Tethering: How to Tether the iPhone 4

Until last week when the iPhone 4 was finally jailbroken, your only option to tether the iPhone 4 was to go through the official, legit and expensive way: AT&T. If like me you think that an extra $20/month just to tether your iPhone 4 is a little too much, we’ve got a solution for you. It’s called MyWi.

We’ve talked greatly about MyWi on iDB before but for those of you who just arrived let me tell you briefly what it does. MyWi is an app that let’s you turn your iPhone into a wifi hostpot. Turn it on and share your iPhone Internet connection with computers around you. That’s how simple it is.

Tethering Your iPhone 4 Using MyWi

Step 1: Make sure your iPhone 4 is jailbroken (see iPhone 4 jailbreak instructions)

Step 2: Launch Cydia and search for “MyWi 4.0”.

Step 3: Download and install the free MyWi trial then reboot your iPhone.

Step 4: Launch MyWi and tweak the settings to your liking:

  • Change the hotspot name
  • Change the channel
  • Enable Wep security
  • Enable USB/Bluetooth tethering

That’s it. You can now tether your iPhone using MyWi. Your iPhone doesn’t even have to be plugged in your computer. You can just use MyWi as a hotspot, but remember it will drain your battery like crazy.

While MyWi is not illegal in itself, AT&T (or your local carrier) might have a policy in place to prevent you from using apps like MyWi. As long as you don’t get caught, it’s all good…

If you want to keep MyWi after the 10-day trial, it will cost you about $20. Although it comes with a hefty price, I believe MyWi is one the best jailbreak apps out there.

      Trust me jailbreaking sounds good. But don’t do it it messes your programing up and basically ruins your iPhone I did it with my last one and it totally shut down

    I don’t want to pay an outrageous amount for tethering just as much as anyone else doesn’t, but getting caught would be much worse than paying $20/month.

    So, what’s the possibility of getting caught? I’ve always been pretty paranoid about doing anything that could fine me $800+ dollars.

    @Shaun If you don’t “over use” MyWi, I think the chances of you being caught are very thin. If you however download tons of music and videos over MyWi, then expect a call from AT&T.

    @Barrow I don’t know about a limit. I’d imagine 3-4 devices would be max

    To all of you worried about being caught.
    ATT doesn’t care if your on a 2gb or 200mb limit. You will just pay them more.
    For those of us on unlimited they havnt done anything to anyone… Ever.
    Just don’t go using 8gigs+ a month and your fine. Some countries have 5gig caps on your unlimited plan. Even then they usually don’t comment if you go over

    i have used over 10gigs at one time 6 months ago i downloaded full call of duty 4 of steam and it was 12gigs :) , getting caught it slim and i have been tethering maybe since wireless mobile broadband was affect

    I just LOVE MyWi on my iP4 ….. good thing I was able to keep my unlimited data plan!!! used it this week for the 1st time EVER!! the hotel we stayed @ wanted 15$ for 24hrs of Internet access …… MyWi has ALREADY paid for itself ….. in just ONE 24 hr period!!!!

    So for the OP, you may want to stop leading these people into thinking it allows bluetooth tethering cause it does NOT

    I have been tethering since the days of the SE W810i phone came out, i have consistently pulled in 10-30 gigs per month on my AT$T svc and not one time has AT$T texted or called me about my usage…
    My data plan states UNLIMITED data and that means NO limit PERIOD…. I tether my iphone daily and enjoy every second of it…
    Internet access as long as my phone has signal anywhere in the US…. heck yea, thats the sh*t right there. Im never away from the internet as long as this phone shows svc :)

      The tethering app & your unlimited data plan have absolutely nothing to do with each other. Both are independant and work seperately.
      Your data plan states unlimited data which means you are free to browse & Download all you want, hence the UNLIMITED name. They cannot legally say Or do anything to you cause they sold you an unlimited data plan.
      That mywi app only allows you to tether a pc or any internet devise that runs off wifi.. They cannot detect that app nor control it nor remove It. Once you purchased your iPhone, you OWN it and it’s yours to do whatever you want to do with it, keep that in mind…
      At$t are nothing but a bunch of $$ hungry greedy bast*rds that want to control your data usage and the way you use it.
      You don’t see Verizon and or sprint and or tmobile capping their data plans do you…? Do they restrict you from making your phone into a wifi hotspot..? They already sell those 3g wifi hotspot boxes… At$t still does NOT offer that and will not offer one.
      Get that app and enjoy it while you still have unlimited data :)

      Or if u think u know it all, go ahead and pay AT$T that monthly tethering fee which only allows tethering over Bluetooth and USB…. NO wifi tethering.

      Actually It does not. Pdanet only allows ur iPhone to become a wifi hotspot, while mywi will do the same as well as allow you to tether over USB and / or Bluetooth.
      Mywi 4.0 will not allow Bluetooth tethering, earlier versions of mywi allow Bluetooth tethering…
      Wifi tethering is a massive battery killer which is why I don’t use that method, I use Bluetooth tethering, it’s a secure one on one link between my iPhone and my pc and nobody else can use it, plus is uses less battery.

    So, If I buy a Factory Unlocked iPhone 4, will Mywi 4.0 work with it, and can you use Bluetooth tethering? Also, when you do this, can you use facetime on your phone free anywhere or does it only act as a hotspot for a different wireless device?

      You must jailbreak the phone 1st by attempting to install mywi.. Did you not read the above..?? MyWi 4.0 does not support Bluetooth tethering.
      Facetime only works on wifi in it’s original un jailbroke state, once you jailbreak it, then you can install My3g which will make face time think it’s on wifi… While it’s actually on 3G… :)

    Just my .02 Can’t you plug the iPhone into the pc/mac,or whatever your online with,to keep it charged up? That is if it has a usb port.

      You must have iTunes on that mac or pc for the iPhone to charge via usb port.. iTunes has the drivers needed for the usb charging to work, otherwise the mac or pc wont know what to do with that iPhone once its plugged into the usb port… it will see it as just another usb device and assign basic drivers to it… but those basic drivers wont do much for that iPhone. It needs specific drivers to allow usb charging and or usb tethering and or usb data transfer…

      No, you didn’t give a clear understandable answer. In fact, you answered questions that weren’t even asked, hence the confusion. People commented that this could be a power drain. CoolHand asked could you just keep it plugged into a computer to keep it powered. You answered that that computer would have to have iTunes installed in order to power the iPhone. I think we all know that’s a given. The question was whether it’s a *problem* to have that jailbroken iPhone connected to iTunes for power while running MiWi. As in, would the combination alert Att/apple/iTunes that something funny was going on.

      Otherwise, even if you’ve connected the devices via wifi for Internet access, why wouldn’t you also connect them for power?

    I have read everyones questions and responses so please forgive me if what I ask has already been asked…my stepdaughter just got her iPhone 3GS and it is jailbroken-however I believe she is on the 2gb data plan….she bought the mywi 4.0 app last week and it says she has surpassed her data allowance for the month….my question: is her tethering with the mywi app using up her data?

      The point is you only pay one price for a data plan and that data plan should ONLY be to your cell phone, you then get a cell phone that is tetherable and now you got data to your cell phone as well as all your pc’s for one single price…
      Paying for tethering and or a seperate USB stick is a rip off and a half…
      The key is within the phone..

    I was interested in the app until I read Tethermaster’s rude customer service replies to several of the people on this post. I would not trust an app created by someone who responds with such rudeness to basic miscommunication or misunderstanding. Tethermaster and the app seems features seem sketchy…

    My iPhone was jailbroken seconds after leaving the at$t store.. And was able to tether within 2 hrs of getting home so fuk off…

    I know that all of these posts are about tethering but I wanted to ask of anyone has successfully jailbroken the iphone 3GS 4.0.2? My phone was jailbroken and for watever reason (me being a dumbass) I updated my software and lost my jailbreak…so was just curious if anyone had any luck?

    You can update apps. The only thing you shouldn’t do is update the phones software. If you do update the phones software you will lose your jailbreak. You will also still be able to buy apps for the app store

      Limera1n will jailbreak ALL iphones and even the newest firmware.. It cannot be reversed by software update from apple. They must do a hardware change to remove the jailbreak.

    I have a quick question, does anyone know if there is a way to still get the unlimited data for the iPhone 4, if you have never had an iPhone before? Also i was a little confused, this app turns your iPhone into a hotspot and if you have itunes on the computer you want to tether on, then you can charge it and tether at the same time?

      u must have unlimited data from your previous iphone data plan to keep it. unlimited is NOT offered anymore (its at$t’s way to not spend $$ on their network to upgrade and also for them to make more $$ off you in overage charges once you exceed the 200mb / 2gb plan…)

      When you plug your pc into your iPhone it will tether via usb and charge at the same time BUT you NEED to download iTunes for the iPhone drivers..

      This app is to tether over WIFI signal … it takes your 3G and re-broadcasts is over an 802.11 wifi signal..

    my free trial is up.. what do i do when i buy the my wi is it like a CC you must pay with?

    sorry still a little new at the cydia app…

    and is my wi the only app i can use for tethering for free?

    it uses all my battery even when its charging.

      You must have a facebook or google account to pay for anything on cydia.
      iPhone 4 must have that cydia app to tether… iPhone 3G and 3GS can tether for free with a different app that probably isnt available anymore.

    Hey Tethermaster, I was just wondering.. is there anyway Apple/At&t/whatever can tell that I’m using MyWi to tether if I’m connected to my PC via USB? Like maybe they’ll receive the data through iTunes or something like that and bust my ass? D: I’m on an unlimited plan myself.. but doing some research I’ve heard even with an unlimited plan, you can only use up to 5gigs a month..? For tethering that is.

      No, they cannot see a tethered connection… They only ASSUME that you are tethering by the physical amount of data you are consuming.
      If you have unlimited data, then do not worry about it, tether away and enjoy it, they cannot legally do anything to you if you have unlimited data.

      The only plans that have that 5gb cap are the air cards and usb sticks that they sell for pc’s which is a $60 a month charge. BIGGEST waste of $$ if you ask me, Your data plan to your phone is unlimited… USE IT WISELY….!!!
