Mobile Crunch Interview With Dev Team Member Pytey

By Sebastien Page on Dec 31, 2008

Mobile Crunch published a nice interview with Pytey, one of the preeminent Dev Team members. Interviews with Dev Team members are very rare and I suggest that you have a look at it if you’re remotely interested in jailbreaking and unlocking your iPhone. The interview obviously evolves a lot around the awaited Yellow Sn0w, supposed to be available today.

Here is my favorite part of the interview:

However, Apple places restrictions on what you can run on the device. They impose draconian restrictions on the type of application that you can run, they don’t allow applications to run in the background and they even restrict the applications by subject matter or if they compete with their own applications. If I buy a device I want to be able to do what I want with it, if that involves gambling or looking at an application that involves porn then so be it. The real estate agent who sold me my house doesn’t knock on my door every month to check what pictures I have hanging on the walls, so why should Apple have this right?

Earlier this month, I published a translation of another interview with Pytey.

Breaking News: iPhone 3G Unlock Will Work For All Basebands

By Sebastien Page on Dec 31, 2008

Earlier today, the Dev Team published a post on the blog with some strange binary codes that won’t mean anything to anyone that doesn’t speak geek fluently (I don’t!). I completely disregarded this post as I thought it was a pre-message for tonight’s release of yellow sn0w, the new unlocking tool that will be available sometimes today through Cydia.

However, a tweet from twitter user Yellow Sn0w got me all excited when it said that it will be safe to use yellow sn0w on any firmware. Tweeting back and forth with him, I was directed to a blog post of his that actually explains the full meaning of the binary codes posted by the Dev Team.

Here is his explanation:

In binary that message translates to vtaber 61060174. vtaber translates to “ignore” and the 61060174 means post# 61060174 on the iPhone DevTeam blog. http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/61060174/the-man-from-delmonte-he-say-yes

Hoping that this is true…

iPhone External Keyboard

By Sebastien Page on Dec 31, 2008

This is an interesting concept developed by Ralf Ackermann…

An external iphone / ipod touch keyboard – using a more “mainstream approach”. The keyboard (it’s a standard Freedom Universal Keyboard) uses the Bluetooth SPP (Serial Port) profile to talk with a Robotech Bluetooth module ( www.tigal.com/product.asp?pid=1124 ). This module is placed in a modified iphone battery sleeve and connected to the iphone serial port. The jailbroken iphone runs veency (a VNC server) and a tiny libvncclient based VNC client for keyboard event injection to whatever application you use.

All schematics and source code to appear on www.ubiqkom.org soon.

Apple Tablet Coming In 2009

By Sebastien Page on Dec 30, 2008

According to TechCrunch sources, Apple is expected to release a large screen iPod Touch device in the Fall of 2009. This larger iPod Touch will most likely have a 7 or 9 inch screen!

Apple has been experimenting internally with large form tablet devices for years, one source says, but there was concern that users wouldn’t like the device. The difference now is the iTunes app store, which has thousands of games and other applications that are perfect for a touch screen device with an accelerometer. Apple says more than 300 million applications have been downloaded since the App Store launched in July 2008. Combine the App Store, iTunes and a browser and you have one heck of a device.

There is no information about pricing so far but I personally don’t expect this new Apple tablet to be under $599.

Steve Jobs’ Health Is Declining Rapidly

By Sebastien Page on Dec 30, 2008

Gizmodo reported today that according to one of their insider sources, Steve Jobs‘ health is getting worse and worse, which is the reason behind Macworld and Jobs keynote cancellations.

According to Gizmodo’s source:

Steves health is rapidly declining. Apple is choosing to remove the hype factor strategically vs letting the hype destroy apple when the inevitable news comes later this spring.

This strategic loss will be less of a bang with investors. This is why Macworld is a no-go anymore. No more Steve means no more hype. Saying they are no longer needing [Macworld] is the cover designed by the worldwide “loyalty” department.

Apparently, this source has always been 100% right in the past, which leads us to think that it might be right again.

Gizmodo argues that Jobs’ health is nobody’s business but I completely disagree with that. Jobs’ health is pretty much everybody’s business, especially Apple‘s investors. However, I do agree with Jesus Diaz when he says that “we believe that there’s a line between saying “no-comment” and plainly misleading—once again—the public.”, talking about how Apple is lying to the public about Jobs’ health.

iPhone Nano Rumored To Be Announced At MacWorld

By Sebastien Page on Dec 29, 2008

So there are been lots of rumors lately about the launch of an iPhone Nano and these rumors appear to be more and more likely to be true…

According to iPhone Alley:

We just received word from a reliable source within Apple that they are in fact working on an iPhone Nano, and that it will be announced at Macworld. The source says that the iPhone Nano will most likely be similar in form-factor to the iPod touch, and will probably not include 3G.

What’s your take on it?

Wooden iPhone 3G

By Sebastien Page on Dec 29, 2008

Gizmodo posted today a really cool picture of an iPhone 3G wooden case. Clearly not your typical iPhone accessory but I find this wooden case very interesting. There is no info about pricing and where you can probably find out more from iCustom, assuming you speak Russian… who doesn’t?

Hacking The iPhone 3G… The Dev Team Way

By Sebastien Page on Dec 29, 2008

Dev Team members PlanetBeing, MuscleNerd, and Pytey were speaking last week at the 25c3 conference in Germany to present how they hacked the iPhone. It’s a very “geeky” video but it’s worth your time if that’s your cup of tea.

Some interesting facts is that at least 180 people with Apple corporate IPs update their phones using the Dev Team’s software on a regular basis. No doubt these guys at Apple are working on countering the jailbreak and unlock tools.

LBXshaver Is The Useless iPhone App Of The Day

By Sebastien Page on Dec 24, 2008

I was just browsing around the new apps section of the blog and came across the most useless and stupid application I have seen in a while. It’s called LBXshaver [iTunes Link] and it replicates a fake electric shaver.

Needless to say that this app has very limited purposes but it is very funny. I’ve been annoying my girlfriend with it for about an hour and I can’t seem to stop playing with it. Every 5 minutes, I come back to her saying “oh shit!”, as if I had forgotten to do something. Every single time, she falls for it and asks “what?”. “I forgot to shave”, and then I go on for a minute of fake shaving.

I don’t know if this brownie I just had is starting to kick in or if this app is really that funny… Give it a try and tell me what you think. It’s available in the AppStore for free!

Animoto Is My New Favorite iPhone App

By Sebastien Page on Dec 23, 2008

Maybe some of you already know Animoto, this website that let’s you upload images, music, and creates cool slideshows in a matter of minutes. Don’t misunderstand me, Animoto is not one of these cheap slideshow thing like Rock You or Slide.com. Using their patent-pending Artificial Intelligence developed to think like an actual editor & director, the resulting video has the emotional impact of a movie trailer and the visual energy of a music video.

Animoto [iTunes Link]  is now available in the AppStore, letting you create animated slideshows directly from your iPhone, and believe me, this app delivers!

You can start creating a new slideshow right after launching the app as no registration is required. Select 8 to 16 photos from your library, arrange them at your liking, select a song from Animoto’s library and tap “create”. It takes about 15 second to upload each image to Animoto’s servers. Once all the images are uploaded, Animoto will start creating the slideshow, which takes a few minutes. At this point, you can quit the app, make yourself a sandwich and come back a few minutes later.

The newly created video slideshow will be available for viewing. You can then edit it or share it with someone, which is the whole point of this app. It will send an email to whoever you want to share the slideshow with, with a link to your video on Animoto’s website. From there, you can do a bunch of things such as embedding it, uploading it to YouTube, etc…

I love this application but I do have a few feature requests… First, I would like to be able to login to my Animoto account so the videos are saved in my account. Right now, Animoto doesn’t allow you to login from your iPhone so you won’t be able to save these videos to your existing Animoto’s account if you already have one. My guess is that this will come in the next update.

My second request is that it should be able to let you upload a song from your iPhone. The website let’s you do it. You can just choose a song you have on your computer and upload it so you can use it in your slideshow. Now I believe that Apple won’t let anyone access the music library on the iPhone. Besides, uploading music directly from your iPhone would take forever.

At any rates, Animoto is clearly my favorite app of the week! I was already sold on the website, so it wasn’t too hard to make me an adept of the iPhone app… You can download Animoto from the AppStore for free here.

Here is a slideshow that I quickly made for demo purposes. If you have created your own slideshow, share it with us in the comments!
