Apple is rumored to be hosting a top secret iOS developer conference in California this week. The event is supposed to start on Tuesday and run through Thursday.

Could this meeting of the minds be Apple’s attempt to counteract the rise of Google’s Android platform in the smartphone market? There’s plenty to speculate about…

I’ve run into a ton of good apps for the iPhone lately. Rather than picking some and reviewing them one by one, I figured I would just list them all in a roundup. So, here’s some interesting apps that I’ve found recently… Read More

Apple Looking into Nitride Coating for Scratch Proof iPhones and Other Devices

By Guest Author on Oct 30, 2010

According to Appleinsider, this week the U.S. Patent Office published information on an application submitted by Apple entitled “Nitriding Stainless Steel for Consumer Electronic Products.” It’s a cost effective process for placing a nitride coating on top of stainless steel to create more scratch resistant products for consumers.

According to Apple’s application, “In addition to providing a durable, hard surface that is both scratch and impact resistant, the nitride layer allows for the natural surface color and texture of the underlying stainless steel to remain visible to the user”. The application reads: “It is this natural surface color and texture of the stainless steel that adds to the aesthetically pleasing appearance of the consumer electronic product, thereby enhancing the user’s overall experience.”

MiddleWhat Makes it Easy To Enable FaceTime on Region Restricted Phones

By Jeff Benjamin on Oct 30, 2010

A couple days ago, Sebastien reported on a hack called FaceTime Hacktivator, which is a tweak that allows you to use FaceTime in areas where it has been banned. There are reportedly a few places in the Middle East that have restricted Apple’s video calling feature, so this will prove most useful to those using iPhones in those areas.

MiddleWhat does the same thing as FaceTime Hacktivator, with one small difference. I guess you could say it takes the “middle man” out of the equation. That is, it’s featured on the stock Cydia repos, so there’s no need to add a separate repository just to get access to this hack. Although, if you were too lazy to add the repo reported in yesterday’s article, chances are you don’t care that much about FaceTime anyway.

A Favorite Mac Application Drops By the iPhone

By Jeff Benjamin on Oct 30, 2010

Droplr. No, not Dropbox, but Droplr. Similar in function, similar in name, but quite different in a lot of interesting ways. Droplr is one of my favorite Mac apps, and for good reason. It allows you to quickly upload and share practically anything by simply dragging and dropping.

Just recently, the iPhone counterpart to Droplr appeared in the App Store. How does it work? If you already use DropBox, should you even consider it? And, most importantly, does it feature two way syncing between the desktop application and the iPhone app? We tackle all of that and more inside…

Apple Becomes the 4th Mobile Vendor in the World

By Sebastien Page on Oct 29, 2010

After recently becoming the largest tech company in the world, Apple just passed RIM to become the 4th largest vendor of mobile devices in the world, just behind Nokia, Samsung, and LG Electronics (who the hell owns an LG phone?).

Apple shipped 14.1 million units within the last 3 months, while Nokia, Samsung, and LG respectively shipped 110.4 million, 71.4 million and 28.4 million units. RIM is just behind Apple with 12.4 million devices shipped.

Apple is still pretty far behind the first 3 but remember that the company got into the mobile space only 3 years ago. You can only imagine where it’s going to be in 3 more years…

iOS 4.2 Jailbroken on Arrival

By Jeff Benjamin on Oct 29, 2010

When Apple releases the final version of iOS 4.2 to the public next month, you shouldn’t have to wait long before a jailbreak is released. The jailbreak might even be released on the same day that Apple makes iOS 4.2 available to the masses.

A couple of days ago, iOS hacker iH8sn0w posted an image of an iPad, one obviously on firmware iOS 4.2, running the jailbreak only mobile terminal app. As we reported earlier, due to the nature of the jailbreak, the quick turnaround time should be something we should see going forward, because one of the exploits is a hardware exploit that, according to hackers, can’t be patched… Read More

White iPhone 4 Gone From Apple’s Online Store

By Jeff Benjamin on Oct 29, 2010

We heard this might happen, but seeing is believing. Apple has totally removed any trace of the white iPhone 4 from the online store. No more “coming soon,” it’s just gone.

There are now just three flavors of iPhone’s advertised on the Apple store, the Black 8GB 3GS, the Black 16GB iPhone 4, and the 32GB Black iPhone 4. Of course, this will inevitably change with the next iteration of the device — the iPhone 5. Hmm, Verizon anyone?

Have You Ever Misplaced Your iPhone? “I Can’t Find My iPhone” to the Rescue!

By Alex Heath on Oct 29, 2010

Have you ever misplaced your phone? I think it’s safe to say we all have at one point. I know I’ve wasted time more than once while scrambling through my room trying to find my iPhone.

Usually I have to try and find another phone to call my own so that I can hear my ringtone. But what about the instances when another phone is not available and you really need to find your iPhone?

A few friends of mine don’t have landline phones in their house anymore. What do you do when there is no other phone around and you don’t have MobileMe’s “Find My iPhone” feature? That’s when “I Can’t Find My Phone,” by Dave Dawson, comes to the rescue…

Is Square the Future of Mobile Payments?

By Guest Author on Oct 29, 2010

Last week it was reported that Square, a mobile credit card reader, had opened its doors and was available for download in the app store. Square is the brainchild of Jack Dorsey, who is also co-founder of Twitter.

The app, when used in conjunction with a small card reader that plugs into the auxiliary port, allows anyone to process credit card payments. This takes “mobile payments” to a whole new level as now small businesses and vendors can process payments without the need for a wired or complex point-of-sale system.

All you need is a compatible device (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or one of select Android devices), the card reader, and a signal on your device.

So what does this mean for retailers and small businesses? Is it secure to use? And what about the cost? Will this be the new method businesses large and small use? Read more to find out…

Google Adds Improvements to Gmail in Mobile Safari

By Jeff Benjamin on Oct 28, 2010

I can’t say that I use Gmail in mobile Safari too often, considering that the native Mail App has great support for Gmail, but there must be some of you crazy folks out there that still do.

Fret not, Google has heard your cries for an improved mobile Safari experience, they’ve seen your tears, and they’ve felt your pain. As a result, an updated version of Gmail for mobile Safari is now live at last.

What new features can you expect to see? Well, too be honest, they’re more on the aesthetics side of the house, meaning they don’t add much in the way new functionality. Check inside for the details on not one, but two new improvements for Gmail on mobile Safari…  Read More

How to Activate FaceTime in Unsupported Countries

By Sebastien Page on Oct 28, 2010

For some reasons far beyond my understanding, FaceTime has been banned from several countries in the Middle East, and up until today, there was to way to activate FaceTime there. It’s now possible thanks to a hack called FaceTime Hacktivator.

Like most hack, it requires your iPhone 4 to be jailbroken. If it’s not done yet, you can do so using PwnageTool, GreenPois0n, or LimeRa1n. Once jailbroken, follow these instructions to activate FaceTime in any unsupported countries, including in the Middle East… Read More

Google Adds App Store Search to the iPhone

By Alex Heath on Oct 28, 2010

You can now search the App Store through Google search on the iPhone. Google recently added an “iPhone apps” category to its search options. This new option is available within the official Google Mobile app and the Google web interface on mobile Safari.

Google indexes the App Store to bring you only iPhone apps when you are searching on your iPhone or iPod touch. You are given a list of results with the price, average star rating and a brief description for your viewing pleasure. Nothing too fancy though.

When you click the app you want to go to, Google merely takes you to the iTunes web preview page. And the preview page doesn’t even prompt the App Store app to open, which is odd… Read More

If You Could Only Choose One Jailbreak App

By Jeff Benjamin on Oct 28, 2010

If you could only have one jailbreak app, which one would it be? I had to think long and hard about this, because there are so many great jailbreak apps that make the iPhone such a delightful device to use.

Ultimately, though, I was able to decide on one app in particular that I just can’t live without. Can you guess what it is?

To scrobble is the act of sending information of a currently playing track, or song, to Last.fm. Last.fm is a free service that recommends and suggests music by discovering new music based on the music you play. In short, it’s a social network that focuses on music and artists only.

Can’t Run APT-GET from SSH/MobileTerminal? Try this

By Nick Prokesch on Oct 28, 2010

After jailbreaking for 4.1, many of you will notice you can no longer run apt-get commands from the command line, whether SSH or MobileTerminal. This is mind boggling, and none of the support sites or forums seem to have the right answer. The most common suggested solution is to delete some sources from Cydia and re-add them. This doesn’t work.

After a few hours of troubleshooting, I gave up and assumed it was a limitation of greenpois0n. However, today I accidentally found the answer, and it’s quite simple to make this work again. Read More
