Missing Your Cydia App After Jailbreaking iOS 4.2.1 with GreenPois0n?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few hours, you know that the long awaited GreenPois0n untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 was finally released.

Maybe it’s just me, but I always seem to run into some sort of problem with missing or broken Cydia installations after a successful jailbreak.

To fix this issue I was able to install RedSn0w 0.9.6 on top of my GreenPois0n jailbreak with no ill results. By doing this you will still retain your untethered jailbreak, while gaining the necessary Cydia icon.

Once you successfully jailbreak your iPhone with GreenPois0n using this tutorial, simply follow the instructions laid out in the video to install RedSn0w on top of your GreenPois0n installation in order to gain your missing Cydia icon.

Obviously there will be other ways to accomplish the same thing, but this was the way I was able to do so, and it was successful.

If you’re a RedSn0w user, you can probably do this in your sleep already. If you’re new to RedSn0w, you can find our tutorial for that tool here.

Both GreenPois0n and Redsn0w can be downloaded via our downloads section.

    (btw I’m a windows user so… ’till now I won’t update.. I’m disappointed :( )

    Which version of RedSn0w do you use for this? BTW, Cydia actually does show up in Loader, but the install times out.

    WIll it update baseband if you rejail with redsn0w on top of greenpois0n?

      Great question. May people have preserved their baseband using the TinyUmbrella method. So they can unlock.

      Restoring your firmware through iTunes will ALWAYS update your baseband.
      the only way to preserve your baseband is by restoring through a custom firmware made in sn0wbreeze or in pwnagetool.

      TinyUmbrella saves SHSH blobs, this means you can downgrade your firmware, but the firmware is completely independent of the baseband.

      So redsn0w on top of greenpois0n has nothing to do with baseband. your baseband is already updated if you restored through iTunes.

      You need to download your ipsw , you can get it from the downloads section on this site.. Place it in the same place where you put the GP jailbreak and then you can point it to your ipsw

    im still using 4.0.1 on my iPhone 4, so being able to upgrade to a 4.2.1 ios would be nice (there are a few tools and apps that i want that use 4.2) i do a lot of cydia dl’ing and theming so it would be annoying to keep a tethered jailbreak when i know theres an untethered jb out there… just waiting on the windows version for both my iphone 4 and ipad.

      No . Redsnow will not put a new baseband on your iphone.. It can’t unless you check the install iPad baseband .. Redsnow is a jailbreak tool not a update my iOS and baseband unless you want it to..

    Yeah, was having same problem with the loader, no Cydia option to install. Did step by step instructions from this video with the exact same files stated and get an error the second I try to boot. Makes no sense to me.

    Yes Greenpois0n is unfinished, but it is very nice to be untethered again. This trick of installing Redsn0w on top of Greenpois0n works flawlessly.

    You can’t install Cydia by using the loader.app because the greenpois0n-servers are down. Wait until they are back online or try the redsn0w-solution.

    I can’t get this to work for the life of me. I have a iPhone 3gs with the newer baseband. I upgraded to 4.2.1 with iTunes then used greenpois0n to jailbreak. But after that I can’t seem to get redsn0w to work. I’ve tried 0.9.6rc8 and 0.9.6b6 and everytime I try it doesn’t work. When you get to the screen that tells you to turn off your iPhone with it plugged in and hit next I’ve tried that. On the next screen it skips all the steps and goes straight to trying to jailbreak the phone and it doesn’t work. I’ve tried putting it in DFU mode before I hit next and then it will start to jailbreak and it says waiting to reboot and then I get a white screen on my iPhone and redsn0w says unexpected error. I’ve rebooted the phone several times and tried different usb ports (even on the keyboard) and nothing works. I made sure that I have the lastest version of iTunes and Mac OS X 10.6.6. Anyone know why this isnt working?

      This was in one of the posts from iDB’s moderators.

    i couldnt get red snow working, i put it in dfu mode and tried installing cydia, and the phone was unresponsive. not sure im using the right version, rc8 0.96, had to restore twice. any advice ? or should i just wait the the servers to be back online?

    Running Redsn0w over the top of the Greenpois0n worked great for me. Thanks for the great tip Jeff. Opening Loader over and over and over with no result was getting really taxing.

    if you keep going back into the Loader app and continue trying, it will eventually (took me 15-20 tries) work.

    the problem seems to be that the idiots at greenpois0n didnt realize they’d be SLAMMED with hits from MILLIONS of people so quickly, so essentially we are all battling to get a request to download cydia at the same time and the server(s)/mirrors cant take all load.

    on top of that, Loader is crap. you better hope that no one calls you, because the app will kill your download and you’ll have to restart the whole process. ALSO dont forget to turn off Auto-Lock because it will lock your phone, and yes, kill your download.

    Whelp, it seems that the server is working… or it did for me. So i didn’t have to use redsn0w, keep trying at the server if it doesn’t work!

    You’re a frakkin’ lifesaver! I was cursing my arse off after I got the blank pg in Loader, but your idea has worked like a charm for me!

    To those asking which RedSn0w to use, I used this one from RedmondPie website (and by the way from now on, I’m only using RedSn0w jailbreaks; never had an issue with them but this GreenPois0n mess wasn’t quite ready for primetime, sad to say):

    Ok….. I just got it to work. I followed the video… but I only did one step. The first thing you need to do is backup your iphone. The second step is to download and Greenpois0n. Then download a clean version of firmware 4.2.1. Run Greenpois0n….Once the phone comes on do not sync it. Of course, if you try to run loader either it will time out or Cydia will not connect. After looking around, I found this website and tried to follow the video.

    I used redsn0w 0.9.7b1. I ran redsn0w and browse for iPhone2,1_4.2.1_8C148a_Restore.ipsw. After you select the firmware, it will say processing, then it will switch to IPSW successfully identified. I got a message ” Is this a newer (fixed) model? I clicked yes. The next step is click next –> you will see a screen that will say preparing firmware–> once that screen goes away you will see the options screen. All you have to select is install Cydia. then click Next –> turn the phone off and follow the directions to the phone in DFU mode —> Once the phone reboots, it will reboot about 3 times on it’s own. At first I thought the phone was screwed. After the 3 reboot, the phone came back on and cydia was installed. I have connected to cydia and upgraded the software….. this is was my install. I hope it helps anyone that is having issues.

    I also noticed I didn’t have to run RedSn0w but once, with “Install Cydia” already checked. My phone didn’t boot but once, but afterwards I immediately tested the ‘tethered’ part and verified I can boot my phone w/o it being connected to the computer. All’s good over here!

    Jeff, you dont say which IPSW to runf irst in redsnow, then you dont tell us the first selections to make int he first run of redsnow, if its do to do the tethered jailbreak option or what, you only mention what the second option to choose is, which dosen’t help. This video is so weak.

    Hi guys! I don’t knwo what Redsn0w he’s using, but I used RedSn0w 0.9.7 beta 6. It’s ONLY available now for MAC. The firmware I used was the latest: IPhone 4 : 4.2.1 after the greenpois0n jailbreak. Hope this helps.

    On a separate note anyone ever come across a problemnwhere the iPad cannot connect to iTunes because the mobile device driver isnt started? And yes ive tried numerous times to start it with services and yes deleted and reinstall iTunes didnt work

      I had this problem once, tried everything, in the end the ONLY thing that worked was install iTunes on a different computer and try it there…

      If you can’t do that… When you uninstalled iTunes did you also uninstall quicktime and all related programs? There are pretty exhaustive tutorials online telling you what to delete and (!) in what order. And I recall reading somewhere that you can delete the mobile device server and download some file that makes it run OK.

    hey guys, i have an iphone 4 running iOS 4.2.1. its on redsn0w tethered jailbreak and it is giving me a lot of trouble. So since this untethered GreenPoison is out, how do i convert my tethered jailbreak into an untethered jailbreak with GreenPois0n? Help guys thanks! :D

      cant.. restore and rejailbreak with greenpois0n.. gives the instruction in the “read me” doc that comes with greenpois0n stating “if your jailbroken tethered FULL RESTORE first..” problems with cydia now tho.. u might as well stick tethered till cydia is fixed…

      yup.. theres a few missing.. its pissing me off.. i get ERROR: POSIX: operation timed out on the cydia refresh bar every time i open cydia.. cydia was running fine with the tethered redsnow jb but greenpoison seems to have caused it a few problems.. im restoring now, im going to untether with greenpoison, just ignore “loader”, (which is garbage) and run redsnow to get cydia, ill post results when i finish.. i miss the good old blackra1n one click jailbreak days..

        I am having the same exact issue and its pissing me off. I had everything working perfectly earlier, but had to restore in itunes and re-jailbreak because phone froze, now i cannot download any packages because Cydia just says ” downloading packages”, then i get that POSIX error. Anyone have a solution?

        it was repo servers getting swamped and a few command line issues with the servers apt.modmyi and saurik servers were down.. theyve been fixed and up n running full speed now so i hope ur all running ok now without the errors..

        unsuccessful.. still getting the “error posix operation timed out”.. ahhh!!! went to changes page, canceled the refresh bar, pushed the refresh button on changes page and it worked without giving me the error.. tried to duplicate got an “error host unreachable”.. triplicating, “error: POSIX: operation timed out”… “error: cached failure”.. seems there is either a problem with cydia running on greenpois0n rc5(seeing as how i installed it with redsnow and it was working fine yesterday while i was tethered [noticed the dev-team blog web page was down due to high volume of traffic yesterday, and finally came back online a few min ago] ) or theres just a sh*t ton of jailbreakers fighting for download permission trying to get their packages back after restore and greenpois0n.. ;Which i believe is the case bcuz i noticed in my manage>sources section, right after installing cydia there were only 3 sources and after refreshing the changes page those few times and letting it finish even after getting error messages, there are now 5 sources installed by package under manage>sources.. ill tweet @saurik and see if i can get a response from that busy guy to confirm the issue.. is cydia broken?! are there too many jailbreakers overloading cydia servers for downloads?! im gonna get to the bottom of this and hopefully a fix will be available for us soon.. ill post any new findings regarding a fix or info from @saurik..

      seems this has happened in the past, its a repo source not responding, like i said probably due to high volume of traffic, it will either cool down in a few days and fix itself or a cydia with fixes will be released shortly in a new jailbreak tool causing us all to have to rejailbreak once more.. agh.. never seen so many issues until 4.2.1…

      Run over that jailbreak with redsnow and click on install cydia only and you would be good to go…
      but u would probably run into the same error every body on this thread is running into….
