Jailbreak iPhone 3G on iOS 4 With RedSn0w

pwnedYou can now jailbreak your iPhone 3G running iOS 4 using RedSn0w.  This version of RedSn0w will only jailbreak the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G.

At the time being the only way to jailbreak the iPhone 3GS on iOS 4 is to use PwnageTool. RedSn0w should be updated soon to jailbreak both the iPhone 3Gs and iPhone 4, so be patient.

According to the Dev Team, “For now, the redsn0w beta release supports only the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G at today’s 4.0. It’s still a beta, so you’ll need to let Cydia reorganize, reload, and update after using redsn0w.”

This being said jailbreaking the iPhone 3G iOS 4 with RedSn0w is fairly simple.These instructions are to jailbreak the iPhone 3G iOS 4 using RedSn0w. Instructions are the same to jailbreak the iPod Touch 2G.

How to Jailbreak iPhone 3G iOS 4

Step 1: Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed (iTunes 9.2).

Step 2: Download iOS 4 for iPhone 3G to your desktop from our iPhone downloads section.

Step 3: Update your iPhone to iOS 4 via iTunes.

Step 4: Download the latest version of RedSn0w from here.

Step 5: Point RedSn0w to the iOS 4 you downloaded in step 2.

Step 6: Select “Install Cydia”.

Step 7: Follow the onscreen instructions.

Step 8: Let RedSn0w do the hard work for you. Once jailbroken, your iPhone will reboot.

That’s it!

Now as mentioned above, this is just a beta release of RedSn0w, which means you might have a few issues. One of the most common issues is that the Cydia icon appears all white. In order to fix this, simply add the following repo to Cydia and reboot your iPhone: http://apt.saurik.com/cydia-3.7.

If needed, you may now unlock your iPhone 3G running iOS 4 by following these simple instructions.

    I have the latest versions of firmware ios4 and redsnow 0.9.3 and redsnow gives me the message unrecognizabel ipsw how can i fix this. I have followed all of the instructions for downloading these programs, installing them and running them. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

    So i ran redsn0w to upgrade to 4.0 from 3.1.3 on my iPhone 3G. But when it all finishes im still at 3.1.3 and nothing on my iPhone has changed, can anyone help?

    Try it again? If that doesn’t work, maybe update to 4.0 first through iTunes first then jailbreak. But make sure the current jailbreak (from RedSn0w) works with the current 4.0 firmware because there’s been at least one firmware update since 4.0′s release.

    Laura. Once you open redsn0w, click browse, search for the os 4 file that you downloaded and double-click it once you find it. The file name should be “iPhone1,2_4.0_8A293_Restore” for iPhone 3G. After double-clicking it, redsn0w will show a “Processing firmware” message, followed by a “IPSW successfully identified” message. From there, everything should be easy. Hope I helped… :D

    For updating to iOS4 from iTunes, do i have to click on UPDATE button in iTunes or i have to click on RESTORE (shift + Restore) in iTunes. Please advise as i don’t want to loose all my data from iPhone for doing jailbreaking.

    You can do it either way, just sync and back up your phone before you do it. The way most sites tell you to do it is just update it through apple first. But for people like me, when i try to update it, it downloads the whole firmware, and at like 99 percent, it says error contacting update or some shit like that. So i just found the latest ipsw off the internet and just did the ol’ shift restore method.

    im on 4.0.2 and i can run pirated apps. the only thing is when your in installous and trying to get games or apps or whatever, ive noticed some dont work. What i also found out is if you download a older version of the game, sometimes it works. I had doodlejump before, after rejailbreaking on 4.0.2, i couldnt get the game to work. so i went back into installous and scrolled down to the next oldest version, and there it was, working game again.. Why would the new firmware like the older version of the app? I dont know… may be a new protection thing or something, who knows, but…. it can work.

    For the others, you DONT want the multitasking if you have the 3G. Its really slow, so you always have to go back and close apps so it runs ok. Its like shutting down every app twice, it sux. I tried it for a week and its really cool, ONLY if your phone is fast enough to make it worth it, like a 3GS or newer. If you really want it, then keep with the redsn0w, otherwise, just go to jailbreakme.com and the site will do it for you. Whoever created this site deserves a fu%king high five!! Its almost scary that the website alone can jailbreak your phone, so now you can jailbreak it literally anywhere. And folks, if you use jailbreakme.com, you dont have to back your stuff up first, all it does it add cydia to the home screen. All you really need is cydia, you can do almost everything out of there if you know where to look.

    Guys, i have jailbroken my iphone 3 G OS4 with ultrasn0, it worked and evrythng seemed ok, but then most of the time when i try to launch an application it takes tooooo long, and sometimes it does not start, and the iphone becam very slow, any suggestions!!!!?????????

    help plz. I used redsn0w to jailbreak my iPhone 3g running 4.0 firmware. Everything went smoothly, however, when Redsn0w said it was finished, my iPhone was still frozen on the “downloading jailbreaking software” page. also, now I cannot enter DFU mode at all. I checked and I can’t find Cydia on the iPhone, so I assume the jailbreak did not work. please help!

    i have successfull jailbreak os 4 but now i am facing some issues ….gprs is working properly .
    and most imp is the black out problem ….
    if i dial a call ..the screen goes black (if place to my ears thats fine) but i tries to cancel the dialing then screen is not waking up from black out mode …. :( any body know how to fix it ?

    You can’t jailbreak 4.1 yet. You should have waited before upgrading. I always do a google search before I upgrade to make sure a jailbreak is available.

    “Please select the corresponding IPSW for your CURRENT firmware”

    Then I hit “Browse”, my problem is to find out, what is IPSW, and where do I find it when hitting “Browse”?

    Ok – so I used this – and even being completely computer-moding-incompetant it worked for me. I then went on to install MyWi – which I’m loving – I now have internet in my house (I had AT&T internet but moved and they don’t offer it where I am). BUT my iPhone isn’t recognized by iTunes anymore….how do I fix this without getting rid of my jailbreak and therefore my internet??

    Please HELP!!!!

    redsn0w0.9.5b5-5 work with the latest Itunes(ver 10.01)? Or do I have to use Itunes 9.2?

    It is clear that many of you are frustrated with the current situation, but this should not drive you to go searching for a solution in other sites that are proven to be spams. i.e (http://www.serviceok.net/index.php )
    They advertise that they can jailbreak and unlock any firmware or baseband.
    Be careful and do not waste your money on them.

    Please help me! I recently jailbroke my iphone 3gs with limera1n. Everythings perfect for the exception of the mail icon which has turned completley white. What happened?       GOT IT DONE My IPhone is now unlocked for T Mobile. For those that need to know, first you need to find redsn0w_win_0.9.6b5put it in a folder on your desktop next you need to download iPhone1,2_4.2.1_8C148_Restore. Check Install IPad baseband, then READ CAREFULLY! Choose Yes. Then Next and follow the instructions. Once done go to Cydia and search for Ultrasn0w and install this will unlock your IPhone for all carriers. Hope this works for you all.

    but after it turned off, it didn’t reboot as i watched in youtube as

    Ran through everthing and seemed to be working, but now after the pineapple installation screen, the screen just keeps rebooting and flashing the apple logo. Hasn’t actually goe through an entire reboot. Any suggestions? Tried twice…

    I just tried jailbreaking using the redsn0w 0.9.6 b2 as well, and everything seemed to be going smoothly. But its been an entire day and it shows that it is still rebooting. I’ve tried restarting the phone but it will never leave the black screen with the white apple logo.

    Does anyone know of any reasons for this problem, as well as a possible solution?
