Jailbreak iPhone 4.3.3 with RedSn0w [Tutorial]

By , May 6, 2011

Just hours ago, the Dev Team released an update to their popular jailbreak tools RedSn0w and PwnageTool. Those 2 are now fully compatible with iOS 4.3.3 and can be used safely to jailbreak Apple’s latest firmware.

RedSn0w 0.9.6rc15 will jailbreak any device on iOS 4.3.3 except for the iPad 2. This tutorial will show you how to jailbreak your iPhone running iOS 4.3.3 using UltraSn0w. If you have an iPod Touch or iPad, you may follow this guide as well because the steps are identical…

RedSn0w will work with both Mac and Windows.

Step 1: Make sure your iPhone is on the latest iOS 4.3.3 software. Make sure iTunes is up to date.

Step 2: Download RedSn0w 0.9.6rc15 from our iPhone downloads section. Also download the correct iOS 4.3.3 firmware for your device. Leave those items on your desktop for convenience.

Step 3: Launch RedSn0w and browse for the firmware you downloaded in step 2.

Step 4: RedSn0w will ask you if your iPhone is a newer model. Read the explanation provided by RedSn0w and select Yes or No. Click Next to continue.

Step 5: RedSn0w will now be preparing the jailbreak data, which should take a few seconds. When it’s done, It will give you several options. Make sure to select Install Cydia. You may select other features such as Custom Boot Logo, but we will not go there in this tutorial. Click Next to continue.

Step 6: RedSn0w is now asking you to make sure your device is both off and connected to your computer. Click Next to continue.

Step 7: You will now have to get your iPhone in DFU mode. Simply follow the onscreen instructions to proceed.

Step 8: If you have successfully entered DFU mode, RedSn0w will start the jailbreak process. You should see a bunch of weird code running through your iPhone screen. It’s all good. This should take a couple minutes. When done, your iPhone will reboot.

You should now have the Cydia icon on your iPhone springboard. That’s it. The whole process shouldn’t take more than a few minutes.

Feel free to ask if you have any question. We’re here to help.

    You a file like this:

file_name.ZIP, correct? press F2 and replace ZIP for IPSW.

    • Kevin

the file name looks like this…. Iphone2,1_4.3.3_8J2_restore where would i replace the .zip at?

      • Lgl81

Just rename the file by changing the extension from ZIP to IPSW.

      • Jeff

In Win 7 go to folder options (do a start search) then View and uncheck the “hide known file extension” box. Then change the .zip to .IPSW. Good Luck

    • Randell

When I downloaded the file it shows up with 25 smaller files but no ISPW file is ther or zip file I have been working on this for several hrs and I can not figure it out. I have a new 3gs firmware 4.3.3 8j2 modem firmware 05.16.02 Could use some help, I have windows 7 and there is not to many places to go for help. My restore ISPW is named Ipod2,1_4.2.1_8C148 Please help.

How come my iphone isn’t rebooting even though I just did a jailbreak on it? Does it usually take a while in order to reboot it?

    • max

My Ipod touch 4 does the same, RedSn0w wait for the reboot and the screen of my ipod is white with weird diagonal lines moving up.

      • mac

Well, my iphone’s screen didn’t do anything, just remained black. I forgot to mention that I just bought my iPhone (unlocked) from the internet, and I accidentally updated it to 4.3.3 with iTunes. Now I believe it’s locked! I don’t know if I’ll be able to unlock it or not, any suggestions on what to do next? Anyone?

  • Barry

Is it better to update my jailbroke iphone 4 to 4.3.3 with Itunes and then (since it will not longer be jailbroke) follow the RedSn0w jailbreaking you suggest above
Or is it better to use a jailbreaking program (RedSn0w?) to try to update the phone directly without un-jailbreaking it first?

    • Lgl81

It’s better to do a clean restore to 4.3.3 with iTunes then jailbreak. But if you need to unlock, then you should pwnage tool instead of redsnow cos it keeps your baseband.

      • Barry

        Thanks a lot.

Worked like a champ. however, to make space, i decided to delete a few app store apps and I can’t. Holding down and getting to wiggle doesn’t provide the option to delete, just to move. too tired to google effectively but haven’t found anything yet.

    • Lgl81

If the apps are from app store, the cross should appear on the top left of the icon. If you don’t see it then those apps are from cydia and can only be deleted thru cydia packages.

  • mac

Whenever I try and download RedSn0w 0.6.9rc 12 into my computer, it states that the site I’m looking for is no longer available. Is there another jailbreak RedSnow 0.9.6 site to go to if I’m trying to jailbreak iPhone 3g 4.2.1? Anybody?

    • Lgl81

You can just dl the newest redsnow from the dl page on this blog.

  • liam

urm i cant find the ipsw file we i browse mydesktop to the file 4.3.3 thingy !?!?!?

    • http://www.iphonedownloadblog.com Sebastien

Make sure the file’s extension is .ipsw

      • liam

        how ?

      • liam

i mean how do u do that ?!?!?!?!

    • Lgl81

When you dl the from the dl page here, most of the time the extension is a ZIP file. Just rename the file changing the ZIP to IPSW.

      • liam

ok i think my question wasnt precise enought how do i change it to IPSW after i unzipp it ?!?!?!?! im not really good with computers sr

  • Lgl81

Oh. You don’t unzip the ZIP file. Once you dl the file, right click the file and rename. Change the .ZIP to .IPSW. You will get a prompt, just click ok an the file will become a apple firmware file.

    • liam

thats what i dont get itsthat i dont get a prompt

      • Lgl81

You sure you are just changing the extension and not the file name?

      • liam

in the propeties it stills says that its zip file it doesnt cange it to ISPW

      • Lgl81

I think you did it wrongly. In control panel, under folder options. Did you allow the the option that lets you see the file extension? Once you allow that, try redownloadin the file then change the .ZIP to .IPSW

    • liam

      i dont have that option

      • liam

        that hust might work brb

  • Lgl81

Which os are you using? Mac, XP, Vista or Windows 7?

  • liam

    wi ndows 7

  • liam

    thx dude its working now

  • liam

now the only thing id get is the serial number they ask my serial number is 829434 what week is that ?

  • Eric

I have previously jailbroken my iPhone with jailbreakme.com, and i have several apps that I downloaded from Installous that I play often. After I use Redsn0w to jailbreak the newest software, will it delete the information from these apps or will they remain?

  • Blub

Will I lose all my apps again? can I also update to 4.3.3 without losing jailbreak?

  • Sergeant HCR

    Hello

I have a iPhone 3GS with a jailbroken iOS3.1.3. Obviously I really need to upgrade the OS to 4.3.3. Is there anything I should keep in mind by upgrading from a really old iOS and then jailbraking it? will I have to reinstall all my paid apps? and redo my settings/wallpaper etc?

I don’t need to unlock it or anything.

    Thanks!

  • LowKKSS

While installing ,Cydia app does not work cos you are running out of iphone system space (1Gbyte) and it’s interrupted while Cydia is installing.

Thisis mainly due to previously jailbroken iphone before you install redsnow . Updating ios4.3.3 will get the old cydia remain in the system space and redsnow won’t move the neccessary files to make space for new Cydia 1.1 .Consequently you need to backup and perfrom a full fresh restore from itune. Then restore from your backups. All the Apps will be wiped out, so do remember to backup b4 you do a full restore.

And even if a Cydia.app icon is visible( maybe sometime white cydia), Cydia is quitting right after you launch it.(broken file link)

What should I do? SOS please…

    • Brotato

Same problem here i have no idea to fix it

  • 6ftDiva

I tried to change the zip to ipsw and it’s not working for me..that’s the only thing that is holding me up

    • Lgl81

I guess you rename the file instead of just changing the extension.

Do you see .ZIP at the end of the name of the file or you don’t see the extension?

      • 6ftdiva

Yes I did and I tried to rename it to Ipsw and it wouldnt let me

      • Lgl81

What do you mean it wouldn’t let you? It prompt you whether you really want to change and you click yes.

  • Gorali

Install the new IOS 4.3.3 and jailbrake with redsn0w_win_0.9.6rc16, but now i cant open Cydia. Cydia icon white without logo and dont open Cydia. Open and close everytime i try to open it. :(

Anyone can help me? Pls.. I tried to rejail with same guide again but nothing happens. :( Still same problem.

    • HomersDK

      #Gorali
I also have this problem now (not earlier).
The solution is to restore in iTunes (after it made a backup copy), then don’t sync yet from last backup in iTunes (close it).
Do the JB magic (I used redsn0w) and Cydia icon will be fine, install the hackulo stuff in cydia and then sync from last backup.

Yes it will copy all your music, movies, pictures and programs over to iPhone again, but take a walk and buy an icescream while it does that ;-)

  • Messi

I am unable to delete the app in the middle of installing aftet update to 4.3.3 which is able to do so during the 4.3.1.

    Any advise?
    Thanks.

  • HomersDK

I’m unable to update to 4.3.3 in iTunes.
I get an unknown error (3194) and “more info” points to a page with what I can do to try to fix, but nothing helps.
Never had any problems before updating the iOS in iTunes.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

  • HomersDK

    Sorry, forgot.
Got latest iTunes installed (Win7 64 bit) and iPhone 3GS (old model).

  • Gin

I jailbroke my iphone4 wtih redsnow running 4.3.2. After updating to 4.3.3, cydia was gone. I then tried to rejailbreak with resn0w 0.9.6rc15, but I couldn’t get in to DFU mode. I have done a few clean jailbreaking for my friends so I am certain I followed the steps right. Please help

  • Alpheus

It better to do this on Mozilla Firefox if you have windows cause it would download everything correctly without having to change everything

  • Alpheus

It worked for me all I did was download the Firmware and the Redsn0w on Firefox and everything is working!

  • HomersDK

My problem about updating to 4.3.3 in iTunes is fixed.
I found an Apple entry in the hosts file (think umbrella made it) and after deleting the entry, the update went fine and also the redsnow JB :-)
