Sometimes it seems as if the iPhone truly has a mind of its own, and now with the latest plugin for ActionMenu, your iPhone can speak its mind as well.  Who needs to read all of the time anyway?  ActionMenu Voice plugin gets rid of the need to read by making transcribing quick, easy, and effortless.

Okay, so I was being facetious about the reading part. Reading’s great, in fact we highly recommend it here at iDB, but it is cool to know that the option to transcribe is right at your fingertips.  And you know what the best part about all of this is?  It won’t cost you a dime.

Being free is just one of the best parts about ActionMenu Voice.  The really great thing about this plugin, is that it’s app independent, just like ActionMenu itself.  That means that it’ll work universally among all apps.  And because it runs as a Mobile Substrate add-on, it’s always available, and doesn’t require any effort from the end user.

To transcribe some text, all you do is open the copy and paste menu like normally, and tap the lips icon (if you have icon support enabled) to make your iPhone start to chatter. You can also select specific text that you want to transcribe in order to prevent your iPhone from rambling like a phone that’s had one too many.

One last cool thing about ActionMenu Voice, is that you can transcribe your text into nearly 30 different dialects, from English to Japanese, via the Settings app.  Be sure to check out the video, because you really have to see it in action for yourself to get a sense of how cool ActionMenu Voice is.

ActionMenu Voice is a plugin available only for jailbroken iPhones, and can be downloaded via Cydia. Give it a try and let us know what you think.

  • Thanks for this – Just installed not bad at all 🙂

Good application the only problem is the sound of the voice. Would be great if you can change it to other voices sound

It’s like Steven Hawking reading me a bedtime story! I love this tweak so I can listen to articles while I drive. Is there something like this for a macbook pro?

    • Justin

How often do you read articles on your MacBook while driving?!?

      • Cojendo

Funny stuff. Say I’m in the house working and I want to multi task It would be nice to highlight and activate voice so I can keep mving and get my information.

There is already something like this on the 3GS.. As standard …just need to turn it on ..

  • Saice

i wish it would read the text messages.

    • Yeah, unfortunately, the way SMS works, there’s no way to can really use ActionMenu to transcribe SMS easily. Of course you could copy and paste an individual text and have it read that, but who wants to go through all of that trouble? 🙂 If that’s what you need, you can always try out something like CallTell – view our coverage of that jailbreak app here: http://www.iphonedownloadblog.com/2010/09/28/iphone-tells-who-calling/

Okay, the latest update enables SMS dictation, and it works pretty well. There are also some options to change the volume, and pitch. This is pretty nice for a free plugin. It would be even better if it would automatically speak your text messages as they arrived.

and it DOES NOT work for 3G… i dont understand why 3G owners have suddenly been so sidelined that they dont even deserve to be told whether or not an app is going to run on 3G.

We dont deserve limera1n or GP. redsnow does not allow unlocking because the BB upgrades and all the issues are with the 3G. Not everyone can afford to upgrade right? so help us out here.

sorry, but im upset that we are treated like the lowly mortals with a “stupid ol’ 3G” who deserve no upgrades or new tweeks at all. i wish someone comes up with a 3g version for this wonderful add-on. thanks to those who give us these goodies and with all due respect, please see if you can retro fit these apps for the poor 3G owners. thanks and sorry for the rant.

It’s not working properly for me. I installed the newest version and it keeps crashing every time I want it to read parts of longer texts, even though the actual highlighted part is very short. After tapping “Voice” Safari/Notes crashes and with it Action Menu.
TXTs work fine and short text most of the time, as well.

Anybody know how to solve that problem?
