voicemailIt all started last week when I got a phone call from my dentist’s secretary. The first thing she asked was if I had listened to the voicemail she had left me the day before. I hadn’t seen any voicemail and I really thought she actually never left a voicemail in the first place. I didn’t think about it anymore until the next day, when I received her voicemail as well as a few others that were from the last 5 days.

Apparently my iPhone is not delivering voicemails on time anymore, which is not a big deal to me as I am not much of a phone person, but it can be extremely important to businesses, and it can even be vital for people. I looked around on Twitter and it seems that a few people are experiencing the problem too.

It’s not really clear where the problem is from as it appears on jailbroken and non jailbroken iPhones as well. Apparently it started after 3.0. I haven’t installed 3.1 yet so I don’t know if this has been fixed or not. I’m not even sure it’s a firmware problem. I’d rather think that the problem is from AT&T but I’m not positive about that.

There is a fix for this. Please read my article called how to fix iPhone’s visual voicemail delays.

As usual in these cases, one of the first things to do is to reset all settings and maybe even restore. I’m not going to go as far as restoring my iPhone but you may want to consider this option if you find the voicemail delays annoying.

Have you guys experienced such problem? If so, do you know where it might come from?

AT&T told me after an hour trying things it was a rare but common (really that’s what he told me) problem with iPhones and to take it back to apple for a new phone. Out of warrenty I said I don’t think so. I did a full restore ( not to a back up but to factory) and problem solved.

I have this same problem. Rebooting your phone after a missed call will make the voicemail show up.

  • Wayne

I have the same problem, my voicemail shows up days later. I called AT&T and they said they are aware of the issue, but have no estimated time that it will be fixed. It’s a network problem not a phone problem.

I have notice the same thing about the voicemails. The same thing happens with me and although I have never been the type of person that checks every voicemail it can sometimes get annoying when people are constantly asking you if you heard their voicemail. I like the fact that you can see the person’s name but at the same time the reminders are not as accurate as they should be. I thought I was the only one. I get confused with missed calls and voicemails. I see that others said rebooting it would work so I guess that should help.

I have not been able to receive the “visual voicemails” also. I called AT&T tonight and they were of ZERO help and said that someone from customer support would call me tomorrow. They aren’t too bright over there, so I plan on doing a full restore from iTunes. I’ll see where that goes.

I receive voicemails that are not intended for me. Even with full reception/signal I often get a voicemail pushed through, but the phone does not ring! The voicemails are from different people but never intended for me. Spoke to o2 in the UK and they insisted nothing was wrong and they reset some settings on their end!?!?! Anyone else came across this one?

Not only do I have this problem, but sometimes, after a voicemail finally shows up in the visual voicemail display and I press on it to access it, the phone will not be able to play it — just display the symbol for “working on it” indefinitely. I’ve never had a phone that I didn’t want to throw out the window sometimes but come on!

My husband and I are both having this problem with both of our phones: just today voicemail messages arrived in my voicemail box that had been left for me more than 24 hours ago. This problem is even more troubling for my physician husband, who is often “on call” and has received emergency phone messages two to three days after the nurse left the message for him. My phone is one of the original iPhones, but my husband has the latest version. We have tried upgrading their software, rebooting, and resetting our phones, but we are still having the problem. We are now having problems with connecting with our wireless internet connection, a problem that does not arise with our laptops. Does anyone have any suggestions for fixing these problems?
Needless to say, we are keeping our home land line.
We may have to ditch our phones or AT&T, neither of which we would like to do. We have been with AT&T ever since we first got our cellphones, I am not terribly keen on Verizon, and the iPhone is a wonderful device. Nevertheless, we need the phone more than the apps.

This issue started for me back in early July. I was out of the U.S. for 5 weeks until end of August and the problem was still there, so I called AT&T and they said that Apple was aware of the problem (which they know started in early July) but they didn’t have any time frame on when Apple would release a fix for it.

I, personally, hate voicemails, so this gave me a great excuse to change my VM greeting to tell people that I won’t get their voicemail and instead, they should txt or email me–no more voicemails 🙂

  • Hey guys, it seems that there is a solution for this problem. Please read this article for more info.

Well, my visual voicemail is still not functioning, but the good news is that AT&T claims that this fix works for about 95% of the people with this problem (guess I’m just special)…

There’s a profile by the name of BenM.at that needs to be deleted (removed).

    Remove BenM.at, Visual Voicemail issue

To view profiles tap Settings – General – Profiles – Remove, BenM.at or AT&T USA

Once in the Settings screen, tap General, tap Reset, and then tap Reset Network Settings.

If this still does not correct the issue, you should perform a Backup and Restore on the iPhone.

  • Susan

Okay, I’m back in business! If the above doesn’t work for you, try “Reset All Settings” instead of “Reset Network Settings.” If that doesn’t work, Backup and Restore on iTunes but as a “New” phone instead of your old one. That should do it. Apparently, when this new 3.1 update happened, it had a corrupt file in it (that BenM thing that they tried to remove first). Whew!

  • Sam

Thanks Susan- Removing Ben.M worked for me!

  • Martin

Thank you so much! The profile deletion worked like a charm and now I can check my zillions of voicemail!

  • Installing the profile found in the link here http://appadvice.com/appnn/2009/10/31-tethering-visual-voicemail-fixing-the-benm-mobileconfig-file/ will enable tethering and leave your visual voicemail working.
