It seems that having an iPhone still running on OS 3.0 is getting more and more complicated. I’ve managed to avoid updating to the latest firmware for several reasons but it’s now catching up with me.

There are several applications I wanted to install from the App Store but it didn’t allow me to because it required at least firmware 3.1.

I haven’t updated since 3.0 because I didn’t want to lose my jailbreak/unlock. I realize that I could just use a custom cooked 3.1.2 firmware or even use BlackRa1n but I won’t for 3 reasons.

  1. I don’t want to use BlackRa1n. It reportedly sucks. Many were successful with it, but it seems even more people were having issues.
  2. I don’t want to use a cooked firmware right now because I am currently traveling around the world with a small netbook and I really don’t have the time for that.
  3. I believe iPhone OS 3.1.3 will be available in a month or so and I might just wait for the Dev Team to come up with a jailbreak/unlock for it and update at this time.

I tried installing FWchanger again to fake my firmware version but it doesn’t work very well, and it even messed up a few things on my iPhone. I guess I’ll have to live without these apps I wanted to install…

What firmware are you on?

I’m on 3.1.2. The moment I’m able to upgrade, I do. But I’m also a Mac user so I’m able to keep up with dev-team’s mac-only releases of their jailbreak tools.

I see no real reason for anybody to be on 3.0. The tools exist for a 3.1.2 jailbreak and unlock..

  • alan absalon

I have no problems with blackra1n.

  • GarethDPhillips

3.1.2 Jailbroken and unlocked using blackra1n. It works GREAT, You really should try it! Especially on a 3G. Its not as if you cant roll back anyhow

  • Jeffery

I’m on 3.1.2 I used black rain. It was a major pain in the ass but I got it to work with two days of working with it. I’m going to get a 3gs next Thursday so I hope it works out well for me then.

  • chtrich

Went to 3.1.2 via blackra1n about 2 weeks ago when an app I wanted required 3.1
Blackra1n was EASY and worked great. I have an 8 GB 3G using T-Mobile.

I was holding off as a Windows user that needed a unlock, but blackra1n seriously was fantastic. By far the easiest jailbreak and unlock yet!

    Take the plunge!

  • just update…
    there are no data to loose if you update through your iTunes database and don’t use downloaded “Backup files”. Nothing changes (;

  • I am using FW Version 3.1.2
I have jailbroken my ipod touch and at least 10 other iphones/ipod touches with blackra1n RC3 no prob. i dont whats with everyone else, but Ra1n works great.

  • @LappyGirl

I’m on 3.1.2 and have no issues. I did use Blacktain to J/B but I only J/B 3 weeks ago. It’ll be interesting to see what I decide to do with the next update. I don’t like to wait, but I am liking my J/B….hmm…

  • Variamus

I’m currently on 3.1 and never had any issue.. I won’t get 3.1.2 since I wouldn’t get the untethered jb..

  • Albion

If u want my advise. Forget abot dev team waiting bs. Use blackrain it works just great with no problems at all. Used blackrain on about 10 iPhones 3g&3gs frainds and family all perfect. But to be honest with you I really think u know this better than me and are just acting like this for the purpose of your benefits, to create interest for many visitors on this site, so the numbers will go upand so your wallet. Don’t get me wrong nothing against it. But try to be a little more serious sometimes 🙂

  • DKLA

@chtrich – How is your experience with T-Mobile? I heard that you can’t get 3G coverage with them, so are you just using Edge?

  • Bryan

Happily using 3.1.2. Did 3 separate Blackra1n installs. All worked without a hitch.

  • Spazz

I completely agree!! I’m running 3.0.1 and i’m afraid of change lol

  • There shouldn’t be a problem upgrading to 3.1.2 at all. Its an easy process as you should know, and a small netbook is more than sufficient. I’m not judging, up to you. But as for 3.1.3, who cares about it? its a point release, the main reasons for upgrading to 3.1 + were security issues surrounding the text message flaw for DOS attacks. Also, I have a strong suspicion that 4.0 will be released to developers (such as my self) on the Jan 27th date for testing as well as Tablet development.

Have you tried PkgBackup yet? I’ve been using it for months now and I love it! I’ve used it a couple times and it helped get me back up and running 100% within an hour of my jailbreak/restore. And I have about 70 Cydia apps installed. You can even backup your themes now too!

I used it going from 3.0.1 to 3.1
and again going from 3.1 to 3.1.2

    my 2¢

I have used Blackra1n on over 35 phones. These were then all used with tmobile. The only problem I had was with the wifi not working on 2 of the phones until I reset the networks. Very, very easy fix and unlock. I recently upgraded 5 3Gs running 3.0 and 4.26. I hated doing this without pwnd software but I don’t have a mac and didn’t want to wait for the pc version. Most of the people with these phones don’t care as much as you and I anyway. But I agree with Albion, you did a good job generating general interest and polling.

  • @Albion & Kyle – Oh no you guys. I completely admit that I sometimes write articles baiting for comments and reactions. The article I wrote last week about GeoHot not working on blackra1n was one of them for example (and it worked great). This article however wasn’t intended to create interest. To be honnest with you, I wrote this in about 10 minutes because I didn’t know what to write about. I really thought it was kinda boring but I was wrong, it got over 15 comments. That’s funny how sometimes I spend 2 hours writing something that I think is great and will really help people, but in the end, no one cares. On the other hand, I sometimes write quick and easy articles like this one that do get good feedback. I guess that’s the reality of blogging… At any rates, I do appreciate your comments. Getting feedback from readers (especially loyal readers) is always nice because it validates what I do. Keep it up!

@iPhone3GS I know about that yes.

@Everyone else – I really can live with 3.1.2 and as I said in the article, since I am traveling with limited internet and time, I don’t want to take any risk upgrading to 3.1.2 and jailbreaking/unlocking. I’d be miserable if I was stuck on a stock iPhone…

Thanks everyone for the comments 🙂

  • I think you should set your personal feelings aside for geohot because that is clearly your problem. Blackra1n works fine and it’s quick. I’ve used it on several phones, both 3g and 3gs and have had no issues. Also on my daughter’s itouch 2g. All running 3.1.2. Upgrade and take the plunge! Set your feelings for geohot aside.

  • Blimey

I’ve used B1ackra1n on two 3gs phones and it worked perfect both times. Second time I did have to first install iTunes on the computer laptop computer I was using for the jailbreak but that was the only issue. Takes just a few seconds to do it’s thing and you’re good to go. Couldn’t be happier with it and no problems since then.

  • bastihome

I’m on a 3G with OS 3.0 and want to upgrade. It’s already jailbroken and unlocked and I took a lot of time installing cydia apps and hacks. Any way to update without losing all that? Btw I’m on a mac. Thx for your help!

  • AJ

    Hey Sebastien,
You are the person that allowed me to have the confidence to try jailbreaking my precious. But after I updated to the new OS I used Blackra1n. It is WAY easier than any other jb program.

I realize you are hesitant to have the phone go back to stock but honestly what will take you the longest is downloading the new update.

bastihome: Install Rock and create a Rock ID

  • Aspexil

I upgraded 3G to 3.1.2 AFTER geohot came out with blackra1n & unlock. Worked first time. Never use v1.0 of any sw always wait a while and let pioneers work out bugs

  • Medley

I had to try a few different pc’s to get blackra1n to work on my phone. But it finally worked and all is well. Only thing is I had to manually reinstall all my apps because restoring w appbackup would cause my phone to not boot at all.
