The latest update for the Netflix iPhone app just hit the App Store. It now boasts video-out capabilities for the iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4th generation. This update is huge for those of us who use out iDevice for everything.

I’m a little curious if this will make any difference in quality for those on the 3G/3GS using DisplayOut, TVOut2, or Resupported. Regardless, I’m excited to test out the new functionality, and may opt for some extension cables to make my iPhone AV cable reach the TV from the couch.

Can someone please tell me cables that actually work with the iPhone 4 for video out?

  • CCallaway

I downloaded the update but still only get sound from my 3GS w/ ios 4

    • Eric

It’s for iPhone 4 only. Can you read?

      • CCallaway

Why yes, I can. There are many 3GS users anticipating this update as well. I thought it was worth a shot to try it out. Hopefully Netflix can read also. Thanks for your concern Eric!!!

The App is nice to select the movie on the go. But i don’t think it is a great feature to purposly have the cable for the TV OUT to watch netflix, but what is the Apple TV for ? Even if you are at a friend house i’d guess they have a xbox or a ps3 to watch netflix..

    • Felix

I personally don’t use apple tv. And using the ps3 netflix is not as fast or convenient as the iPhone/iPod app.

Can someone tell me how to do this ?? What kind of cable to use??!

  • SoCoMagNuM

I have a Dexim HD Cradle that outputs component video to TV. Got mines off ebay for like $40 but they regular priced at $80&up. I work at walmart and they carry composite cables priced at $40. Also available at apple store for not so competitive price again ebay, you can get them OEM at cheaper price.

  • Apple offers a Composite AV Cable for video-out on their site for $50.

Just test the out stream with my IPhone 4 works and looks great. I’m using FIOS backbone. No problems very clear

The latest update still crashes when you’re trying to play a video on iOS 4.2 Beta 2 with my iPad. Some co-workers here have better luck than me, but mine crashes every time but once since updating to beta 2.

Why only for iPhone4?!?! Im not giving to Apples attempt to force me to buy new hardware…

    • E4tH

Its not apple that is attempting to force you to buy new hardware. It was netflix developers that did not include the tv out feature for other devices. I’m guessing it is because they didn’t want to listening to people complain about the terrible quality of the video when people started connecting their iphone’s to HD TVs since old idevice don’t have as high of a resolution as the iphone 4 or the ipod touch 4gen. And also because component and composite cables suck vs HDMI.

“Support for 1024 by 768 pixels with Dock Connector to VGA Adapter”
I don’t think there is an hdmi cable for iphone. If you do have the vga adapter than you must drink the kool-aid.(and buy all the new hardware)
Which is worse, to watch in dvd 480i quality, or not be able to output at all?
Composite may suck but dvd has not gone the way of the betamax yet.
Netflix scales quality based on bandwidth, so no problem. Youtube app outputs fine, so no problem. Apple never promised not to be evil.

I have an iphone4 and it will be the first and last apple product I ever buy for that exact reason.
