VLC media player was just updated as a universal app for iPhone and iPad in the App Store. The popular, open source, cross platform media player has been a favorite on Windows, OS X and Linux for years.

Awhile back, VLC released an iPad app in the App Store, and surprisingly the app was approved. VLC for iPhone allows you to play nearly every kind of video format known to man. The app clearly duplicates (and in my opinion, makes better) the video playback functionality of the the native iPod app. So, it’s interesting that Apple has finally approved it.

The developers of the VideoLAN player just got the VLC 1.1.0 update approved, which lets VLC run on the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and recent iPod touch models. I downloaded the app, and I was impressed.

VLC for iPhone is very simple to use. You load videos from your computer through iTunes for playback. In the “Apps” tab of your iDevice in iTunes, scroll down to the “File Sharing” option. You are given a list of all the apps that have file sharing compatibility on your device. Select VLC, and click “Add” to add video content from Finder.

The biggest plus to VLC is that you can finally playback file formats on your iPhone that iTunes doesn’t support. That means all of your .avi videos that you.. um.. “ripped” from your personally owned DVDs can be played through VLC without needing to be converted for iTunes. VLC for iPhone also lets you do in-app file management, meaning you can delete videos within the app.

There’s no reason to not download VLC for iPhone. It’s free. Pick up the universal app in the App Store.

What do you think? Will you be using VLC on your iPhone?

  • olepbr

Downloaded it too, but I would like to see subtitle support, so that VLC automatically selects the subtitle file with the same name as the video. Anyways great app!

  • Patrick

When I watch a movie, the voices dissapear. I can’t here ’em talk! All the other sounds is working tho, but it’s not enough.

  • Dhiraj

I can’t hear them talk….only background music. does any one know whts the problem?

  • vlc

not playing smoothly on 3Gs with .avi & .wmv movie files.. .rm .rmvb is ok.. sebs can u confirm me that on iphone 4 can play smoothly? thanks!

  • Mike

choppy on IP4 here. I used buzz player on the same file and it plays smoothly. wierd.. expected more from the vlc player.

  • vlc

thank you very much mike~~ so i save a few hundred dollar to get an i4 to test.. haha.. let’s me try buzz player.. would like to see how is the performance in i3s 🙂

  • Ty

Downloaded and syncing AVI files baby! Hope the playback is good on iP4 4.1.

  • Ty

    Looking good…

  • amit

OPlayer has the smoothest playback so far, lets see if VLC can beat it.

  • Karl

Barely works on my iPhone 4. Choppy playback, with broken up frames. audio/video out of sync. This is with standard MPEG-4 coded music videos that play flawlessly in iTunes. VLC is likely not given access to the necessary API calls to use hardware accelerated decoding. Thus the poor performance and battery drain.

  • porpy

it works great on my itouch. I just have one question though, does it support subtitles? I loaded my srt file but the subtitles doesn’t appear. Is there an option to enable it? Thanks.

  • Irha

If I want to transfer some media via SSH, anyone knows where it should go?

    • Irha

To answer my own question, you need to create a Documents folder at the same level where VLC.app folder is and put stuff into it. I found it out by first copying a dummy file via iTunes and doing a find on that file. I was then able to move all my older videos that I recorded using Cycoder into that directory and VLC found them and played them just fine.

  • TG

It kept saying my Iphone 4 might be to slow to watch this movie. Weird. Couldn’t get anything to play.

  • OfficeJunky

Just use Buzz Player. It came out long before the VLC did. And it was always available in the appstore. It’s $0.99 but you can always get the cracked version. It can pretty much play avi, flv, xvid, divx, 3gp and much more 🙂

  • Pittlife

Volume only work with headphone, no headphones no sound

  • fred1

just to confirm that VLC does work. Use iphonebrowser to go to
    users
    subfolder -documents
then drop the file which is mov or mp4 into it.
Wait for it to completely copied over and then
unplugged, you can then see the first frame of the video you copy in VLC.
I wonder why people mentioned oplayer etc, VLC is the open source written in C
and is free and is the best, tested with 560MB file by myself personally. Can play #without problem ….just try to believe. Of course you need to wait 10 second for a big file to load,
and don’t worry if it says , maybe too slow to pllay etc, just click ‘play anyway’
    don’t worry no problem…

No need itune to download etc. wasting time and adding complexity.

Of course your iphone 4 must be cracked to use iphonebrowser. use limera1n, no hassle
    no pain,
Thanks iphone 4 thanks iphonebrowser, thanks vlc.

    • vvip

What a need of VLC or Oplayer?? just to play mov and mp4 files? that one ipod player oledi can play it without any problem.. we need VLC or Oplayer to play wmv avi rm rmvb~ u r the only one dun understand y we need Oplayer or VLC~ lol

  • ropelli

is there a subtitle support for .sub or .srt -file formats?

  • Freebo

    Works like a charm

  • Marianr

No .srt on this update, first update i see that makes app worst!

  • Des

Cant hear the spoken words all other sound is fine

  • char

it doesn’t seem to play srt files. can someone help?

  • Oren

I’m not getting any sound – movie plays, but volume controls are disabled. Bummer. (iPhone 4, latest iOS).

  • Dotty

Lack of .srt support is really disappointing. I too can only hear sound from one channel (no dialogue) playing .avi

  • JBMthe2nd

I too on;t get some sound (no voices). Suspect it is automating to 5.1 channel or something. Can’t see anywhere to change any sound settings. Hope there is an update soon as the video playback is superb!

  • redandgreen

For those not getting any audio when it says “no volume available”: Turn the sound on the iphone itself back on (the switch physically on the phone) and it may work again.

  • Ergotron

I know that .ass subs work but im not sure of any others. I’ll be converting sub files tonight to see. Gl all

  • Joe

So, it seems that srt doesnt work in VLC 110… What other media player could I use for that

    • Ergotron

SRT doesn’t work but .ASS works fine. If you download vobsub and use the SubResync app you can convert and subtitle file to .ass really simply in order to use vlc app. its quite amazing and simple. Gl all

      • Michal

GREAT!! It´s works and it´s really simple. THX

  • Ergotron

    any*

  • Joe

    It really works! Thnx

  • Matt

I would love to have a subtitle support. Thanks.

  • Joe

Every .avi up to now has been playing with VLC with a lot of difficulties. Each movie has been frozen 6-7 times at least. Size is about 700 mb. Any idea how to solve the problem? I’m using ass subtitles converted via , and the latest version of VLC. Plenty of memory is available.

    • Ergotron

idk what your issue would be. Ive played 1.5 gb .avi with subs and vlc held up fine besides an initial “load-lag”

  • Dave

No video out with RCA cables. Why.

  • Tom

I am a big fan of vlc and have always used it only mac and pc. However this iPhone version is missing one crucial function: the ability to lock the video in landscape mode. I like watching films et whilst lying on my side and this is impossible in this version. (i know u can lock your iphone orientation but this locks vlc into portrait mode). Unless I am missing something.

  • AndyOfNZ

Bump to Tom’s post. Oplayer has the ability to lock orientation but there’s something about VLC I like more so would love to see this feature.
Also a little sluggish on large (1gb +) vids with subs which Oplayer seemed to handle. Weird.

  • Masum

Those who are facing the problem “No Volume Available”… Check if your phone is on MUTE.. If your mute switch is on then turn it OFF.. And you will get sound back on VLC Player…

  • DC

If you get “No Volume Available” on the Ipad plug in some headphones as stated earlier. Don’t know why but it works with headphones!

  • Lunnson

Works great but really would like to have video out to watch on my tv….

  • Fracis

Same here, I turn MUTE off and sound comes back, but only background sounds, no dialogues. Ouch!

  • Tim

For those with partial sound, eg background music and no speech, this is because the file you are playing is 5.1 surround and vlc does not down convert to stereo. This is something they need to fix as well as glitching video problem, which I suspect is an issue with the iframes.

    • and how can I convert This? (or downsamle) I am using windows but if its only available for linux i can install it as dual boot

  • jigar agarwal

i am not able to view video in landscape mode..i doesnt shift screen when i rotat my phone….y?

  • Abhishek

@jigar: double tap home button and scroll to right to check if orientation is locked.

Is there any video player in app store which can change 5.1 chnl audio to 2.1 chnl aud. Also the vlc player seems to be pulled down from app store.

  • AndyOfNZ

Yep, I heard that VLC stopped dev for iPhone and pulled from the app store. A big shame.

@jigar, I’ve had issues with rotation in general on my iPhone 4g where I’ve had to reboot the phone to get it working again. Should ne your first option when you get problems.

  • Prashanthan

I try to install vlc on my I Phone 4 Bt I cul’d get that , hw can I get that

  • Abhishek

It has been pulled down from app store coz of some bugs. One of them was accumulating movies stored in other apps to vlc inbox and you cant delete them.
