Zombie Infection [iTunes link] was created by Gameloft and is their version of Resident Evil for the iPhone. I’ve mentioned that I’m a Ninja fan, well I love Zombies as well. I picked up Zombie Infection during Gameloft’s Christmas Sale so I thought I would review it for you all.
Resident Evil fans will recognize some similarities. You are in a world full of Zombies and must shoot your way through the levels. Along the way you will have to find keys to open doors or activate switches to continue forward and will occasionally be required to touch buttons in a certain order to avoid being attacked. In addition, there will also be weapons to pick up along the way such as a shotgun, machine gun, rocket launcher and other ammo…
There are a few gruesome ways in which you can kill the zombies. Your gun will have a laser pointer and can easily target them. You can either shoot them in the head but for some reason this did not always work and for the bigger zombies this never worked. Also you can shoot their arms or legs off, and for the more gruesome kills, you can either do a super punch or stomp their heads in.
For those who have played Gameloft’s games then you will be familiar with the controls. The default controls consist of your virtual stick on the left with your fire button on the right. You will also have a reload, punch, and holster weapon buttons but these are completely adjustable in the settings.
The overall design of the game was what I was expecting of Gameloft. The graphics are similar to other Gameloft games like Hero of Sparta or NOVA. The Zombies moaned and groaned and upbeat music similar to your 80′s horror movie started when something was near.
But here are some issues in the game that irked me:
1. When Zombies are coming at you from all directions it’s really hard to quickly turn around and shoot them.
2. There are fake zombies in the game. For us Zombie fans, we all know that they are brain dead and only have the basic instinct to eat. To have any other skills suggests that they aren’t Zombies. For example:
a. There is a type of Zombie that holds a gun and shoots you.
b. Zombies that will step to the left effectively dodging your bullet.
c. There was a Zombie that was powering a crane trying to drop boxes on my head.
3. In all my years of gaming, I have never seen a shotgun with a laser pointer, period.
4. The bosses are far and few between. Most of the time it was just running, shooting, finding keys, and shooting some more which made the game really boring and really easy.
5. In this game there are crates littered around the map, which you can stomp on them to find ammo, and health packs. And yes they were littered everywhere!
6. No Achievements
7. Headshots don’t always happen. As I mentioned there is a laser pointer and I was 200% sure that I got the headshot… but alas it never happened.
Does anybody agree with me on these points or do you disagree?
But I don’t want to completely bash this game. Honestly, I did play this game for a few hours stretched over a few days. And that’s a lot longer gameplay than what most apps in the App Store can offer. Also there are almost 2,000 four-star reviews in the App Store so many people did enjoy this game.
All in all, if you’re a Zombie fan and love to kill them, you can pick up 4-star rated game for $2.99 in the App Store today.
