Once Again AT&T Is Screwing iPhone Users. Wants to Charge You $699 For the New iPhone 3GS

by Sebastien on Jun 8, 2009

AT&T is once again showing proof of how much it sucks. The new iPhone just came out with two basic features that we’ve been waiting for a long time: MMS and tethering. Unfortunately, AT&T sucks so much they were not able to get their shit together on time and we’ll have to wait to be able to use these features. How long do we have to wait? Well, we don’t know… As Jason Kincaid from TechCrunch says:

At launch on June 17th, MMS is going to be supported by 29 carriers, and tethering will be supported by 22 of them. So when can we finally expect these stateside? MMS is apparently coming “later this summer”. And tethering? A much more nebulous (and ominous) “later”.

This is ridiculous, plain and simple. AT&T has almost certainly known about Apple’s plans for many months if not years, and was probably involved in determining when these features would be launching in the first place.

Want to hear even more ridiculous? I tried to pre-order the new iPhone 3GS on Apple’s website and I can’t get it for under $599… Yes, the price tag says $299 but you have to qualify for it. Here is what the fine print says:

Requires new two-year AT&T wireless service contract, sold separately to qualified customers; credit check required; must be 18 or older. For non-qualified customers, including existing AT&T customers who want to upgrade from another phone or replace an iPhone 3G, the price with a new two-year agreement is $499 (8GB), $599 (16GB), or $699 (32GB).

This is far beyond scandalous. I switched to AT&T to get the first iPhone. I renewed a 2 year contract to get the iPhone 3G last year, and now, I have to pay full price – $699 – for the new iPhone 3GS. Are you serious? I hope this is a mistake and it will be fixed quickly.

Everything You Need to Know About the New iPhone 3GS

by Sebastien on Jun 8, 2009

I didn’t get to go to the WWDC this year again but I followed several liveblogging coverages as well as a live video streaming. Here is a summary of everything that was said about the new iPhone. Thanks Engadget for all the pictures. Please note that this text is really rough and I will take time to write a better sumary of what went on at the WWDC but I wanted to give you the heads up asap. Here is a live streaming of the WWDC. The keynotes will start at 10am PST.

The connection is not great and it goes on and off all the time so you have to be patient… When it goes off, it will say, simply refresh the page from time to time. The connection usually comes back within a minute or so.

Dev Team Says: Beware of the Fakes

by Sebastien on Jun 7, 2009

The Dev Team just posted some type of warning on their blog to alert you of phony websites pretending to help you jailbreak or unlock your iPhone. Besides messing up your iPhone, you might also be at risk of infecting your computer with viruses.

One very recent example is a certain yellowsn0w221 page on wordpress.com.  Do not download anything from that page if you’re on a PC, else you’ll be infected with a virus.  The page talks and talks about a supposed Firmware 2.2.1 yellowsn0w exploit, but it’s all a ruse to get you to download and infect your PC.

We’re used to (though still aren’t happy about) less predatory websites, like quickpwn.com.  That site (1) is not us. We don’t consult with them in any way (2) makes money from their Google hits (they’re usually near the top) (3) sometimes gives very very bad advice (like tweeting yellowsn0w users to use QuickPwn on 3.0 betas.  Bad suggestion).  (4)  also owns yellowsn0w.net, another money making website.

One way of avoiding any problem is to look out for sites and blogs that give “Dev Team-related” news that you don’t see on their blog or on iPhone Download Blog first. If you have any interest in this matter, I suggest you read the full post over at the Dev Team blog.

Apple Gets PWNed By Advertising

by Sebastien on Jun 6, 2009

This has to be one of the smartest/boldest ad placement ever! DoubleTwist, a software developed by DVD Jon that lets users access their iTunes library on any device, managed to get an ad right on the window next to the entrance of the Apple Store in San Francisco.

The ad invites passersby to try “The Cure for iPhone Envy”, which they can use to access their “iTunes Library on any device. In Seconds”. It’s clearly a message that Apple doesn’t want anything to do with. We’re hearing that Apple employees are currently scratching their heads as to how this appeared.

The window on which the ad is placed actually belongs to BART (San Francisco subway system) and DVD Jon managed to rent this space directly from BART. It’s totally legal and there is not much Apple can do against that. I bet the marketing department in Cupertino is not happy about that right now…

New iPhone Video to Be On Sale On Monday

by Sebastien on Jun 5, 2009

Among all the new iPhone rumors, this one has to be the craziest but also the loveliest one. Ok, sit down and imagine for a minute… What would be better for this Monday’s WWDC than having Steve Jobs himself coming back and unveil the new “iPhone Video” and actually announce it’s going to be on sale the very same day?

How does that sound? Believe it or not, that’s the rumor started by GearLive today and although I’m a little skeptical, I really hope these guys have good sources.

Talking to a few sources, it seems that the stars are in alignment for iPhone Video to launch this Monday. My understanding is that availability will be limited, because the plan was to launch in July. This means that Apple doesn’t have all the phones available now that they would have had in July for a launch – but you can expect regular replenishments of product.

I don’t know about you guys but at 10 am on Monday, I will be at my local Apple Store here in San Diego, following the WWDC from my iPhone and making sure I’m going to be one of the first to get my hands on the new iPhone if indeed it comes out that day…

Steve Jobs Ready to Return to Apple

by Sebastien on Jun 5, 2009

The word on the street is that Steve Jobs might be returning to Apple after taking a few months off for health reasons.

I guess the question on everyone’s lips now is: will Steve be at the WWDC next week to unveil the new iPhone? I say yes! Steve will be there.

Who’s with me?

New iPhone Name: iPhone V3 or iPhone Video?

by Sebastien on Jun 4, 2009

I wrote about possible names for the new iPhone yesterday and it seems we have more info coming up about that.

Carphone Warehouse added four placeholders (see image above) to their inventory list for new iPhone models earlier today:

  • iPhone 16GB V3 Black
  • iPhone 16GB V3 White
  • iPhone 32GB V3 Black
  • iPhone 32GB V3White

TUAW also has received an anonymous tip stating that AT&T’s support website will be updated with “iPhone Video” (see image below) as one of the model choices when choosing Apple as the phone manufacturer.

These are just inventory references and I still believe the new iPhone will simply called “iPhone”. I guess time will tell…
