How to Save Your SHSH Blobs with AutoSHSH

By , May 1, 2010

With the upcoming release of the Spirit jailbreak, there are a few things you need to do in order to be on the safe side should something go wrong in the future. One of these things is to prepare your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad by saving the SHSH blobs.

In this tutorial, I will show you how to save your SHSH blobs on a Windows machine, using AutoSHSH. This guide was written for an iPad, but  the steps are identical for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Step 1: Open iTunes and plug your iDevice. Back it up. When done, close iTunes and unplug your device.

Step 2: Download AutoSHSH.

Step 3: Put your iDevice in recovery mode. To do so, turn it off, hold the home button while plugging your device to the USB cable. Keep holding the home button until you see a “connect to iTunes” logo. If iTunes launches, close it.

Step 4: Launch AutoSHSH. Make sure you are connected to the Internet and that you have Java Runtime installed. If not, download and install it. Also make sure your device is in recovery mode and connected to your computer.

Step 5: Click “grab my SHSH blobs automatically”. AutoSHSH will start to work its magic.

Step 6: AutoSHSH will finally ask you where you want to save the file on your computer. Select a convenient location (ie. desktop).

Step 7: Reboot your device.

Done! Your SHSH blobs are now saved locally and on Saurik’s server. In the event that something goes wrong, you are covered!

    So, you are pretty certain that saving my SHSH blobs for a 2ndgen itouch running 3.1.2fw is not necessary to do?

    I know how critical it is to do with our iphones…and it was quite easy to simply click the ‘make my life easier’ button in CYDIA do save SHSH/ECID on Sauriks server…..But, I never saw this option for 2ndgen itouch and always thought it was not necessary for a 2nd gen itouch…

    Then that blog post hit basically saying ‘better safe then sorry..get your BLOBS backed up for ITOUCH as well’….and that threw me off since I was always under the impression that this was not necessary for a 2nd gen itouch…..

    Did some research and some people are saying it is still very important to save these blobs for the ITOUCH, while others have said what you did..that it really wasnt important to do with the ITOUCH…..

    When 10 people are all asked the same question and 5 say yes and 5 say no, it sort of leaves ya scratching your head ;>)

    Why not save it anyway? It’s easy and fast.

  • Matt

    What do you do if you have a mac? What software works for that to do the same thing?

  • Steve

    Firmware Umbrella works just as well

  • Brian

    ((Iain said:

    Can you even still save SHSH/ECID for 2nd gen ITOUCH running 3.1.2?

    I didnt think 3.1.2 could be saved anymore.

    What would be the purpose of me doing this anyway?

    Pretty confusing as so many people are saying it is important to save these blobs for 2nd gen ITOUCH while others say it is a waste of time and not needed.

    I also note you said it was ‘easy and fast’……

    Boy, have I heard that before….but rarely does any of this stuff go ‘easy and fast’…..not saying this wont asI see many saying it was a breeze to do…..

    But with my luck, I would do it and end up sitting here for days wondering ‘WTF IS WRONG’ …..

    My biggest thing right now is trying to get clarification as to whether this is needed for a 2nd gen itouch JB’d on 3.1.2 and never upgraded to 3.1.3

    I mean half the people say it is very important to save these blobs while half the people say there is no need to for a 2nd gen itouch running 3.1.2…..

      if your ipod touch is mb model, then you dont need to, but if it is mc, you do
      check in settings>general>about and look for the model number on the ipod

  • Spazbite33

    just a quick question, is the iphone always released in the uk the same time as usa??? or is it after?????

  • thefallen

    @Pr0zess0r

    yes just save ur shsh blobs to avoid issues with iTunes IPhone upgrades in the future.

  • Richard

    I don’t know why people keep on asking what devices and firmwares SPIRIT works with. Isn’t it preety obvious? Well let me clear things out for you;

    – iPad (wifi and 3G models)
    – iPod Touch 2G and 3G
    – iPhone 3G(s) (3.1.2 and 3.1.3) Including MC models

    HOWEVER YOU SHOULD ALL BE AWARE THAT YOU IPHONE MUST BE ACTIVATED AS
    SPIRIT DOES NOT UNLOCK THEM.

    I have a 3GS running custom f/w 3.1.2 when i tried to run this software.Somehow the software is backing up my SHSH for 3.1.3 .

  • http://www.eldaria.net Eldaria

    @Garry.

    Do you use any 3.1.3 faking software?
    I noticed that even though I have not upgraded to 3.1.3 but use an app to trick Itunes to think I have(To get rid of annoying upgrade dialog), Cydia now tells me that it has a backup of my 3.1.3 file.

  • PeterG

    @Garry; Eldaria

    This is because Apple no longer signs 3.1.2 firmware. Even though you’re running 3.1.2 you can’t get SHSH blobs for this firmware anymore. So, if you didn’t backup your SHSH for 3.1.2 when Apple was still signing it you’re too late. You’ll only be able to restore to 3.1.3 in the future if you have to.

    I have a 3G 2nd gen iphone and Auto SHSH said my phone is unsupported and it isn’t necessary to backup my blobs. Is that true and, if so, why aren’t more people saying SHSH blobs only need to be done for 3rd gen iphone, 3rd gen. ipod touch and the new ipad. Also, why don’t the other versions have to back up SHSH blobs?

  • Toby

    When I try to save the SHSH blob it says “unsupported! this device does not require SHSH blobs.”

    What does that mean?

  • Shakeel

    Is there any option to save 3.1.2 SHSH blob with Auto SHSH. There are no option to save 3.1.2 Only 3.1.3 and 3.2
    SO SAD

  • Stephanie

    Got a 3g iphone on firmware 3.1.2. Can i save shsh blogs? Or it has to be on 3.1.3 firmware?

  • Gautham

    I just got an iTouch 2G MC model and have found out the hard way that backing up SHSH blobs is necessary if you want to jailbreak. I attempted to jail break from a wrong firmware version and had to do a restore which updated my firmware to 4.0 with no way of rolling back, which is required at this time in order to jailbreak. From now on I;ll be backing all of my SHSH blobs.

  • Mike

    I can’t find the SHSH blob thing on that ih8snow website. Anyone know where the Hell I can get it?

  • Karen

    I saved my shsh blobs for ios 3.1.3 to my computer and they were also sent to the cydia server & I was told it was successful. However now cydia has no blobs saved for me.

    Has this happened to anyone else?

    How do you recover your blobs from cydia if you saved them via AUTOshsh ?

    I saved my 4.2 blogs via the Cheka app and emailed it
    To myself. How do I retrieve them. When I open it up, it’s just a bunch of letters. I updated to 4.3 by mistake

  • Ray Turner

    I downloaded the AutoSHSH Faith file today to get the shsh files for my iPad2. Tne instructions within the file doesn’t indicate it’s for the ipad2. therefore, I backed out. Is there another newer file for the ipad2. little umbrella doesn’t work for me.
    Thank you

    This all very interesting, I’ve been learning a lot. I’ve learned I screwed up when I upgraded to 4.3.5 with that said I had considered Jailbreak before that update and saved the cube looking thing on my PC and it is 4.3.3_8J2_Restore done on 07/08/2011. If I have this can I stil downgrade and do an untethered Jailbreak and Unlock? I might add my phone is MB model.
