As I predicted, Apple unveiled today iPhone OS 3.1, and you know what? There is not much to it! It seems to me all this event was actually kinda disappointing but that’s what happens when you expect too much…

If you’re a jailbreaker, do not update your iPhone to 3.1 as it will wipe out everything and worst of all, you may not be able to jailbreak or unlock in the future.

Apple also announced the release of iTunes 9 and it is nice to notice that it is safe to update iTunes to 9.0. It won’t affect jailbreakers or unlockers in any way.

Now if you used the tethering hack to tether your iPhone for free, you may not want to update your iPhone to 3.1 as we’ve seen mixed results. Some people report that the tethering hack is working fine after updating to 3.1. Some other report that it breaks the hack. Let’s wait and see.

Here is the list of features that come with iPhone OS 3.1:

  • Improved syncing for music, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and photos
  • iTunes U content organization
  • Redeem iTunes Gift Cards, codes, and certificates in the App Store
  • Display available iTunes account credits in the App Store and iTunes Store
  • Save video from Mail and MMS into Camera Roll
  • Option to Save as new clip when trimming a video on iPhone 3GS
  • Better iPhone 3G Wi-Fi performance when Bluetooth is turned on
  • Remotely lock iPhone with passcode via MobileMe
  • Use Voice COntrol on iPhone 3GS with Bluetooth headsets
  • Paste phone numbers into the keypad
  • Option to use Home button to turn on accessibility features on iPhone 3GS
  • Warn when visiting fraudulent websites in Safari (anti-phishing)
  • Improved Exchange calendar syncing and invitation handling
  • Fixes issue that cause some app icons to display incorrectly

As you can see, there is no word about battery improvement. I guess Apple didn’t deem consider this as an issue.

All the 3.1 firmwares as well as iTunes 9 are available from our downloads page.

Needless to say that there is no jailbreak yet for iPhone 3.1. I will keep you updated and write tutorials on how to jailbreak iPhone 3.1 as it becomes available.

If you have noticed anything new in 3.1, please feel free to report it by leaving a comment below.

  • Thanks for this update! I’ve already warned my iPhone jailbreaker family & friends!

  • Just wanted to let you know that you can redeem iTunes gift cards and codes in 3.0 already. Just go into the App Store on your iPhone, tap “Featured,” and scroll down to the bottom. “Redeem” is the last option, and will allow you to do just what it says.

By safe to update iTunes to 9.0, does that mean we can sync our iPhone with iTunes without any problems? I’ve had my jailbroken 3GS since it came out and have never had it synced to iTunes for fear of problems (just drag and drop music to the phone).

  • Really great update for iPhone. I am also working on iPhone Applications. Thanks for info

  • Sherwin

I’m running 3.0 (not even 3.0.1 since I’m waiting to jbreak 3.1) on my iPhone 3G and installed the new iTunes 9. You know how they have the virtual iPhone window to organize your apps on iTunes? Well, I don’t even see my virtual iPhone window show up. iTunes reads my iPhone and able to sync with it no problem but but the right side of the apps list where that window is supposed to be is just blank.

    Anybody have this issue?

  • Sherwin

Probably need 3.1 for that to work.

  • Very bummed to find out that my tethering stopped working after updating to 3.1. I would gladly go back to 3.0.1 if I knew how. Anyone know how to do this? I tried restoring it from an earlier backup and it didnt work. I use the tethering all the time so could use some help here.

  • Fonz

Just to let you know that iTunes 9 is not on your ‘downloads’ page :^(

  • Sebastien

@Fonz – thanks for letting me know. I just updated the downloads page and you can now get iTunes 9 from there 🙂

How do you know which OS version you have on the Iphone …. think it is already to late, I phone 2G was locked and I tried to unlock it with redsn0w …. my phone is not working … I propably installed OS 3.1 whithout knowing ;-((

  • Mark

At the moment I have version 3.01 jailbroken, should the need arise for me to restore my phone how do I restore it to 3.01 and not 3.1, will iTunes let me restore using a non-current firmware

the reason I ask is if something goes wrong with any of our jailbroken iPhones I can’t see a way of sorting it without upgrading, which could apparently make us unable to jailbreak ever again 🙁

  • Sebastien

@Mark – Download the 3.0.1 software from the downloads page. In iTunes, click hold SHIFT + restore. You will then be able to choose what firmware you want to restore to.

  • Mark

    Cheered for that Sebastien

On the apple software update is “iphone configuration utility” should this be downloaded or will it hurt jailbreaking? I have yet to upgrade to 3.1. Also I noticed on the details of 3.1 on the apple site it adds stereo bluetooth. Now my wife’s 3g already supports this so is it possible it will make it work on 2g or is there a hardware issue? I still have a 129$ pair of headphones I bought with the 2g and have only been able to use with ps3 so far. Running Windows 7 so can’t even use bt on the damn laptop. lol

  • Sebastien

Yes you can download the configuration utility. I personally never do it.

I believe the stereo BT is a hardware issue so I doubt you’ll be able to do that on your 2G.

“Configuration profiles are XML files that contain device security policies, VPN configuration information, Wi-Fi settings, APN settings,”

I followed those instructions on the activate mms app thread, but never could get the APN/Edge network to return to the 2g. Even on the safari site where you create a profile there is a spot to enable tethering. It never let me check the box. I had the proper at&t apn setting and all. Any ideas on this? I am going to upgrade soon, even though I’ve had the option for over a year. I actually loved my 2g. And I never knew till recently that my wife’s 3g supported stereo bt. Part of me wants to just pay the 99 for the 3g, but being the new craver I am, I am just going to shell out the 229 for the 3GS.

  • Sleeplessdwarf

Btw, that first quote is from the config download, so I wondered if I did download it, would it return my Edge settings. Somehow I doubt it, but never hurts to ask.

  • Paul S.

i have a jailbroken 3gs….do i need to down load the iphone configuration utility 2.1 to get the prompt for the mms update? Sorry if this is a nube question! I’m just trying to be extra careful not to lose my jailbreak but still get the MMS. Thank you

  • Sherwin

    @ Paul S.

To get the MMS update, your iPhone must be running 3.1 (jailbroken works). All you have to do is connect the iPhone to your iTunes and hit update. The carrier setting will be set on the phone. Then reboot. Extra MMS setting available if you go to iPhone Preferences > Messages.
