There are hundreds of Twitter apps for iPhone in the App Store but after weeding out those with useless features, bad UI and the such, it basically comes down to a handful of applications that deserve our attention.

I’ve been asking people on Twitter what’s their favorite iPhone Twitter app and I’ve been keeping track of the results. I’ve also had a close look at these 2 polls to come up with what I think is the ultimate list of the best iPhone apps for Twitter.

Of course we all have our favorites (mine is Tweetie 2), but we have to agree that the following apps are “la creme de la creme” of Twitter clients on the iPhone. For each application, I will also highlight what YOU like about them, according to my survey on Twitter.

Tweetie 2

The big winner is of course Tweetie 2 [iTunes Link]. Rewritten from the ground up with a fast and powerful new core, Tweetie 2 offers the most polished mobile Twitter experience around. As I said above, Tweetie 2 is my favorite application for Twitter on the iPhone, and according to the results, it is also your favorite.

This is why you love Tweetie 2:

  • multiple accounts
  • the user interface is clean and elegant
  • it is fast
  • very functional and easy
  • it is stable
  • you can edit your Twitter profile right from the app
  • list integration

Check out the list of all Tweetie features. Tweetie 2 is available for download from the App Store for $2.99. Way worth your money!

I haven’t used Twitterrific [iTunes Link] in a long time and I remember I stopped using it because I thought the UI was too cluttered. Apparently, many of you like it because it ranks #2 on the list of the best iPhone Twitter clients.

You really like Twitterrific for:

  • its sexy UI
  • the ease of use
  • the view of conversation threads between users
  • the customizable visual themes & layout styles

Twitterric has many more features and it is available from the App Store for $2.99.

Echofon (formerly TwitterFon)

Echofon [iTunes Link] is probably my second favorite Twitter app for the iPhone, although it’s one of the most expensive. I just think it is very fast, easy and the UI is amazing.

Your favorite Echofon features are:

  • it is a very simple and functional application
  • it has a clean and tidy UI
  • it offers push notifications
  • easy upload of pictures to Flickr

Read this for more information about Echofon, or download it from the App Store for $4.99.

TweetDeck [iTunes Link] is the first free iPhone Twitter app to make it on the list. If you like the desktop version of TweetDeck, then you’ll love the iPhone app. It’s a good app, but if you’re a power user, you’ll need something a bit more “solid”.

TweetDeck is a favorite because:

  • it syncs with your existing TweetDeck columns
  • it is simple and fast
  • you can have groups
  • you can use columns to create multiple screens

TweetDeck has more features than that and it can be downloaded for free from the App Store.

Twittelator Pro

I have never used Twittelator Pro [iTunes Link] so I can’t really tell about it but you seem to like this iPhone app for Twitter has it shows up #5 on our list.

You like Twittelator Pro for:

  • the clean user interface
  • the thumbnail previews
  • the ability to customize the app (backgrounds, fonts, icons ,etc…)
  • the simple ease of use

Twittelator Pro doesn’t come for cheap as it is available from the App Store for $4.99.

Honorable Mentions

The following applications didn’t make it in the top 5 best Twitter clients for iPhone but it is worth noting they are in your favorites too.

  • qTweeter – a jailbreak app
  • TwitBird Pro
  • SimplyTweet
  • TwitBit
  • BirdFeed
  • Twitterena

  • dylan

tweetie 2 sounds really sweet. i dont hav a twitter yet but i think i’m-iz-a gonna get one lol

  • Yes! Get on Twitter now 🙂

  • Brit

I have Tweetie 2, Twitterrific Premium, Echofon Pro, TweetDeck for iPhone, Twittelator Pro. All because of my search for that best Twitter App. I have used all of these EXTENSIVELY!! as i am a Twitter Power user!

None come close to the ease of use, functionality, of Twittelator Pro, and the amount of updates this App gets with added new features is simply amazing!!

Because of its price tag many don’t buy it hence their lack of experience with it,,they simply go with the more hyped Twitter apps, but whilst Twittelator pro is the shy one that hides in the packs a punch! because of twittelator pro…i have’nt visited the Web version of twitter in a very long while because i can do it all within the App!!

This is coming from someone who has/used..still using Tweetie 2 side by side with Twittelator Pro.. Am very very familiar with all these major Twitter Apps for the iPhone!!

    What can i say..Am Twittaddicted!!!

  • Dylan

lol i shall now. kinda off toppick, but im on my pc and im using an app called air mouse cuz i just set up wifi in my house and this app rocks! my ipod is a mouse! so kewl!

  • I think Tweetie and Twitterific are hands down the best apps so far. If Tweetie had push notifications for mentions and Twitterific would stop making a paid version and just give out pro for free, they would be prefect!

  • Cayman (Attila)

I’ve tried many apps to use twitter and there is no better than Tweetie 1-2. Best in usability. Its fast and good looking. In design, my favorite is Twitterrific, but it is hard to use, bit complicated. Tweetie just needs a better design, than its the best.

  • Dylan

i gots a twitter now lol
    and tweetie 2. its kewl

  • twod2power

why is it i never hear anyone talk about qtweeter it allows you to send fast tweets with a slide of the finger. check it out (iphone) users.

  • Fuzzy Muffins

according to the iPhone app store, twitterific comes in free version and a ‘premium’ version for $4.99

  • Deman Risu

I really like Tweetie 2, it’s fast and cheap (which is something that you don’t see everyday in the world of Apps).

  • Ralph White

$4.99 *is* cheap for software, especially when you use it often! (I’m not a developer.) I own everything in the top 5 and Twittelator does the most: custom, Unicode, nearby search with maps, translation, other stuff.
But boy do I wish it worked like Twitterriffic. If (when?) Twitterriffic adds Twittelator’s features, I will be a happy Tweeter. End of line.

  • Richard

    So no Tweetings then?

  • Richard

Oops pressed post before I added reasons. Well Tweetings has push, lists, geolocation, nearby map, retweet, pulldown refresh, loads of themes, twitlonger integration

  • Theo

I use Birdfeed and I love it but I don’t see it on the list…. It’s simple to use but yet very elegant design and it does the job….

  • Hootsuite is my favorite. Does everything TweetDeck does, only better.

  • João Bispo

I used many of these apps, but I think Tweetings is the Best. It’s not very expensive, and hás more options than I can list here.

  • I use Tweetie2 & am v pleased with it. Just wish it had push notifications, I’ve had to pay for & waste a space for TweetReply to get Push.

  • Ian

I’ve only used the free ones like Echofon, Twitterrific, and TweetDeck. Out of those, Echofon is my favorite. If I were to try a paid one, I’d try Tweetie.

  • Tweetie 2 is JUNK!

I was using and swore by Tweetie 1 for quite awhile. I was pretty excited to upgrade, but it was a colossal mess.

First of all, it forgot every account you had set up in Tweetie 1 (no import of old data). Annoying, but not the end of the world, right? Wrong. It took me several attempts to finally save account data – I had to re-enter my main Twitter account login details about 6 times before it finally stuck – and I have a very cryptic password.

Once I finally got it working, it would remember mentions only occasionally, but would usually fall about 2 weeks behind (showing me my latest mentions as being two weeks ago, when there were dozens since); the particularly slow load and tedious process to load new mentions (you must scroll up, and it will only load after everything else is finished), is a serious usability flaw.

Tweetie 2 is garbage – SAVE YOUR MONEY!

Tweetdeck for iPhone is great, and free (the desktop version uses that awful Adobe Air platform).

I am also playing with HootSuite – they just came out with an iPhone version less than a week ago – and their web-based Twitter interface is hands-down the best Twitter client available.

  • If you don’t want to jailbreak your iPhone/iPod Touch, You can get “qStatus” from the App Store and it is basically the same thing as “qTwitter”.

  • dannyswrld

Twit Pro is the best. It stabs Tweetie / Tweetie 2 to death. Try it out 😉

  • Nice article!

I think the Twitter client landscape has really changed in 2010. New approaches and design strategies have yielded some remarkable new Twitter clients.

TvvitterBug 1.3 is currently in the approval process for release on the App Store this week. This release brings together the culmination of all the features, capabilities, and functionality most sought after in an iPhone/iPod Twitter App, including:

    1. All of the power you want, without the complexity you don’t.
    2. Five (TvvitterBug exclusive) user-customizable Tweet Views.
    3. Up to Five user accounts easily accessible from any view.
    4. Persistent Tweets between launchings so you can view your tweets anytime.
    5. Double-Tap Instant Update to easily and quickly refresh your tweet views on demand.
    6. Built-in Photo capabilities to add photos directly to your tweets.
    7. Built-in Translation support using any of the state-of-the-art web translation engines you choose, such as Google Translate, Yahoo Babelfish, or Promt Translator.
    8. Built-in Web Access to view tweet embedded pictures and other URLs.
    9. Editable User Profile, including setting a new Avatar picture.
    10. Support for both “Fixed” and “Editable” Retweets – you choose.
    11. Landscape support for both Views and Keyboard.
    12. Automatic Language detection and display – great when you’re surfing!
    13. The same ease-of-use and lightning fast operation as the original version.

I think your readers would be interested in learning more about TvvitterBug from your review.

    • Alma R.

Hi there, I have Twit Pro now that I have an iPhone w/Verizon. I have a dumb question. How the heck can I see Tweet replies from people I follow? I haven’t had my Twitter account on my cell phone since I haven’t had a “smart phone” till now. Is that possible? I want to expant my followers, etc., but I want to become very familiar with Twit Pro first. I’ve gone into blogs for help but so far not much is out there.
Any help you can provide would be appreciated.
