love Footprints.

Footprints allows you to track your device and other devices with a live map. Ideally, Footprints is intended for a parent/child situation where the parent wants a way to keep tabs on the kids.

Footprints isn’t tied to one device at all; you can have your whole social circle stalked. The only catch is that users must approve tracking, and the app can be protected with a master password.

Footprints is a really cool idea for businesses that want to track their work phones in the field, or any similar situation. You’re probably not going to be able to stalk your ex with this app, but it could be used for many other circumstances.

Footprints is available in the App Store with a 60-day free trial. After the trial, the cost is 3 months for $0.99, 12 months for $2.99, and 24 months for $4.99.

What did you think of this week’s picks? What cool iPhone apps have you downloaded lately?

Onavo caused distortion on my iPhone I had to uninstall the profile it came with to get back to my original setting. Ex. eBay thumbnails.

  • Shaz

im trying out this onavo app.. lets see what it does.. i have 500mb plan.. soo any compression even an extra 100mb would be nice

  • Michael

do not try onava it significantly reduces your battery life. I’m talking 1% every minute also if you have hotspot on your att plan say bye bye to it…. Not at all recommended and if I were you Id read the reviews to find out just how bad it is.

  • JoBerlin

To me Onavo sounds like “Let’s harvest a lot of data about surfing habits.”. I guess it’s a lot more effective to use Firewall IP to filter out all that useless crap that is on the web. (like ads, tracking servers, the omnipresent facebook connect, … and some adfree apps without any internet functionality try to contact a server. Why?)
If you want to track your iPhone use Apple’s “Find iPhone”. Ok, it’s not the best solution for companies to track their staff but it’s good for the parent – child example.
I’ll try Ramp Champ. That sounds nice :)

  • Shaz

So far i have no problems with it.. it hasnt really drained that much of my battery life? and if it has i guess id take saving mb over a bit of battery life?

my icon’s arnt distorted.. ive had it installed all day and did the stuff with my phone i usually do. go on my email.. send txts, go on mininews to read this blog, download a free app from itunes, etc.. and it has a detailed log of all of that that i did.. which shows me that its atleast doing whatever its suppose to in the background.. and then it says its saved my 65% of this and 55% of this and 33% of that.. etc..

i donno ill keep it until i really see something wrong with it.. ill repost if i DO find the catch in this.. cuz there must be something.. right?

  • Shaz

btw.. off topic.. but the app i downloaded was myphone+.. for those of you who want to sync your facebook contact pictures/ birthdays/ etc.. on your iphone contacts app.. this is the one to install.. its awesome.. goes well with cytacts or whatever the tweek is called that shows pictures beside the contact name.

    • Ins0mnihack

Great app. Takes all the work out of setting up and syncing your contacts with Facebook. Works even better if you sync your Gmail contacts in real-time via the Exchange system.

  • mYstoX

I live on Monthly Plan of 100MB, really need a bigger plan. Lol

  • Pete

Footprints with a subscription? There’s Google Latittude for free that does the same thing.

    Hey all,
Dvir from Onavo here. Alex – thanks for the review!

Allow me to answer some of the concerns raised in the comments. If you have any other questions, you can check our support forum (http://bit.ly/mGDvhV) or email us: support@onavo.com .

Network issues and conflicts with apps:
Onavo was launched just 10 days ago, after an extensive 3 months beta phase covering >3,000 users. As any other app out there, we’re working hard to resolve issues our users report. Please refer to our support forum to report an issue or read latest updates from our product team.

    Performance/Battery:
We haven’t encountered any performance or battery issues with Onavo. In fact, because the compression is a server-side action, you can ‘kill’ the app entirely – once you launch it, your savings stats will be refreshed automatically.

    Your privacy:
We take our user’s privacy very seriously, so we store only the bare minimum necessary to support the service – all aggregated and anonymized. Only metadata (types of applications, etc…) of the traffic is stored for two purposes:
    - Showing the user his/her data usage and savings statistics
    - Generating aggregated data in order to improve the service

I believe Robert Scoble (@scobleizer) said it best: http://bit.ly/ksTtVP

Again, if you have any other questions, I’ll be happy to answer.

    Dvir.

Onavo killed my personal hotspot so effectively defeats the purpose…
Thanks I now have to restore my phone, I haven’t synced in over a week as I was on vacation, so ALL the weeks data is gone. Idiots.

    • http://www.onavo.com Dvir Reznik

      Hi Gary,

      Apologies for that.
We have a known issue with the personal hotspot and our team is working hard to resolve it.
Once you uninstall Onavo, the personal hotspot menu should re-appear.
Please see our video on how to uninstall Onavo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9YvvYuaLy8

If you’re still experiencing issues with your personal hotspot, contact me directly:
      dvir at onavo.com .

      Dvir.
