How to Unlock iPhone 4 iOS 4.0.1 with UltraSn0w

This guide and tutorial will show you how to unlock your iPhone 4 running iOS 4.0.1 using UltraSnow 1.0-1. This method will not only work with the iPhone 4 but also with older models. UltraSnow 1.0-1 will unlock:

  • The iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 4
  • Basebands 01.59.00, 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01 and 05.13.04

Note that UltraSn0w will work no matter what your iPhone model number is.

In order for UltraSn0w to work, your iPhone must be activated. If it isn’t, follow these instructions to activate your iPhone without the original SIM card.

Step 1: Jailbreak your iPhone using JailbreakMe.

Step 2: Go to Cydia and search for UltraSn0w. If it’s not there, you might have to add the following repo: repo666.ultrasn0w.com

Step 3: Install UltraSn0w.

Step 4: Reboot your iPhone.

Done! Your iPhone should be unlocked. You can now pop in any SIM card. If you unlocked an iPhone 4, you might have to trim the new SIM so it fits in the tray.

Because the iPhone doesn’t support T-Mobile’s 3G frequencies, T-Mobile users in the US should turn off 3G in Settings > General > Network.

    I jailbroke successfully through jailbreakme.com, and tried to install ultrasn0w but now my phone won’t restart (hangs on the black screen with the apple logo). Any ideas?

    So, a question. I have been jailbroken and unlocked on my 3GS for a year (thanks to you, Sebastien), and just used Pwnage 4.01 to upgrade to iOS4.0. I tried to custom cook iOS4.0.1 firmware for my device, but it wouldn’t cook it. Should I care to get to iOS4.0.1 or just hold tight for iOS4.1? If I should care (i.e. were there substantial bugs fixed?), is JailbreakMe the tool to do it? Should I wait for the next Pwnage version that can custom cook iOS4.0.1 (or 4.1 by that time?)? I’m hesitant to go with JailbreakMe, b/c if I had used it earlier, I couldn’t have gotten to iOS4 this time…

    Now that this new version of UltraSn0w is out, I can consider getting to 4.0.1, as I absolutely need the carrier unlock (living in India, but US based). Thanks Sebastien and all ~ Jeremy

    I have tired to unlock it but i only have the 0.93 version of ultrasn0w. I tried deleting and adding the source in cydia as well as restarting my phone several times. Any ideas?

    I had unlockedt for a wh my 3gs and used it for a while. Than I upgraded it and couldnt used it till jailbreakme came out. İt worked perfectly. I have another 3gs. İts unloced with blackrain. But I always have to use computer to jailbreak and unlock everytime when its battery died. Thus ı wannt to unlock and jailbreak it with jailbreakme. My question is, should I restore it ot is there any way to jaşlbreak it when its already unlock. Because it gives error while ı try to jailbreak it with using jailbreakme.com

    os 4.0.1 3gs phone was vodafone ,same issue with really low reception but everything else all good.suppose the reception is quite a serious issue really!

      Solved my problem, the listed version of redsn0w here isn’t compatible with the listed version of iphone firmware if anyone else is having the same problem you want redsn0w 0.9.5 or 0.9.5b.

      Hope this helps those who use the search function.

    I have an iPhone 3GS, jailbroken it using jailbreakme.com and installed UltraSn0w, restarted the iPhone, placed a sim card, and it locks and says (Different Sim Card Detected). I remove the Sim Card and the phone goes normal as in i can access Cydia again. Please advice

    I have bought an iphone 4 from UK but now i am in India. My phone is not activated and i don’t have any activation sim from UK. When i put my Indian Sim itunes gives me an error message saying that my carrier is not supported and it can not activate my iphone. I can only see a screen on Iphone which says emergency calls only.     @TheTigerTek, plug your iPhone into the USB cable and insert into your computer with iTunes loaded. It should force the phone to start in recovery mode!

    No such luck D.
    I even jailbroke (?) the phone again and it informs me that the phone cannot connect to cellular data network while installing ultrasn0w. I think that this is a critical step. ARGGG!
    I know that it is better to be lucky than good, but this is ridiculous as I can’t seem to manage either.
    Also, the error message indicates that it is unable to Upload Network List comes as I try to connect to the carrier. I hope that this is enough information to find a remedy.

    What version firmware do you have ? This method works well with 4.0.1 and older, if you have anything newer I suggest you look at the dev-team site for answers. I kept my firmware on 4.0.1 and unlocked and jailbroke my iPhone on the first try using the above method.

      I was planning to buy iPhone 4 in US which comes with firmware 4.2 (most latest) I guess and wanted to unlock it to use in India. So I think it seems to be impossible to unlock it. So diverting myself to some other smart phone now.

        I think I figured out the problem. I checked the baseband and found that it was 04.15.xx (don’t remember the rest. I believe this to be the problem and should try to upgrade to 4.2.1 inorder to see satisfactory results.
        … but I don’t have a mac. I’m a PC guy.

        Hope that this is a correct solution.

    I would also check the baseband version, but if you have fw 4.0.1 it should be OK.
    This is what I would do, load a default 4.0.1 using itunes, you can find a firmware
    here: http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/
    This should get your phone back to a regular working order, then go through the unlock steps
    again, do the network part using a wifi connection not 3G. Again, with a little luck all should
    go well and you’ll end up with an unlocked/jailbroken phone.

      The current iOS is 4.2.1 and no you cannot ask for. A lower firmware you can ask but they can’t get it for you though lol

    Going to USA this week. Need to know if I can get the Iphone4 along with the contact for $ 199.00 and bring it to India and make it work. From what i gather in the above comments, I will have to get the firmware to base version of 4.0.1 if it already has the higher version and then I can unlock it work on Vodafone connection. If i am wrong please save me by telling me the truth and not wasting my hard earned $$.

      You can’t because you need to have a social security number by having a green card or be a citizen so you’d have to pay full price or try craigslist you might get a better deal on craigslist and have it already unlocked good luck and enjoy your stay in the USA!

    Thanks Jason, but even if I get if from Craiglist, would it not be locked to AT&T (unless its been unlocked by the seller, for which he/she woudl want a premium). Or I can still go for a locked Iphone 4 from craiglist and then get it unlocked in India as AT&T will not give me an Iphone per the reason you mentioned. Will the Iphone 4 be able to be unlocked and work in India. I hear there is a way that Apple can track the phone and force lock it again.

      You can probably find an unlocked one for a Lil bit higher and no att cannot force lock it that was talked about but never done I’d say your best bet is still craigslist and make sure you tell them you want it unlocked if i were you I’d bring my sim card ahead to verify

    Well Jason in that case I will have to take a new SIM from India and get international roaming activated as I dont want to ship my current SIM and if luck does not have its way I might land-up with a non-locked Iphone 4. Thanks a ton for your promt responses. I will surely update this thread with what I get to fianlly. Just to add a twist a friend recently showed Iphone 4 comparison with Nokia N900 and the N900 has good specs and for $ 350 unlocked brand new. Wish i had liked Nokia’a interface. Nokia keeps hanging – tried all in their express musix series. Android too keeps hiting on my choice list.

      Yeah another nice phone is the original nexus by google that phone is very nice and user friendly those come unlocked if you tell me what city your coming to in USA I can pre search craigslist for you and forward you the best deals to your email if you need help sorting through that

    Jason, now you got me all the more confused. I just checked Bestbuy that its avialable locked for $199.00. Unlocked seems to be in the same price range of Iphone.     Hi, I just unlocked my iphone 4 (baseband 01.59.00, Version 4.0.1) using ultrasnow 1.2. I followed the following steps:

    Here is the step by step guide on unlocking your iPhone 3G/3GS with JailbreakMe jailbroken iOS 4.0 and iOS 4.0.1.

    The first step is to Launch Cydia.
    Now go to Manage > Sources > Edit > Add and type the following URL “http://repo666.ultraSn0w.com”.
    After you have added the repo, type “UltraSn0w 0.93” in cydia search bar and tap search.
    Now tap on Ultrasn0w 0.93 and install the package.
    After the installation is finished, your iPhone 3G/3GS will be unlocked on jailbroken iOS 4.0.1/4.0.

    And then I installed the most recent ultrasnow 1.2 unlock.

    After installing and restarting, I go to connect the iphone to itunes and it keeps shutting down and can’t sync anymore. I can’t access my music,etc. in itunes anymore. How can this be fixed? Thanks.

      To add to my previous point: The iphone “rings”/”tweets” and the iphone logo on itunes just disappears and then reappears, but never is constant) thus not allowing me to sync with itunes to change music, etc.
