After weeks of self debate and bugging Sebastien about the possibilities of jailbreaking my iPhone 4, I took the leap of faith Wednesday night and cracked opened my device. I must say that the whole process was unbelievably painless and took no more than 5 minutes to perform the hack and update the Cydia packages.

I used JailbreakMe to perform the procedure and I will vouch for the website any day. After 2 or 3 minutes of loading, the device was jailbroken and ready to be used. Perhaps it was the Apple aroma in the air after their event, but nevertheless having jailbroken my iPhone 4 makes it feel like launch day all over again…

The last device I jailbroke was my iPhone 3G over a year ago. You may ask, “Why now Ethan”? Since I never updated to 4.0.2 I figured that if something went horrifically wrong I could always just download the update and start from square one.

Had I known how pain-free the experiment was going to go, I probably would have gone through with the ordeal a long time ago. I don’t know what the policy is for recommending others to go ahead and jailbreak their devices, but I will say that if you’re hearing horror stories of JailbreakMe I would seriously consider your source. It was literally as fast as backing up a device in iTunes.

So there you have it, friends. I am now once again among the community of the open sourced brigade. Any of you who took a previous article of mine as condemning the process should be thoroughly confused.

Now who’s got some suggestions as to where I should start my 3rd party downloading?

  • Ramon P

I did it to the fastest way

    • Required iPhone jailbreak apps:

      Five icon dock (free)
      Sbsettings (free)
      Recent Delete (free)
      Rock Extenstions (free)
Backgrounder (free – yes even on iOS4 still comes in handy)
      Cydelete (free)
      3G Unrestrictor (paid)
      IFile (paid)
MyWi (paid – through Rock Extensions)
      Browser Changer (free)
      SnapTap (paid)
      ToneFXs (paid)

For you to wrestle with your conscience: Installous (you have to “add” the source “http://cydia.hackulo.us” first in cydia)

  • Burge

    First get sbsettings
Then remove bg ( both the sbseting toggle and the app to set which apps to keep running )
    Five icon dock is cool
    Folder closer
    Simple background for scrolling wallpaper
    Activator
INoRotate for keep screen the way you open the app ( landscape / portrait )
    There’s a start have fun

  • Ethan

Anyway to not have SBS kill my battery?

    • Burge

      Bosspref
But it mightn’t work on i4 and it’s not getting updates

    • Will

No , I don’t have any problems with Battery issues . If you are cocern over battery , you should definitely dl auto3g. Works like a charm

    • Huh? SBSettings doesn’t kill your battery. I’ve never even heard of that. It’s very minimal, just sits there doing nothing until you need it.

Cyntact is one of my favorite hacks. It’s also a good one to show off to people asking what you can get with jailbreaking. It just adds the pictures of your contacts to the contacts listing. Simple, easy, can’t do that with a normal app. And it’s worth giving the buck to Saurik. Also you can see how the Paypal based checkout process with Cydia works. It’s not as smooth as with the App Store, but it works okay after the initial setup.

Other stuff I consider must have:
CyDelete – Delete JB apps in the same way as any other apps.
Five Icon Dock and Five Icon Switcher – Simple, puts 5 icons into the dock or the background switcher.
iBlacklist – Lets you block numbers/contacts so that the phone doesn’t ring when they call (straight to voicemail or just hang up on them outright).
NoSpot – completely hide the spotlight search, if you never use it like most people.
PDFPatch – Fix the flaw that allows jailbreak me to work (it’s a security hole, might as well be safe)
Winterboard – Themes of all sorts. This is required for most themes, so you’ll probably install it as a dependency at some point.
      SBSettings – Obviously
Remove Background and Remove Background SBSettings – Lets you one-click remove all the background apps from the phone and close them. Frees up memory and helps save battery life. Also can let you designate apps to never go into background mode, which a lot of them do unnecessarily.

These naturally will install other packages to make them work, and in so doing, you’ll get a lot of useful functionality.

Maybe u can help me. U seem to know what u are talking about. I’ve had a cheap garbage Boost Moblie phone since they came out & it FINALLY broke so I splurged & bought an iPhone 4. Until recently I knew nothing about how they work, etc but I’m blown away by this phone. I’ve been doing a little research & I’ve decided I want to jailbreak my phone but I’m a little apprehensive cuz I don’t wanna screw anything up. I’ve read that u shouldn’t jailbreak a certain version of iOS 4.something (can’t remember). I just went into my settings. It says I have version 4.1. I see all this stuff about version 4.2?? My phone isn’t even a month old so I thought I’d have the newest version bit the phone says 4.1. Can u tell me a little bit about jailbreaking? I love love love the idea of getting a SNES emulator & I’d love to customize my phone (heard u can really customize a jailbroken phone). Also, I hear jailbreaking will void warranty but u can reset ur phone thru iTunes. But I also heard that w the newest jailbreak u CANNOT reset the phone back to original settings. Any help & advice would be appreciated. I hope I didn’t totally sound like an idiot, but I really know nothing about all this stuff. It’s all very technical to me & I’m not too smart w all that technical stuff. So plz

So I jailbreak my iPhone 4 the other day. And jailbreakme.com said ” looks like the jailbreak crash” try it agian. When I tried it said ” jailbreak again could be harmful”. So I said fuck that. Then I saw cydia and I click on it. It takes forever to load there are never any updates. And when I download 3G unrestricted it downloads the app. But everytime I click the app it crashes. I just think I need to a fresh copy of cydia. So I have to have a clean firmware in order to jailbreak it. How do I do it? I’m on firmware 4.0

  • CLOZER

The problem is jailbreakme is only used for 4.0.1 or earlier software… 4.0.2 and above will not work and possibly destroy your phone

  • Alvaro

    Welcome aboard!

  • iphone sux

non-jailbroken iphone is a crippled iPhone

  • Thanks for all the warm welcome. Today was a busy day for me so I didn’t get much tinker time with my newly hacked device.

I still need to set up my card with the Cydia Store so I can fully partake in the madness.

Thanks to all who recommended apps and thanks boss for the links.

  • Naomi

I had a jailbroken iPhone since I bought it about two years ago and also after buying iPhone 4 but after comparing how fast iphone is without a jailbreak I think I can live without all these “life-saving” apps from Cydia. But it’s great to have a choice and maybe one day… who knows 😉

    Hey all.

I jailbroke my iPhone 3G to reduce the pain of the slow responding iOS 4.1 it had. When I jailborke it I used the 3.1.3 iOS and now I cannot use some of my paid for apps without having 4.0 or higher IOS. What is the best method of upgrading to a 4.X iOS and not losing all of my data like I did when I jailbroke it?

    Thanks in advance

    L
