iOS 4 Confirmed to Be Unlockable

by Sebastien on Jun 20, 2010

In a tweet sent yesterday, Musclenerd confirmed that tomorrow’s iOS 4 will be unlockable. Even better than that is the fact that the iPhone 4 itself will most likely be unlockable too.

Those of you on an iPhone 3GS with baseband 05.12.01 will now be able to unlock as well.

The Dev Team has been keeping this exploit secret for a while and saved it for the major update that iOS 4 is.

My iPhone 4 Has Shipped. It Is Now In Hong Kong

by Sebastien on Jun 20, 2010

Yesterday I was telling you that my iPhone 4 was being prepared for shipment. Today me and many others received an email from Apple saying that our order had shipped.

It is currently in Hong Kong and is scheduled to be delivered by June 24th at 4.30 PM. I sure hope it will be there before 4.30 PM!

I remember last year my iPhone 3GS was scheduled to be delivered one day before the official date. However FedEx put it on hold and it came in the day it was supposed to.

Has your iPhone 4 been shipped yet?

iPhone & iPad News You Missed This Week

Here is the weekly wrapup of all the articles that were published on iDB this past few days:

Facebook for iPhone Gets An Update. You Can Now Watch Facebook Videos

by Sebastien on Jun 19, 2010

Facebook for iPhone has been updated to version 3.1.3. From the largest social networking in the world, you would expect more than this disappointing update that brings very few new features:

  • You can now watch Facebook videos.
  • You can now view and write on walls of events.
  • Uploaded photos are now 720px wide.

Facebook still hasn’t updated their application to be compatible with the iPad. It’s not a big deal to me as I usually go to Facebook directly from Safari to get the full experience.

Dev Team Releases RedSn0w 0.9.5b5-2

by Sebastien on Jun 19, 2010

The Dev Team just updated RedSn0w to version 0.9.5b5-2 which adds option for battery percentage and verbose boot mode. It also lets you individually select whether multitasking and homescreen wallpaper are enabled.

RedSn0w 0.9.5b5-2 is probably as close as we’ll get to the official release of this jailbreak tool.

The RedSn0w beta is still only for 4.0GM on iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G (non-MC version). You should not use the beta if you use yellowsn0w/ultrasn0w/blacksn0w!

by Sebastien on Jun 19, 2010

Woop woop! My iPhone 4 has been “prepared for shipment”. It’s probably somewhere in China right now being loaded in a UPS aircraft on its way to Kentucky.

Has your iPhone 4 been prepared for shipment yet?

Yesterday I showed you the banned iPhone promo video. Just as ridiculously funny and spot on is this banned iPad promo video.

Comments are always welcome.

iPhone 4 Camper Already in Line for the iDay

by Sebastien on Jun 18, 2010

I love my iPhone and I can’t wait for the new iPhone 4 to come out next week. I consider myself a total iPhone geek but there’s a limit to what I’d do for an iPhone.

This guy took it a step further by going from iPhone geek to super uber mega dork when he decided to set camp in front of Apple Store in Dallas no less than 7 days in advance.

I hope Captain iDork here is not waiting for the white iPhone because he might have a bad surprise on June 24th.

Awesome or awful? You tell me what you think.

iPhone 4 Has Twice the RAM of iPhone 3GS and iPad

by Sebastien on Jun 18, 2010

Historically Apple never revealed the amount of RAM you can find in the iPhone. It’s not really clear why they keep this a secret but one can think Apple wants you to focus more on the general user experience than on the technical specifications of the iPhone.

Some people do like to know about the technical aspects of their gadgets though. The iPhone 2G and 3G had 128MB, while the iPhone 3GS and iPad have 256MB. This partly explains why Apple doesn’t offer all of the features of iOS 4 to the iPhone 2G and 3G: they simply can’t take it!

During one of the WWDC sessions last week, Apple confirmed that the iPhone 4 has 512MB of RAM. That is twice the amount of RAM of the iPhone 3GS and the iPad.

As MacRumors notes, the added RAM should help overall performance and multi-tasking on the new iPhone 4. It could also explain why the iMovie App that Apple introduced at WWDC will only run on the iPhone 4. Apple has said iMovie will only run on the iPhone 4 and not the 3GS or even the iPad.

uTorrent Web Lets You Manage Your Torrents Downloads From Your iPhone

by Sebastien on Jun 18, 2010

Torrent managers will probably never make it to the App Store. We’ve already seen a few applications like Torrentula that lets download torrents directly to your iPhone, but to be honnest, that was not very useful.

After all, why would you want to download torrents to your iPhone? Downloading torrents on my PC from my iPhone seems much more interesting to me. That’s exactly what uTorrent Web offers with its new mobile interface.

After installing the desktop app and reading the few instructions, you will then be able to manage your torrent downloads directly from your iPhone by pointing Safari to http://web.utorrent.com.

Functionality is limited, but the essentials are there. You can paste in a torrent URI from another app on your iPhone to initiate a transfer remotely and pause active torrents. Concerned about your privacy? Have a read through BitTorrent’s post about architecting for user privacy.

No, this won’t allow you to download torrents directly onto your non-jailbroken iPhone — but it will at least allow you to start new transfers on your home machine (which probably has a boatload more free drive space anyway) from wherever in the world you currently happen to be.
